I`m in the process of selling my Audi and have only just noticed on the V5 document they show the car as a 3 door and
not 5 :(

Should I notify the DVLA or let the garage sort it out? Read more

Happy Blue!

I have a situation similar to Adski's coming up.

Just P/xed one car for a another. The old one was in my wife's name, but Dad did the deal for the new one and bought it in his name. Two days later he decides that he doesn't like the new car, so I have taken it over.

For insurance purposes, the car now needs to be registered to me or my wife. Without increasing the number of registered keepers, I need to get the name changed.

My broker says just write to the DVLA and tell them that there was a mistake and that the new car should have been registered in wifes name, but that Dad's name was put on becuase he physically negotiated the deal. Will this wash?

I'm Still naving problems with the gearchange on the Yaris when cold. 1st-2nd and 2nd to 3rd are very chrunchy.

This problem started when I changed the gear oil for Toyota 75w-90 gear oil. The dealer eventually changed the oil for Shell Donax TA (ATF) which made a big difference but the poor gearchange when cold remains

A friend has reccomended Red Line MT90. Should I give this a try or would I be best to leave alone?

Thanks,

Nice to see my old thread is still hopefully helping people. Kept the Yaris for 13 years and it's still going strong according to the MOT history. During its life with us the gear change was kept smooth with one more oil change with Redline MTL and occasional clutch bleeding. Never got to the root of the clutch judder in winter.

I reckon it's condesnation on the flywheel in cold weather...

By heck, it's been a while since I was last here and I remembered the great advice given so where better to post this?

I've a 99 Corolla and because I am disabled I rarely use it so the poor thing's stood for most of the time. The problem is that I live near a wood, and the window rubber, side bumper strips, boot plastic etc., anywhere there's rubber protective plastic is going green and leaving green run marks down the car :( It looks blooming awful. So I've two questions, firstly is there some kind of treatment I can use for this? Some type of cleaner or detergent or anti-mould thing that I can add to washing water that will both clean it away without damaging the vehicle and that helps prevent it growing again? (Ok so it won't be me washing it by hand, I won't be able to)

Secondly, there's no garage, car port or any kind of shelter available to put the car into to protect it, are you guys aware of anything else I could use to cover the vehicle to help protect it? Those huge protective sheets are pretty much out of the question, stretching is not at all easy, and the elasticated versions require upper arm strength which I don't have, but maybe there's an improved version out there since I last tried them. Any ideas please?

Thanks :) Read more

Hi All,

Aldi are doing their sat nav kits again £20 cheaper than earlier this year. They are now £249.99 and will be on sale from the 11th November but am sure like last time stocks will quickly go.

My Father bought one ealier this year and has found it excellent. It does not have the '3D effect' like Tom Tom but never the less gives very good voice and graphic instructions. Don't know which software is on this version though.

Its still a good cheap offer though!

Look at uk.aldi.com/ and click on 'speicial buys' for more info.

Cheers

I was driving along with the navigation system telling where to turn when I noticed the voice instructions were out of sync with the map. The nice lady was getting confused and telling me to turn right in 100 yards and the repeating the instruction again just after I had taken the right turn. She was also saying "kilometres" instead of miles.

Had she been drinking, taking prescription drugs or just a typical female who finds map reading difficult.

Tried again a couple of hours later and she had got her act together.

Hi all,

Well this is a new one on me - this evening both brake lights ceased to work on my '01Y Octavia estate (not bulb failure), however the LED 3rd brake light above the back window still lights up fully when braking, but it remains dimly lit all the time the engine is on.
Where do I start looking?

Cheers,

Dave.

Oh yes, and it's done 249,350 miles. Never had anything remotely like this before though. Read more

Does anyone know where I can buy a Coolant Temperature Sensor for a K reg Renault Clio online or by mail order.

Also do you know where abouts in the engine compartment it is.

A Part Number would be nice too.

p.s. I live in the Leeds area.

As somebody who has owned 13 Renaults in my family over the past 15 years and covered at least 15000mls a year in each I have used Renault parts many times. I have always found my local main dealer to be very competitive with prices - often beating the "trade factors" just down the road for all sorts of parts. Perhaps it just depends on where you live. . .

how can a bulb be out of focus? It is just
a light source. The mirror reflector does all the focussing.

>>

True in a way, but really the focusing is a product of the relative positions of the bulb and reflector. This is normally pre-set, but as has been pointed out, a badly seated bulb, or a rusty reflector, or a bent locating lug, could put the assembly out of focus. It is true I can't see how an aging bulb in itself could get out of focus, unless the filament can move somehow.

Originally bulbs were adjustable for focus. I had a car with enormous Lucas P80 "King of the Road" headlamps on stalks. The bulbs had to be focused by releasing a clamp and moving them in and out in relation to the reflector. The reflectors had to be polished with silvo, and the electromagnetic dipping mechanism cleaned and adjusted. This was a device that pivotted the reflector inside the headlamp shell. Only the nearside reflector dipped - the offside was extinguished via a contact on the dipping reflector.

Then British Pre-focus dual-filament bulbs came in, along with chromed reflectors that rusted and couldn't be re-silvered.

Anyone know how the self-leveling mechanism operates on Xenon headlights and how quickly they are supposed to react?

The reason that I ask is that a car following me tonight (Audi A4 or Passat, I think) produced two distictive 'flashes' of his lights whenever he hit a bump in the road. It looked like the control mechanism was over-compensating for a brief period.

Although I don't know much about these systems, there is a fairly obvious problem to consider when designing the controller.

You need to make sure that the lights aren't going to dazzle people, so you need to make the control loop fast enough to deal with changes in the car's attitude, possibly caused by variations in road gradient. However, you also need to make sure that the lights don't respond to every bump and jolt - I can imagine that might make for nauseating progress!, not to mention the annoyance caused for other drivers. So, the problem is, how to define and implement the cut off.

My first guess at implementing this would be to use a low pass filter with a bandwidth some factor below the pitch frequency of the car on its springs. This would allow headlamp aim corrections slower than the pitch frequency, and block those faster inputs which excite the car in pitch vibration. To approximate this in a cheap and automotive way, you could just specifiy a headlamp aim motor which will run slowly!

Hi Chaps,
The exhaust on my W reg Mk4/5, 1.25 Zetec fiesta has started to blow just where the pipe goes into middle silencer, weld has gone. I have never changed an exhaust before on a Fiesta and its the original one from new and it looks like the whole thing, from the flanged joint with the two bolts, rearwards has to be replaced. The rear box has started to rust also, so it might be worth replacing at the same time as its an all in one system.
How easy a job is this and can anyone tell me what the cost of parts is likely to be ?
Pipe fracture looks imminent, so i would appreciate any help as soon as possible please.
Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

Hi, A friend of mine has a 6 month old Astra. This morning it wouldn?t start when first tried. It then started but the ?Exhaust emission? light came on and has stayed on. Her dealer says that they can?t look at the car for a week. Question is, can she drive the car in the meantime without doing any harm to the car and without being in any danger?
Any thoughts appreciated.
Thanks.

Amazing, same fault with my Astra has just come up. Booked in for Saturday, luckily still in warranty. Can't spot any running problems, but it was reluctant to start once last week. The handbook actually says there's a risk of damage to the car only when the light flashes, and not when it's on continuously. Even suggests throttling back to get the light steady.
