Hello,
The alarm/immobiliser on my Renault Clio has decided to declare war on me. Without any provocation at all, the alarm decided to sound today (while the car was parked in the drive). It was driven earlier in the day and was fine. How rude.
I couldn't turn the alarm off with either keyfob. I had to disconnect the battery to silence it. Then, after reconnecting the battery, the immobiliser wouldn't deactivate, so now the car won't start... :-(
I also noticed a clicking relay noise... a bit like the relay sound that you hear when the indicators are operating, but this was much faster... it has since stopped.
Anyone have any ideas? Or do I have to bite the bullet and have Renault fix it?

In a previous discussion (archived) there appeared to be confusion regarding which type of oil to use in these engines.
I have a 2003 SEAT Alhambra fitted with the VW 1.9 (130bhp) TDI engine. I recently enquired as to what oil I should use. The first (main) dealer told me to use any 10:40 Diesel oil - when I queried this they said it's what trhey used in the workshop. Not content with this, I tried a second dealer. They told me that they used Castrol 5:40 (I saw this in Halfords and it does not meet the VW 50501 Standard) adding that there was also one recommended by VW. The third dealer said that I had to use a specific VW oil which they supplied although they said I could use Quantum (VW's aftermarket brand - cheaper for German specialist parts retailers) as long as it was the one specified for PD engines. My local supplier sells this for £25 for 5 litres.
I'm concered as it would appear from my experience that 2 out of 3 dealers don't know what they are taking about. I also don't want to pay in the region of £50 - £70 for the same oil I can buy for £25 - or even worse the wrong oil. Can I supply the main dealer with the quantum oil and insist they use my oil - as it's VW it should not affect the warranty. Does anyone have any thoughts or experiences? Read more
Millers and Valvoline both do a 505.01 oil for about £20/5 litres. I believe that Valvoline also do a 506.01 oil but I don't know the price.
Hi,
My 1999 Focus' engine has a habit of stuttering or jumping while driving. It happens all the time but seems worse in cold weather.
When I go in to view the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (hold in the reset button on the odometer and start the car then scroll through the options) it is showing the following DTC - 9202 which, according to the index, means "Fuel Sender Open Circuit". What I need to know is what this means in English and what I need to tell my mechanic to get it fixed.
Very greatful for any advice.
Thanks.

Can you please confirm what is being said here. My wife's '99 focus 1.6 has a hesitation like a brief misfire when changing up or when increasing the throttle opening. It is only brief and does not always occur. Is this the known problem you speak about and is it caused by a faulty fuel pump or a faulty tank sender? I am having difficulty seeing how the tank sender can cause a hesitation problem unless the ECU uses the signal in some way.
Many Thanks

I am currently in the market for a new Softroader and have narrowed the choice down to either a Honda CRV SE executive or a Nissan Xtrail 2.5 SVE. I still have to test drive both. Read more
Incedently according to Honda the CRV diesel won't be out till end of this year at the earliest and more likely around this time next year.
Regarding the earlier thread on the ride "quality" of the Jazz a few of you might recall my past criticisms. of our own car known to us as "Mr Bumpy".
Anyway to get to the point. For a while now we have noticed a noise coming from the engine from cold untill it was warmed up. this was mentioned to the garage and it was left to me to arrange to leave the car overnight for them to check it out.
In the meantime we decided to finally get rid of the Jazz and started looking for a replacement. During this time the noise was getting worse but as it was still under warranty concentrated on seeking a replacement.
We finally decided to stay with the Honda brand and yesterday secured a good deal on a pre-registered pre-facelift model Civic Exetutive 1.6. While in the showroom I mentioned to service that the noise was now worse.
Imagine my surprise on recieving a call today from service requesting me to book the car in for a replacement engine!.
I was informed that the noise I described was in fact piston slap which is beginning to appear in earlier models up, to a certain chassis no.
Iam relieved to have sold the car in time to avoid the hassle of having the work done but someone is going to end up with a car in mintb condition with hundreds of pounds of extras and a brand new engine

An update. My second-hand Jazz CVT did not turn out to be the car I had expected it to be. Goodness knows what had happened to it. After covering 800 miles in it I had compiled quite a list of concerns and I had to activate the Honda Exchange programme to change the car.
Having had burnt my fingers with the used CVT Jazz, I decided to take a big risk and go a brand new Honda Jazz 1.4 iVTEC SE i-SHIFT. I took one for a good test drive and on balance decided I could live with the compromise.
If you'd like to read about my learning experiences with the i-SHIFT you are welcome to read my blog at dunkvshondaishift.blogspot.com

Having nearly ordered through Ukcarbroker.com, I noticed Broadspeed could knock another few hundred pounds off a Mondeo TDCi Ghia X Estate with the 10 or so factory options I wanted (comes aout at £19,043 (24% discount) against Ford list £24,925).
I sent the pre-order and waited 24hrs for the phone call for them to take the £150 admin fee. I then called them, and was told that the Mondeos are in stock. When I pointed out that I had quite a few factory orders they sai it would take 8 - 10 weeks which was what I expected, plus I wanted a March delivery anyway.
Anyway, as the conversation went on they said they have a back log of 300 orders from the Xmas holiday and that I'd hear within 5 days, with a quote. When I asked if the quote would be the same as what I have effectively ordered they said it should be but might not cos it will be a factory order!!!!
Has anyone had any experience of ordering a factory order car through them?? I feel that if they give you an online quote with all the factory options itemsed that that should be the price you pay, similar to if I ordered a car through the dealer.
I will have to wait till Monday earliest now to see if the price will change, but feel they'll probably come back and want extra money, which will mean I can't afford the model I want!!! In which case I'll probably just order a Primera 2.2 dCi T-spec Estate.

Got a much better deal through newvehiclediscounts.com. I compared with broadspeed and got an extra 300 off.
HI all, me again (don't groan)
Can someone help to settle a dispute? On traffic lights there are little grey boxes on top of traffic lights which look a lot like sensors. Is this what they are? I have had a number of ideas...some as stupid as the next:
a) sensors to control lights
b) sensors to detect pedestrians
c) red light cameras (I am doubtful about this one; if they were capable of that, why put up the massive ones that are definitely cameras?)
d) (My personal favourite...) CCTV cameras......
Needless to say, I really want to know what they are now...so...WHAT ARE THEY? Please...
Many thanks...
Adam

If they're the big grey boxes they are putting up in Manchester, about 6x2 foot,it's to stop crazy motorists who got caught by the speed cameras shooting them out.
Morning All,
Two days ago our VW Bora Tdi had a warning light and a message 'Engine Workshop' flash up on the dash. The warning light is that of the glow plugs. I think that the engine is not starting quite on the button as normal, although it's marginal. The car has done 59,000 miles, I'm wondering if a glow plug has failed and this is what the warning symbols are registering. The engine seems fine in all other respects, but obviously it has come at an awkward time and I don't imagine we will be able to get it dealt with before Monday. We'd like to use the car over the weekend.
Has anyone had this experience on a VW or VAG car?
Appreciate any help,
Heebee. Read more
Gordon Bennett, I'm not doing very well tonight.
So bertj had suggested I check the brake lights. Right, I thought, do that in the morning.
Next morning, forget all about it and set off for a day out in Derbyshire, with wife and mother in law.
During trip up, I notice the cruise control isn't working. Hmmm, I think, but don't say anything 'cos MIL will start harping on at us to buy a new motor. She's from the days of Allegros and Marinas, and thinks any more than 20k miles and the bottom is falling out of the car. She thinks we should be in a Daewoo Matiz, or Perodua Iranu, anything so long as its brand new.
At lunch time I suddenly remember the brake lights. We check, and lo! only the centre light is working.
Grope around in boot trying to gain access to rear light clusters. Give up and consult multi-volume handbook. It usefully tells me that due to the complex nature of the light units requiring much underbonnet dismantling (eh?) I should take the car to a main dealer. Yeah, right.
Grope some more and gain access. Not well thought out light units. Pinch two of the four rear fog bulbs and hey presto! Warning light and 'ENGINE WORKSHOP' message goes out, and cruise control working once more.
Wa-Hey! Thanks guys.
A nice simple one I hope:
Do common-rail diesels and VW PD TDI engines have glow plugs? If so, are they needed all the time, or only for very cold ambient conditions?
TIA.

This thread illustrates perfectly one of the things I love about this forum.
A very simple basic question has brought forward all manner of interesting and related anecdotes, and taught me quite a few things I didn't know before.
Hi,
I decided to save money and drive to Austria this year for my snowboarding holiday. The missus and I are catching the train to Calais with the car on a Friday night, plan on driving a few hours, stay overnight somewhere cheap, and then onto Austria in the morning.
Problem is, it's a looong drive! I think I underestimated the distance and time...The longest drive I've ever done is about 500Km's in the Australia outback and there were no navigational issues there!
So, does anyone have any tips on driving this distance on the continent? Anything that makes long drives that bit less stressful? How about navigating over there? Are there any areas or roads to avoid?
As you can see, I'm keen for any tips to make my life easier!
Thanks

I am doing this same trip at the Feb half term. I have arranged a stop at a Novotel hotel just outside Brussels(Accorhotels.com)for 60euro per night for a family of 3 in 1 room, breakfast is 14euro and free for kids under 16. It is on the motorway route at Lueven and having used this chain of hotels before they are a good standard for a very reasonable price. I would agree that the trip round Munich is dreadful and would suggest the route via Nurnberg A3 rather than Stuttgart as the hold ups are generally much less. I have lived in Germany for several years and have regularly done the trip south as a result and this has always been the better option. I now use the A3 via Frankfurt and Nurnberg out of preference to Ulm/Stuttgart. My usual route is Brussels/Koln/Koblenz then A48 towards the A3 to Nurnberg and A9 to Munich.Follow signs for the airport to go the right way found the ring road and pick up the A8 towards Saltzburg. From then on it will depend on which part of the Tirol you want. Snow chains are essential once you get into the resort areas and police have been known to turn people back if they don't have them fitted. Also don't forget the Motorway tax for Austria as the police are very hot at picking up those who think they can get away with it for just a short distance espessially at this peak time. Other than that have a great trip and safe driving.
thanks for dredging up this thread from years ago as I now have the same issue
