VW Polo 1.6 tdi - Repeat diesel injector failure - Tony Riella

I have a 2010 VW Polo 1.6tdi

56k and I've had two separate injector failures and subsequent replacements, at £500 a time its not been a cheap ride, last night the same fault reoccurred.

Both mechanics told me that an injector failure under 90k was unlucky... But two is massively unlucky

Now a potential 3rd...

Help, is there another underlying fault that's causing the injectors to fail?

Its not a fuel issue as I've been buying the premium diesel since the first breakdown.

Sadly ,the 1.6 diesel has proven to be one of the most unreliable Vw engines. Injectors and egr valves are common failures. Not much you can do ,more likely down to poor qualty components.

Yeah, bout time to offload my Polo too me thinks. Same basic engine minus a cylinder but just at that age and mileage where it all goes wrong on them. Wasn’t aware of the problems this engine suffered from when I bought it nearly 4yrs ago I was going on past experience with VW diesels all of which had been good and to be fair mine has been ok other than an EGR which VW did under the two year warranty they gave if you allowed the emissions “fix” done.

As SLO76 has reminded, did you get a letter from VW for the emissions fix.

If so & you havn't had it done, get it booked in.

Once completed it covers the following emissions related items for 2 years :-

  • Lambda probe
  • Temperature sensor
  • EGR changeover valve
  • Exhaust gas re-circulation valve
  • Exhaust gas re-circulation pressure differential sensor
  • Injector
  • High pressure pump
  • Fuel rail
  • Pressure control valve
  • Pressure sensor
  • High pressure pipelines

Definately worth having done on this engine with poor EGR reliability ( expensive fix ) as well as others, which unfortunately you have already paid out for.

What VW group say are covered and then trying to get them to honour it are worlds apart. The number of post fix cars with issues are huge and VW is ducking responsibility on most of them. A number of their engines such as the 1.6 tdi are basically poorly designed and unreliable to start with and the fix makes them even worse. I had mine from new and and it has had a succession of failures, all engine related. Twice had to have the vehicle recovered after engine failures then a new EGR at 40,000 and now all four injectors at 46,000. VAG group certainly don't merit being included in the quality car bracket. My Fiats have been much more reliable.

They replaced my EGR valve during that 2yr added cover and well beyond the original warranty term. They also replaced a seatbelt mechanism a year after the warranty was up for free too and replaced and fixed the boot lock 3 times foc which has been a right pain in the backside and has now failed again for the fifth time. I can’t fault their willingness to pay for repairs outwith the warranty term but the cars are sadly not up to the standard set by the Japanese when it comes to reliability.

I wish I had stuck with the old 1.9tdi engine when I bought my Roomster. Instead I was persuaded to go for the then latest 1.6tdi. It has been an absolute dog. Several engine related breakdowns necessitating a vehicle recovery, then an EGR failed at 40K and now all four injectors at 46,000. The VW group response...don't want to know!.
