Are stick-on number plates, as occasionally seen on 'sports cars', legal?

Was on DVLA website the other day and saw this:

www.dvla.gov.uk/faq/faq_number_plates.htm#26

from which the answer would appear to be No. Quite surprised me.

Providing the registration plate on

Veh first used after 1.1.2001 complies with BS AU145D and of prescribed font under RV (Display of Reg Marks) Regs 2001

1.1.73 - 1.1.2002 - BS AU 145A
Pre 1.1.73 - BS AU 145

Cannot find anything under the Regs to prohibit so it appears a stick on font is OK. At the end of the day they are these encased.

Do you mean they stick straight on to the bodywork, so that the car colour forms the background to the numbers? Or ones where you firstly stick on a rectangular luminous white/orange strip, then stick the numbers on to that?
Halfords sell the latter - I just stuck one on my caravan.

With the former, it must depend apart from any legal considerations on whether the numbers and bodywork are of sufficiently contrasting colours. Black numbers on a white car would work, but obviously white on white or black on black would clearly be silly.

"Halfords sell the latter - I just stuck one on my caravan"

Do they check your V5? I assume so. If not, isn't this a simple way round the new number plate law?

I'd heard that stick-ons were OK if on a vertical flat surface. Otherwise a no-no except for some strange exception for the E-Type Jag.

How annoying that law's so damn vague!

Dear Folks

I have been reading this thread and wonder if anyone knows where I can get the "stick-on" type number plate (not just the number and letters).

Any help would be appreciated.

I would like this on my Dolomite Sprint

I recall an article in the Caravan Club magazine, some 18 months or so since, regarding number plates for caravans. They were saying it was illegal to make up your own plates with stick-on letters. All plates had to conform to some new regs and had to include details of the company on the plate.

There was considerable correspondence on the caravanning newsgroup regarding this.

You can get one made up at Halfords, although I understand they are quite expensive in comparison with other dealers. Why not look in Yellow Pages?

Unfortunately, you now have to take loads of means of identification before they can make the plate for you. See here. www.dvla.gov.uk/vehicles/rnps.htm

If I recall correctly, self-made stick-on plates are no longer legal as from a year or so ago.
Caravan suppliers etc. were allowed to sell existing stocks (after all, you can't tell when a plate has been made up at home) but no new supplies of reflective backing plates or letters would be available.

Yes I was in Halfords looking for a paper number plate and the letters and numbers to make up a plate for my trailer board. The guy there said they're now illegal to sell and you have to have a "real" plate made up costing £13.99.I was also in a branch of Motorworld who did have the plates and almost all the letters/numbers i needed.I was in the Cumbria area and they'd run out of the "P"'s for the Preston licensing area

My local hardware shop sells stick on letters and numbers in a variety of sizes, in black, white or gold. They have many other uses apart from car number plates.

...and I thought the P registration I keep seeing in Cumbria (north bit of) was for Penrith. Doh!

I don't think that 'E' types are exempt from the rules. It is just that the people who drive them don't tend play gangsta rap too loudly and wear their hats back to front. This may mean that Plod turns a blind eye! I am pretty sure that one make and model of car would not be exempt from rules about flat surfaces for sumber plates!

If you have one on your car and it's legible then it is perfectly legal.
It is no longer legal to buy and use new ones.
retailers are allowed to sell their existing stock but once it's gone it's gone.

If you want to buy a new number plate from a place such as Halfords you must produce a form of ID such as a drivers licence and the V5 for the car.

apart from there use on caravans and trailers, I think they really spoil the front of a car.

On the DVLA site -

"Are stick-on number plates legal?

No, number plates must meet the British Standard requirements and we are not aware of any self-adhesive number plates that are able to meet these requirements."

The DVLA faq refers to stick on number plates on vehicles.

Like most other sailors, the trailer board for my boat has a stick on number plate. From what I've read it would appear this is still legal, but if I need to change it, I will need to have a number plate made, and show the relevant documentation.

Does this sound right?

It sounds right but stupid. I'd just buy some ordinary stick-on letters. Who can disprove how old it is? Who wants to anyway?

I've just stuck some letters from the ironmongers on the painted panel on my old tractor. They cost 25p each.

I read on one of the caravanning sites that someone made up his number plate using Powerpoint on his pc. He printed the registration on orange coloured paper, and laminated it.

Probably illegal, but who's to know?

I think E-types were originally sold with stick-on front plates, which is probably why they are allowed. What you do now if you need to replace an E-type plate, I wouldn't know.
