Can anyone help ??
I have just bought a used Vectra with a VDO CDR500 CD player.
Foolishly, I neglected to check it worked before handing over the cash and now I find that the message "PANEL" comes up on the display when the unit is switched on and afer a few seconds the unit switches itself off.
I have another vauxhall with the same unit and have established that the removeable front panel on the radio is actually coded to the radio unit itself. All this means that my CDR500 was supplied with the front panel from another unit !!.
Can anyone tell me if this system can be re-coded to recognise this diferent panel ?
Kind regards,

The drivers side door lock on my 96 fiesta has developed an annoying problem. It'll lock, but won't unlock. My 95 Mondeo had exactly the same problem not long back so I'm thinking this must be quite common with Ford door locks. My red key doesn't work either. I've tried squirting a bit of WD40 in but no luck. Any ideas or is it a replacement job ?

i had exactly the same problem and it was a broken spring in the lock mechanism. New lock mechanism problem solved. Now however the passenger door has to decided to lock itself shut. When i try to open the outside handle it sticks up, the barrel wont turn to the locking position but will to the open position but still doesnt work, the inside handle doesnt do sod all, ive tried pulling on the cable and i cant get my hand in to manipulate the the levers. how can i open it? what else can i try?
Has anybody any experiance with the later 3.0td DOHC engine? is it as reliable as the old 3.1td which it replaced? Read more
Sorry for bringing up such an old tread. I work for Isuzu as a mechanic so i said for future reference here is the problems associated with the 3.0 DOHC Turbo engine. 1. Injectors. Usually the electronics in them fail and cause a miss fire. 2. Injector Sleeves. Causing diesel to leak into the sump and in severe cases the oil/diesel mixture filling up to such an extent that the vehicle actually runs on its own, on the mixture. This can cause the engine to rev to the maximum until all the oil/diesel mixture is burned or the engine basically destroys itself. 3. Rail Pressure Sensor. If the E.C.U cant determine what pressure is at the rail the vehicle may not start or stop running . A fairly simple fix with only the rocker cover needing to come off. 4. Rail Pressure Control Valve. This controls the pressure supplied to the rail. Engine will not start if this control valve is faulty. 5. Turbocharger. A very unreliable unit. Seals usually go after 50000miles. 6. Dual Mass Flywheel. Seldom give trouble but I have seen a few that have. If the new flywheel is taken off and not put back in the same way as the old one (lined up via a half moon shaped mark) the engine will not start as the flywheel sensor will be unable to determine the position of the flywheel. 7. Throttle Position Sensor. Fairly troublesome. Usually no deteriation in driveability but will bring on the engine light. The engine is a gem when running correctly but unfortunately its a rare occurrence. I think the 02 onwards models had a lot of modifications done to them such as improved injectors etc.
Hi I reckon you may have answered the problem I'm

Are stick-on number plates, as occasionally seen on 'sports cars', legal? Read more
I think E-types were originally sold with stick-on front plates, which is probably why they are allowed. What you do now if you need to replace an E-type plate, I wouldn't know.
Have just traded in ultra-reliable Passat Est 2.0GL at 232,000. Original cambelt, but tension pulley changed about 150,000 as whining and about to seize. Belt was ok.
Wanted something bit smaller, passat getting a bit tired.
How long can I expect 'bit thicker for these engines' Ford cambelt to last? It is auto, driven gently. Is it an 'interference' engine? It's done a mere 29,000. Any reason why it shouldn't do another 200,000 without probs? Is there any info re longevity for these engines? Read more
Here's a fourteenth year update for general amusement.
What i can't understand is how some makers manage to make a belt change into such a mammoth operation, usually well beyond the average owner and at scandalous cost....
anyone try this?? i run a very clean mk2 golf ,and id like to keep it that way..i feel waxoil has limited suceess where a little rust has started in hidden seams etc
seeing as diesel /oil mixture is very thin i recone it would seep into seems and hold back the rust
im only thinking of using it in the sills and inner arches etc.
any comments ??? i do plan to use it over some newspapers before i get told off for that Read more
Ankor Wax from Morris Lubricants is good stuff. The farmers use it on Combines and so on. Only £13 for 5litres from a factors.
A few years back I also used Shell 'Ensiss Oil' - that was good stuff, very thin and sticky. Comma 'Wax n Seal' also seems to do the trick.
Not a fan of Waxoyl (it doesn't penetrate, its far too think), and Dinitrol is too expensive.
Hi there,
I am about to change the spark plugs on my 1.25 zetec fiesta.
The Haynes book is saying that the gap should be 1.0mm, but this is for a champion plug, i have original fit motorcraft plugs from a ford dealer, does anyone know the correct gap for these plugs, they are AYFS 22C. I think they may be 1.3mm, can anyone confirm this please ?.

My Diesel Scenic is coming up for 27000 miles. The handbook advises that the car has 18000 mile services but there is a free intermediate check at 27000 miles and there is space in the service book for this to be stamped.
Renault dealer advises me that although this is still in the handbooks, they have advised that any cars after 2000 no longer need this check.
Can anyone verify if this is true? I know its basically just a safety check of oil levels etc but as the car is still under warranty I wouldn't Renault to have an excuse if I came to claim at any point. Read more
But would you feel right leaving the same oil and filter in for 18000 miles? Seems a hell of a long way to me - even if these modern oils are good, are they that good?
Afternoon all
As with all the cars I've owned, I like to keep a litre or two of spare engine oil lying around, in case a top-up is needed. Haven't yet had a car that didn't need this in its first 5,000 miles or so and never usually have any trouble figuring out what sort I need.
Bit stumped with the Civic, though.
Owner's manual is absolutely no help at all - says you can put any one of about 8 different grades in it, but doesn't mention whether it should be mineral, semi-synth or fully synth.
Rang the dealer - they told me to use Castrol 10W40 fully synth. No, they can't sell me a tin of it, they keep a big ol' drum of it out the back and decant it off as needed.
Checked Castrol's site to see where this thing might be stocked - no such oil (unless it's Magnatec, with which I have had a bad experience in the past).
Can someone please enlighten me? All advice gratefully received... Read more
I agree competely with earlier changes, if running under adverse conditions, as Honda advises. But not as a matter of course.
I have a 1999 T reg Focus 1.8 zetec ghia and occasionally the speedo stops the dial stops and also the mileometer
It seems random and can last for 5 secs to about 1 minute then seems to work fine again.
It happens at any speed and any gear and engine revs
any ideas would be helpful
Thanks

Speedo dropping and then recovering are definitely vss failure symptoms that I experienced. Power loss was a bit more random for me though and not necessarily when approaching junctions.
For the amount of hassle I experienced getting the old vss out, I'd pay a garage £77 to do it if it ever failed again !
Search this forum for 'vss' and you'll find one of my posts describing my experiences when I changed mine.
Since changing the vss, I haven't had any of the speedo dropping to zero/power loss problems reoccuring.
Can anyone help????
