I scraped off some bird muck on my windscreen and ended up leaving lots of fine scratches. Ordinarily I wouldn't be too bothered but these scratches are right in my line of vision so I need to get rid of them.
There are plenty of methods on youtube but mainly American and the products some are using are not sold here.... Read more
Discovered a "noise" from the front end, which I assumed to be a wheel bearing that needed replacement. V.W. informed me it was in fact a gearbox problem - namely the differential bearing. Gearbox -a sealed unit - needed to be replaced. Cost £4,500!!!! (Bearing cost £50 Max.!) Apparently there are no workshop manual instructions for this bearing replacement on the agent's computer. CAN YOU BELIEVE IT??
Anyone else had this problem? Read more
So why don't F1 cars only have three gears?
Because they have no useful torque below 9000 rpm?
Hi,
My friends Nissan Almera 2005 SX (1.5 i think) Manual petrol car has a strange starting problem. When you turn the key you can hear the starting solinoid clicking but it does not turn over or atempt to start... she got a jump start and it started straight away. So she bought a brand new battery and still the same problem. I thought it was the alternator so got a multimeter and with car off the volts was about 12.3 and then with the engine on it went to 14.4 ... turned on fog lights, AC, radio etc and volts was 14.1 or there abouts.... Putting 24V into a 12V system is going to fry something eventually.
I wouldn't....
I could do with help and opinions on the following:
I was coming home on Christmas Eve in my Mazda 6 2009 which was purchased in July at a Mazda dealer with 1 year warranty. The Oil light flickered on and off about 10 minutes into my journey so I began to get concerned. Around 2 minutes later it came full on do I began to look for somewhere to pull over. I Watson the A1 in heavy traffic and moved over into the slow lane to find somewhere to stop. The oil light then went full on and I started to hear a rattling sound. I found a lay by and pulled into it. As I slowed down the engine cut out and I stopped the car. Then I called Mazda recovery and was recovers to my home just after Christmas I had the car taken taken to Mazda and they checked it over.
After review they explained an injector had leaked carbon into the sump which blocked the sump gauze(?) so no oil reached the engine. They said it is not a straightforward warranty claim. My argument is that I stopped as soon as possible safely.
The only other factor is that I had a service with Mazda 4 weeks ago. It was due a major but I did a minor due to being short on cash. The minor did include an oil change and oil filter and they did not saying would void my warranty. They also said it wouldn't have found this issue.
I am now waiting for the warranty company inspector to review the car. The cost of a partial engine would be £6700 at retail who his out of the question for me to cover!
Thoughts appreciated!

Though My replies old.... This is complete t***.. I have seen the strainer removed and replaced, 2 minute job once the sumps off.
OK, please advise: does the strainer "simply" prise off ? .... or is there a hidden retaining bolt or subtle unscrewing required ?...
The golf drives really well apart from take off in drive after a run of @ 10miles, there is a judder between first and second gear, which is really annoying. Has anyone else had this problem and if so what was the cure. Another problem is If it is the clutch plates, I presume this would not be covered under the 3 year warranty and will be costly.
If anyone has succesfully got the repair done under warranty, can you tell me which VW dealer repaired the car, the golf was bought from new and has done @ 26k and driven only by myself. (based in Manchester)... Read more
You are experiencing the typical dsg shudder which affects ALL vw golf 6s with a 1.4 tsi or 1.2tsi engine coupled with a dry clutch dsg gearbox. It first rears its head at around 25-30k (though I have heard of issues around 13k) and is usually fixed by a new clutch pack or/and mechatronic unit.
ALL these cars either had a free replacement gearbox OR free extended warranty in the US, Asia and Australia but of course not in the UK where both VW and their franchised dealers continue to pretend (going on 5 years now) that no manufacturer's defect exists. ...
Hi there,
i have a 2005 polo 1.2 that is shaking and feels like it is missing and in for a service with a local quick fit type place they have advised that the engine has a coil pack gone and needs replacing, and they said it is best to replace all three?... Read more
Yes but it is all the cars fault...
Hi there, I wonder if anyone is able to help and provide advice. I bought a 2005/05 BMW 530d M-Sport at the weekend that is in great condition, with full service history and all of the paperwork. It drives like a dream.
As I was driving it home from where I bought it, and sitting in heavy London traffic, the i-drive popped up suddenly to say "central electronics failure - you are unable to continue your journey. Please contact BMW" (or words to that effect). Not knowing quite what to do as I was sitting at a red light, the message then vanished and I continued my journey. There didn't appear to be anything untoward with the car. I checked the i-drive diagnostics and it had no errors whatsoever. That message has not appeared since.... Read more
Has it been fitted with a different radio/CD, that can cause problems with the ECU which can discharge the battery.
I have been told by a dealer (not a jaguar dealer) that the xf has a cam chain rather than a belt. I recently had my s type belt changed so that when I sell it that's been done.
But can you confirm for me about the xf as I don't want to buy one then a few days after have to have the belt done
Your time is appreciated. Read more
Yes mine is diesel. So I take it that the 2.7 diesel xf is a belt. Do you know about the 3.0 diesel is that a belt as well.
Started the car today and the "yellow oil can over water" symbol flashed. In the handbook it says "Diesel in engine oil" but the multi information display says "Change Engine Oil. Service Due"
The car was registered on 28th Nov 2011 and its booked in for its first service on 27th Dec 2012 (well within the one month window for the warranty)... Read more
The oil level is fine - bang on maximum. A second dealership confirmed that the light is timed to come on if its due a service unless the oil is diluted with diesel which in is not the case here.
Cam belt changed 5 months ago by vw and has now snapped 4k miles later after the tensioner stud snapped. This has been undone and retention when the belt was put back, i don’t think that a stud should just snap unless it was over tensioned or not do up. Anyone else got any idea as the VW garage is saying it’s not there problem even though there work is covered by 2 year and belt by a year. Read more
Hi new on here, hence the very late response to this thread. It is the same engine, tensioner studs and injector issues are just 2 of the list of issues this engine has. With exception to the bkd engine code, they also have many oil pump issues. there are many issues with electronic actuators and motors on the inlet and egr causing running problems, or emission lights to come on. The fuel filters are known for blocking up prematurely, either with engine oil from an internal leak in the tandem fuel pump, or combustion gases from leaking tapers where the injector seats in the head at piston top. Going back to the tensioner stud, i think the main issue is the fine thread that holds it into the cylinder head. After the 2nd timing telt replacement, the threads aren't upto the job in the alloy head due to over tightening the first time, and the cause of the stud breaking is due to it bending when these threads fail which occurs due to it being disturbed. On the 1.9 tdi pd engine the tensioner stud is similar, except the cylinder head thread is much coa***r and stronger, and having repaired v.a.g vehicles for 21years, have never come across a failure on a 1.9 single cam pd engine, only the 2.0 twin cam. Many dealers are unaware of this issue, simply because they rarely see it, most of the vehicles thry repair may have the first belt change with them, but the car then gets repaired outside the dealer network, hence why we see it and not them. I'm going to stop now before any one else falls asleep reading this. ;-p
"a small bottle of cerium oxide in thick liguid form"
Yes - cerium oxide is the stuff - the next step if that won't get the scratch out is diamond compound.
