My alternator went yesterday after my battery warning and stop light had come on. ABS and power steering went just before I managed to get it in to a tyre/battery garage to have a battery test. They then diagnosed it as an alternator issue and helpfully drove me to the nearest garage who do actual car repairs.

That garage have phoned me today with a price of £370 to £408 depending on which exact part is needed. This includes VAT and labour.

I just thought this sounded a bit steep for just an alternator replacement, but wanted to see what other people have paid or experienced in regards to this.

I heard recently of an alternator costing £300 for a Porsche, but it sounds a bit steep for a Clio, even including fitting, which shouldn't take very long. Maybe, being a 'modern' car, a lot of electronic fiddling is needed?

I got a second-hand, but unused, alternator recently for my non-modern car for £30 and fitted it myself.

I would have thought around £300 job done , would be my target price.
Renault Clio Dynamique (2010 plate) - Alternator cost - Tilly Haines

I've had several people tell me that it seems rather pricey and should be around the £300 mark... Unfortunately, my usual garage was fully booked and my car was completely out of power so my options were limited! I can't really tell them that they are ripping me off... and I need the car ready for Saturday morning.

Nightmare!

Don't they KNOW?

Oh wait, Renault Clio. Nobody knows.

I had a Renault 5 Campus and the Edinburgh Renault Main dealer, given all details including VIN number, could never tell me which of a wide range of, for example, brake parts, it took.

Renault Clio Dynamique (2010 plate) - Alternator cost - Tilly Haines

I find the same! I'm always told it could be 1 of say 3 options... I didn't think finding parts for Renault would be so challenging!

Renault Clio Dynamique (2010 plate) - Alternator cost - edlithgow

Bit different to my Lada, which took....Lada brakes. They didn't even ask which model.

Maybe its a consumer capitalism thing.

Or just a French thing.

Renault Clio Dynamique (2010 plate) - Alternator cost - gordonbennet

A French thing is about right, whenever you work on French cars, particularly the brakes, it's always best to take the old parts with you as a pattern, instantly making yourself very popular the bloke behind the counter for making his job slightly less than impossible.

Most Japanese cars will have two possible front brake pads, easily distinguished, the rears are pretty well universal to a model and rarely change when the model does, Mercs can have a couple of sets for both front and rear, French can have anything up to four possibles for each end.

A tip for you home mechanics, when you first get your car and strip the brakes for cleaning/lubing, make a stencil of the pads both the friction material and the backing plate on a sheet of paper or card and slot those sheets into the service file, that will save you much time annoyance and money in the future when you can buy parts when on offer and be certain they are the right ones...same with air/oil/pollen filters, when you check or change them make a note of the part numbers for the future.

Some sites offer diagrams and dimensions of brake pads so with your stencil at hand online buying is effortless.

As for the alternator query, can these modern alternators be rebuilt any more, either by the competent home mechanic or by an electrical shop (assuming you have a few days grace whilst it's fixed), i ask because its ages since i had to replace or even a fit a new brush pack to an alternator so wondering what the score is currently (hoho), our cars are Japanese, Landcruiser/Forester.

I'm convinced French cars are made up of spare parts.

I physically couldn't move the car to another garage if I tried as it was completely dead the other day. I told them to go ahead with the repairs and am collecting it today, but I am tempted to confront them about the seemingly high price and ask for proof of the part cost. Although I'm not sure it would do much!

I realise you wouldn't want the hassle, but that's probably not strictly true if you had a battery charger. My alternator has been in broken pieces on my bedroom floor for about a month, but I am still doing short local trips.

I suppose a newer car will have higher electrical demand, but provided the computer has no overriding objection, you could still be OK in daylight.

Old thread but same story:- £418 complete job! Apparently whole front of car has to come off ¬bumper & wing +many components . Someone took 6 hrs (~£240+) which makes the new part~£180.. Believable if from main dealer ie /OE. Ridiculous. Avoid French/cheap? or choose carefully. (2006 1.5td mk3, & it is rusting out too behind the plastic)

Just seen the bill: £150 labour ~4hrs? £200 parts(~just alternator?) £68 vat - forgot that bit.

IN the Galaxy thread down below the OP says

"a new bosch alternator is £800 ish so that is not a option and secondhand ones rarely come up on ebay."

which is barely credible, but might cheer you up a bit.

Must be a 21st-century-car thing. As I said above, alternator change on a Pug 205 is a DiY doddle - if that is all that is required

Recon alternator for Landcruiser cost me £126 all incl, failed last year, took me about 2 hours total DIY.

I don't get the prices being quoted for some of these jobs, for anyone with an alternator or similar problem avoid the main dealer like the plague and call on the services of a local auto electrician, preferably the place taxi drivers and such take their cars.

Sometimes they can rebuild your present unit, sometimes, like mine, the body of the alt was past its best at 14 years so recon it was.

I would go down this route.

I would think £150 labour equates to 3 hours except maybe at a very cheap place.

I think it's because of the latest vehicle assembly process. Front End Module which Front Bumper, Light, Radiator etc pre-assembled in ONE piece then screwed into the body. An Engine, Gearbox, Front Suspension and Exhaust systems are again pre-built and screwed into the body. If any of part go wrong or needed to change, you need to take everything off in order to access and do the job.

Just got a Haynes manual for the 207. Idly flipping through it I found in the Engine section a warning to the effect that every corner of the compartment is occupied by something, so before contemplating any work make doubly sure that you have the right tools and know what you are doing. Not like the 205, or the 306 either - tho a 205 Dturbo didn't leave much space for manoeuvre.
