They replaced my EGR valve during that 2yr added cover and well beyond the original warranty term. They also replaced a seatbelt mechanism a year after the warranty was up for free too and replaced and fixed the boot lock 3 times foc which has been a right pain in the backside and has now failed again for the fifth time. I can’t fault their willingness to pay for repairs outwith the warranty term but the cars are sadly not up to the standard set by the Japanese when it comes to reliability.

Hi,

I've been looking into buying a used sprinter. I know that the 95-06 models suffered badly from rust (or so the online reviews tell me?). Just wondering if the same is true of the 07 onwards models?... Read more

The rusty Sprinters got worse at 07 reg, not better, given the state of the ones In see on the road. I think it was about 2011 when they improved things.

By far the most rust resistant van I've come across is the Renault Traffic/ Vauxhall Vivaro. A friend of a friend runs a 51 reg one as a builders van, and despite being dented on all panels, there is very little rust....

Is 20,000 miles a feasible lifespan to change brake pads? Thanks, Read more

Over my 48 years of motoring I have in truth changed very few sets of brake pads......The most pad hungry cars dad had were a Renault 12 (14,000 miles) and a Talbot Horizon (about 12,000) miles but in fairness the pads were so soft they never marked the discs.

Same here. I'm lucky to get 12,000 miles out of the TR7's 50p sized front pads, but at least the original discs don't seem to wear. Virtually no lipping at 70,000 miles. ...

After a few days of ownership i noticed i was getting noise from nearside front suspension, the noise sounds a little like a broken spring.its only seems too do it when going over speed bumps or if there's a difference in road height and its more likely to do it if i,m braking.

i took it too my local main dealer as the garage i bought it from is 70 miles away and it was checked and road tested and they reproduced the noise i asked them to leave it at that as i would be contacting the seller ,there recommendation was that it needs further investigation but there is nothing wrong visually and its safe to use but its not normal.... You are not entitled to a car in perfect condition. If the car works and no identifiable fault is present, you will have to put up with the noise or pay for any work yourself.

My alternator went yesterday after my battery warning and stop light had come on. ABS and power steering went just before I managed to get it in to a tyre/battery garage to have a battery test. They then diagnosed it as an alternator issue and helpfully drove me to the nearest garage who do actual car repairs.

That garage have phoned me today with a price of £370 to £408 depending on which exact part is needed. This includes VAT and labour. ... Read more

I physically couldn't move the car to another garage if I tried as it was completely dead the other day.

I realise you wouldn't want the hassle, but that's probably not strictly true if you had a battery charger. My alternator has been in broken pieces on my bedroom floor for about a month, but I am still doing short local trips....

As the title suggests next year I will be looking to replace my diesel volvo v40. I do 16k miles per year and will be looking for a used hatchback up to 2 years old. I am unsure if to look at a reputable diesel engine in the honda civic for example or look at small turbo petrol engines in the focus or golf for example. The alternative would be the larger naturally aspirated engine of the mazda 3. I am concerned about the rising cost of diesel but don't travel into a city to worry about congestion charges Read more

Can you define steam for me then if its not water vapour?

Although at face value 'water vapour' is the same as 'steam', in fact it is tiny droplets like fog or mist, which is the same thing. Cloud, in other words. 'Steam' is only molecules of gas, which have not condensed enough to become visible.
