Anyone any idea what this is for? Read more

Hi Im Having the same problems as you with my car, did you manage to get to the bottom of your problem ? Cheers Steve

Is this something you can do yourself or does the tyre need to be removed? How much would they be?
The reason i ask is one of my rear tyres has a very short valve so short that i have to remove wheel cover to fill up.
Cheers for your help.

hope sombody may be able to help as its coming up to xmas and i have no vehicle! i stupidly ran out of fuel in my 95 2.5d transit,it now has diesel in it but just turns and wont start,i thought there was some kind of manual pump to prime the injectors but i cant see it anywhere?? Read more

There isn't a manual primer on the 2.5 DI engine. Take the fuel filter off and fill with fuel. Replace. Loosen the injector pipes and spin the engine over until fuel leaks from at least a couple of them. Tighten. Engine should fire.
If the filter is the old type (secured by a plastic wing nut) make sure that the nut is undone fully. It's easy to remove the filter with a partly undone nut, but it won't seal again unless the metal clamping ring is fully open. The later bayonet type of fitting (large plastic ring) might be a bit tight unless it was greased on last reassembly. Judicious force required. At risk of offending the perfectionists, a long screwdriver and hammer usually works.

When I viewed my car before I bought it, I was not in the least surprised to find that all four brake discs were very rusty, given that the car was 16 months old but had only done 4000 miles. But it was a good price, and I accepted that I might have to have new discs fitted at some point. The question now is ~ after what mileage should I hope for the discs to be substantially rust-free? My motoring is mostly on winding rural roads, with some hills, and requires an above average number of brake applications. I have now done 800 miles in under 4 weeks and I expected the discs to be largely OK ~ but they?re not. What is most apparent is that they are not cleaning up evenly ~ the worst of the discs is still noticeably rusty on the innermost (i.e. nearest to the centre) 50% of the face while the outermost (i.e. nearest to the outside diameter) 50% is virtually rust-free. Is this sort of thing normal, and can I expect the discs to eventually clean up completely. Or should I start saving up now for some new discs? I don?t notice anything substandard about the degree of braking available, although I have not tried an emergency stop.

(I realise that my questions may be seen as being similar to asking ?How long is a piece of string??!)

As well as checking for free movement in the calipers and pins, it may be worth chipping off any rust growths around the rim of the disks, which could contact the pads.

I just wondered. On the control panel of my Passat there is an 'Econ' mode whci overides the 'Auto' mode.

All that happens when I engage it is that the front screen steams up! Read more

Does the 'econ on' button stay latched on when the ignition is switched off and then on in VW/Audi models, particularly the new Golf series or does one have to engage 'econ on' to disable compressor, each time engine is started, prior to driving off?

Just finished watching Watchdog. It seems there is plenty to complain about the Peugeot 206 both over 3 years old and new. A number of viewers have written in about their car stalling.

Peugeot, to give them their due are investigating the problem and some owners report having sucessfully had the faults fixed under warranty.

I felt it was worth posting this in case anyone here is experiencing problems.

Your comments are exactly the advice that someone independent to the VM should say on programmes such as Watchdog. They'd never do it as it would spoil a media hysterical knee-jerk reaction story. Those owners saying that they had brake and steering failure were just showing their driving ignorance. But for that they get media acclaim.

I notice from all the threads so far there has not been one 206 owner concurring the owners experiences as described on Watchdog.

This quantifies the so called terrible problem amongst the 500,000 206's sold in the UK.

Hello

I've just bought a 2nd hand S80 2.9 with 63,000 on the clock. Doesn't look like the timing belt has been changed as its not mentioned on the service history and the engine looks remarkably untouched around that area (though its admittedly hard to tell for someone as mechanically clueless as me).
Does anyone know at what mileage I should have the belt changed?
Apparently the car should require another service at 66,000.
Should I get it done then?

Regards

I use not only manfrs timing marks but I also use tippex on the pulleys
before taking the old belt off sort of belt and braces approach.

I do this too, and it works well. According to the Haynes book for my S60, the factory timing marks on the 5cyl Volvo engines are incredibly faint and difficult to see, so this is especially relevant here.

My 1999 406 HDI 90 is suffering poor fuel economy. I am on 101,000 miles.

When the car was new I remember getting 55mpg from a tank on occasions. For the last year I've been getting 45mpg combined.

On my last few tanks of fuel I'm getting 39mpg and on this most recent tank I have got 37mpg. The thing that has really flagged this up wtih me is that I'm off work and so the only driving I have been doing over xmas is motorway driving at 50-60mph to and from relatives, also the air con is off (and it would normally be on but its gone noisey so i have stopped using it)

At 50-60mph with the aircon off I would expect 55mpg

Any suggestions on whats a likely cause?

My local mechanic is great, but he's one that likes to keep costs as low as possible (which is great in one way) but he doesn't tend to like checking or replacing anything that isn't actually *broken*, or that I specifically instruct him to do

Any help greatly apreciated

Thanks

Luke

PS thanks for all the useful info I have picked up on here. My car ticks up to 3000rpm so thanks to this forum I now know I *must* replace my timing belt pulley on my next visit to the mechanic.

I also know how to fix the stupid "brake fluid low" warning too Read more

Yes it was generating a lot of heat but as the brake was releasing after a few miles it wasn't overly hot, I expect if I had checked it before it released it would have been, but strangly enough couldn't smell anything. You could certainly feel that the wheel was hot when you stopped.

Hi

I'm looking to relpace my Clio (4yr old).. had my fill of Renault.. esp petrol versions.. lost count of the coil packs I have had replaced.

I really like the VW Passat but it is too expensive. even S/Hand, for me. looking at the Octavia 1.9TDi 5Dr.. I know VW make it... but is the build similar?

Any advice or user opinion gratefully received. Read more

mare

Sorry, but going back to the initial messages ... whats

this about VAG coil packs being suspect???

Shouldn't affect you, the coil pack problems are on the 1.8 PETROL engines, more specifically the 1.8 20V turbo according to the Golf Mk IV entry in the Car by Car breakdown.

Hi,
A friend has a 2000 x 3 series. He says he thinks the immobiliser has been triggered. He gets the dash lights up - but engine won't crank over.

He had left the car in his drive to get something from the house - not shutting the drivers door properly. He decided to lock the car - plipped the remote. Half an hour later came out to the car - noticed the door hadn't been shut properly, when trying to start the car - he gets this problem.

Has tried arming/disarming the alarm, plip - but to no avail.
He has looked in the mnaual - no instructions of how to reset immoboliser.

His brother had a similar thing happen to him - where the main dealer reset it for him, by pressing a button, but can't remember how this was done.

Any ideas? Read more
