Folks,
Is there VAT on Road Tax?
How do I keep my accountant/VAT man happy by providing the right documents, and how can I get hold of them? I piad at the local Post Office this morning, and they were not particularly helpful or knowledgable. I did manage to negociate (!) a VAT number from them, but VAT breakdown was not shown.
Rather than wading through some cumbersome government site, can anyone give a quick answer?
Thanks very much.

Can anyone tell me how to replace it, and maybe save me some time. I guess the whole light assy has to come out? How? It is a 5 dr hatchback. Thanks for your anticipated help. Read more
Just done the same job today for the first time.
Two problems.
1. No mention of the additional locator that pushes into a nylon socket. Having taken out the screw and the wing nut I was reluctant to tug too hard to release the whole unit.
2. My Motorcraft spare twin filiment bulbs from the Sierra did not fit. I had an "interesting" discussion with a shop on the subject but got the "new" bulbs.
This was the first time I became aware that there are different 5W/21W bulbs. There are a full spare set of bulbs in each of the family cars so pleased it came to light so to speak at home where it was reasonably easily sorted.
Be aware centre stop light and front indicators on Mk1 both need a T20 Torx driver.
The heaters on our vauxhall carlton are blowing out cold air what could this be? Read more
Have you had any heat this autumn? If you do as I do and leave the slider for the heat off (set to fully cold) all summer it could be the heater matrix valve is not opening now you require it. Can you hear or feel the mechanism working when you operate the heater control? Somewhere on the engine bay bulkhead will be the two pipes from the engine cooling system to pipe hot water into & out of the heater matrix. Sorry I don't know the Carlton well so a more knowledgeable expert or a Haynes Manual will help you here. If the Carlton is typically Vauxhall the actual heater matrix will be buried deep inside the dashboard. See if the inlet & outlet pipes are both hot. I do however suspect you have an airlock as suggested in another reply. I would be surprised if the heater was poor if working correctly as my cold morsel of a wife always loves Vauxhalls for their very hot heaters! With our Cavalier and Corsa you can grow tomatoes in the car in winter they can get so hot.
Hi,
I really am not having a good car week!
After my 306 died i now have to survive til saturday using my mums N Reg 1.1 Fiesta, but i discovered on monday evening the clutch is now slipping, even tho the car has only done 25000 miles!
I can make it slip by flooring it at 20 in third, and 4th and 5th gears are difficult to accelerate in at all.
Three questions - Is this the clutch itself going, or possibly another component such as the cable?
How long will it last like this before it is undrivable? It's doing 250 miles of mixed motorway and town driving this week
What is the best technique for driving a car with a slipping clutch? The way ive found best is to use lower gears than usual, keeping the revs up, which seems to stop the clutch slipping so badly when i accelerate(gently!). Read more
Thanks for your concern, Henry, i appreciate that this could be a problem, but at the moment there's very little slip in first and second, but coaxing fourth gear above 60 takes a long time! Bear in mind that this is a 1.1 Fiesta with 44bhp and a top speed as quoted in the manual of 88mph, so its not exactly a rocket anyway!
75 miles to go......
I'm starting to have problems with blocked washer jets. The jets have two outlets each and if I unblock one with a pin the gunge just seems to go into the other outlet. Is the root cause of the problem anything to do with the washer fluid I use? ~ approx 10% (stronger in the depth of winter) Halfords own brand. The car is 4.5 years old so is the problem now inevitable? I know that algae can breed in my bottle of diluted product if it is continually left in daylight.

Folks,
A question has been posted on another forum by a Hungarian XM guru regarding QH parts. They are turning up in Hungary for the first time.
Do honourable listmembers have any comments as to their quality?

My previous Superb mk I was fitted with a QH Front suspension bottom ball joint circa 2013. It was rubbish and lasted a couple of thousand miles. Garage fitted a replacement QH that failed quickly. Eventually OE fitted that I'm aware has since covered another 90k miles and still going strong.
My father passed away a few weeks ago and I am going to sell, on behalf of my mother, his car. There are a few questions I have that I’m sure the Forum can help with:
1.My Father is the registered keeper on the Registration document. Can I, or my mother sign the transfer part on his behalf or what happens regarding the DVLA.
2.What happens regarding temporarily insuring a deceased registered keeper's vehicle or will it have to be transferred in to say my mothers name first.
BTW the car has not been used on the road since his death as the existing insurance, in his name, I know would be invalid.
If anyone can advise I would be grateful.
Charles

The deceased's executors or personal representatives take over that role.
As for the registration document not proving ownership of the car, just who the registered keeper is - that's true, but in any dispute, the courts would want other evidence before coming to a conclusion contradicting the V5.
In the absence of other evidence, such as a bill of sale, then it's pretty much conclusive.
I almost drove straight through a sharp unlit country bend yesterday as the headlights on my car seemed very dim, or certainly didn't light the way ahead very clearly.
I usually drive on lit roads so they probably have always been like this without me noticing.
Is it possible to fit brighter bulbs? Don't want to irritate other drivers.
How can I test the alignment? (MOT 2 months ago, they check this don't they?).
Car is: V70 R, 1999.
(Dashboard light height adjuster is working fine).
Thanks,

I've been told that in the case of early Mk 3 Cavaliers (1988 on) that had dim dip from new, it is best to get the dim dip disconnected now its not a legal requirement in the UK as the transformer often catch fire! Has anybody else heard this story? The last two or three years production didn't have dim dip as far as I know as the requirement had been dropped by about 1993. Certainly my dim dip stopped working mysteriosly just after a main dealer service back in about 1994 when they had obviously been in the area of the driver's footwell side kick panel where I'm told the dim dip electrics are situated.
I've been informed by Mercedes-Benz that their 30-year anti-corrosion warranty was introduced in October 1998. I had been under the illusion that it was much older, but I guess they did it as a marketing tactic to recover the ground they lost with that rusting first generation of the new E-class from 1996 onwards. Ah well, it won't stop me enjoying my 1996 W124, whose paint warranty lasted all of a year, and perhaps this will be interesting news to others too. Read more
Boring!!
I have a vauxhall corsa 1.0 12v -(The three cylinder one) and as the car is now 5 years old I have decided to undertaking some of the basic servicing myself. However the first problem was encountered late this afternoon. After jacking the car up to undo the oil drain plug I found I coundn't as it has a special type of plug fitted. Does anybody know the size and type of the socket I should purchase to enable me to change the oil.
Many thanks
Ian

I have a 2000 model Vectra, if this has the same as yours it is a T45 torx fitting, also, although i am not sure of your particular model, if the drain plug has a rubber washer fitted, just a gentle nip up is all thats needed, same with a copper washer type affair.
Hope this helps.
