July 2005
Two interesting cases on the back of the July Which? magazine today:
* BMW owner faced with warranty company's refusal to meet more than 20% of a claim for £5000 to repair extensive engine failure caused either by a failed water pump or a blown head gasket, or both; the refusal was based on blaming only the water pump and having no responsibility for other damage. Warranty company backed down only when Which? threatened to refer the case to the Financial Ombudsman Service.
* VW Passat owner suffered premature timing-belt tensioner failure in four-year-old car (failed at 64k, but was said to be good for 80k). Original suppliers of car tried to evade responsibility for supplying car of unsatisfactory quality. Threat of court proceedings by Which? eventually resulted in the supplier's insurance company meeting the cost -- £1885 -- in full, in spite of the supplier having changed its trading name and no longer being a VW franchisee.
Note the size of those bills. Read more
The pipe out of my silencer (ie the one that discharges gasses into the air) has a few holes in it.
Is this part of the exhaust MOT-testable as all the silencing and emisssions functions have already been performed?
Also is there anything to stop me from just cutting the rusty bit off? It would save mesing about with exhaust putty. Read more
I've got past many MOT's using Gun Gum and opened out oil tins with Jubillee clips
Will be checking out second hand Jazz this weekend. 03 plate (April) 1.4S model with 24,000 on the clock in silver type of colour for £6999. This is not a Honda dealer, but still a major one. Is this a good price? I reckon to start haggling from £6400 up, but not sure where to draw the line. Any thoughts? Read more

Hi,
Astra Club - R-reg
For some reason all of the switches below the heater fan controls (air recirculation, air con and heated rear window) have all suddenly stopped working as has the actual heating (i.e. turning the heater temperature control has no effect). The fan control still works fine.
Does anyone have any clues as to what could cause all of these to stop at the same time. I've checked fuses and there's no problem there.
Any suggestions welcome before I take it to a garage.

I did have a look behind the panel last night but couldn't find anything out of place. I've read elsewhere that other people have suffered the same failure but no-one has posted a solution yet. I've read a hint that it might be linked with an ignition switch problem but I'm not sure how to check this.
Got a small oil leak from the turbo on my 270CDI which is visable from where where it joins the plastic air intake housing.
My local dealership (who are really helpful) advise me that the gasket has gone. They are happy to replace it under warranty (which is good) but have said that it will only go again, 'whithin a couple of months',(which is bad).
It would appear that this is an on going problem and, once out of warranty, not worth shelling out for (3 hrs labour)on a regular basis.
I imagine that there are quite a few CDI's out there with leaky turbo's. Is it likely that a turbo could suffer a sudden failure if left with a small leak or, as the amount of oil lost is quite small, is this not a long term problem? Read more
If they've admitted it's going to be an ongoing problem and it arose within the warranty period surely it's up to them to fix it properly.

I also have a 2.4TD Weekend. Mine is slightly smokey on start up, but does not rev up at all.
Have you changed the glow plugs? They should have been changed by about 80,000 miles. Normally the glow plug warning light stays on for a few minutes as not all cylinders are at working temperature. This is a relatively easy, but fiddily, job to do yourself, but you do have to remove two components from the nearside back of the engine covering 2 of the glow plugs. A set of 5 cost me £45.65 from www.Spark-Plugs.co.uk.
It might also be useful to use an injector cleaner as a poor spray pattern could result in a bad burn in the chamber.
According to my manual the glow plug control unit is situated under the battery. It does require the removal of the battery and battery tray to get at it. If you do not have a manual then I would recommend you get a copy of Lindsay Porter's manual that covers Fiat's Brava, Bravo, Maria, Punto, Tipo and Cinquecento. They are regularly for sale on ebay for about £15.00.
Hi, just bought r32 replicas with 235/40/18 tyres to put on my tdi 130. Does anyone know what tyre pressures i should have.

I've seen 36 front, 33 rear mentioned on one of the Golf forums, but as Blue_Haddock says, it's probably best asking VW (assuming 18" wheels are an option that VW actually fit themselves).

I've only ever bought a car with cash, never borrowed - ever.
So, I walk into a dealers to buy a car for £20k list. Lets say I can get £1500 discount for cash.
Would I get more or less discount if I did a finance deal and at what point does a low finance deal become more cost effective that paying cash?

Thanks, just wondered what the 'truth' was! Now I have it!
Just remembered that I lied. In 1986 I bought a Fiat Uno on 0% finance for one year. Haven't bought a Fiat since!

There is a knocking/tapping noise seemingly coming from the top left hand side of the engine accompanied by a fair bit of grey smoke, thinking this was a broken valve spring or a sticky valve i took the head off for inspection and cleaned everything and reseated valves while i was there, put it back together and the noise/smoke was still there,i changed an injector but still no joy,i noticed that the top of pistons 1-3+4 seemed to be normal(dry and usual discolouration) but the top of 3 seemed to be wet as if the fuel had not burnt properly, there is engine management on the car but it does not show there is a problem and the car starts a treat and the turbo seems to be ok,do these symptoms signal a fault in the fuel system and would this cause the knocking i describe??
i had the car for about 2 weeks doing about 500 trouble free miles before the problem came about,it had not really been serviced properly by the last owner----any ideas would be most gratefully recieved as the missus is gettinga bit miffed at having to use her bike to do the weekly shop and has just got over having half a focus engine lying around the kitchen--i dont want to go any further like piston area til ive picked everyones brains----come on you diesel experts out there save me!!!!...thanks. Just reading some back numbers of HJ's auction reports and in the 29 June one ( tinyurl.com/c6jzl ) he says:
"Yesterday?s sale had quite a few interesting entries in the Bank of Scotland section, mostly repossessions carrying some degree of risk but consequently attracting low bids."
Having bought a few cars at auction, and intending to again in future , I'm interested to know what the risk is...? Read more
Fleet sales (depends how desirable it is - We all want
to buy that 140k mile X reg, white 406 1.8 base
model!)
So (and I realise you're being tonque in cheek about the 406) the only cars worth buying at auction are Fleet sales? And even then, I presume anything really good would have been creamed off.
Massive bills, esp. the BMW. 5K must be for a brand new engine fitted by bmw technicians.(or is that the going rate for a BMW engine these days)
Just goes to show that in cases like these the garage/warranty company etc know they are wrong, but will only cave in when the owner gets big organisations like which? on their side with threat of legal action.
I would bet that the owner of these cars would have had no joy at all fighing this on their own.
