I've always had my oil & filter changed at Halfords with Magnatec 10-40 in my old petrol vectra and its been fine, but i now have a vectra 2.0 Dti and i intend changing the oil every 5000 mls so not sticking with the flexi service, going onto eco-service ( its a Vectra C 03 by the way ) the thing is Magnatec 10-40 normal oil states its a A3/B3 would this be ok for my diesel. Peugeot 306 2.0 Diesel HDi. History: Car broke down, diagnosis by AA was fuel pump. Pump was seized (This is the fuel pump that sits in the tank) I replaced the pump with another VDO part.
Since then intermittently the engine will only rev up to a maximum of 2,300 rpm. Its like it is limited at 2,300. The only way to stop it is to switch off a few times and restart it. Sometimes it is ok for a few days, other times I can't clear it at all. I have tried taking the battery off to reset the ECU, but no joy. I suspect it is either an ECU problem or something to do with the fuel supply? When it does do it and I switch off the engine appears to run on for a few seconds, could this be a clue?
Also last night it now stalls when I take my foot off the gas whilst driving, could be related? Does anyone have any idea whats going on with this car>? Could anyone please point me in the right direction??
Cheers

Just want to add what solved the problem when my 2.0HDI had the same problems.
First of all Peugeot changed the ERG valve, this did not solve the problem. I then took it to a diesel specialist and he said that if the fault codes say a fuel preasure problem then it wont be the ERG valve so dont let them con you into changing this like they did me....
One of my tyres is loosing about 2psi every week (200 miles).
I've put the wheel in a bath of water and a small bubble emerged from one place on the rim.
Is there any easy way to fix this or do I need to get another wheel?
(I can't have a tube fitted because they aren't made for the tyre size 155/65 R13)
Thanks.

Why use tubes in tubeless tyres, well if you had a Metro with alloys you'd know why, I think they bought the technology off Typhoo or was it PG Tips?

I'm hoping to start at college in September and learn a trade but am wondering what sort of money mechanics make? That is self employed as well as working for someone else.
I've been heading towards gas installation for the past year, but I'm not decided and can only say that cars interest me far more than gas boilers. I done about 6 months with a gas installer / plumber so I know what the work is like, but I have no experience with car mechanics. Read more
I earn far more as a self-employed IT consultant than I did when employed by a company. I think in general that the only way to earn good money is to work for yourself e.g. self employed gas engineer, plumber etc. The exception to the rule seems to be the financial and legal sector where solicitors, lawyers, etc can rake it in. I have heard that a lot of people are re-training to be plumbers and this might also be true of gas engineers. I suspect that a gas engineer is more secure though due to the need for gov. recognised qualifications before you can do work.

I am struggling to get my 1999 1.2 16v Corsa SXi (corsa B model) into gear and I am really baffled as to what is the cause.
You see, its absolutely no problem when the engine is cold, its only a problem when I have been driving around for 15 - 20 mins and the engine has got to running temperature. Once that happens I have difficulty getting the car into any gear. Although the clutch pedal is to the floor, when you come to change gear it feels like its just got that little bit more to go in order to completely disengage the clutch.
Checked the Haynes manual which talks about component problems, but surely if my clutch plates etc. were worn the fault would occur all the time, not just when the engine is up to running temperature?
Someone at work suggested it might have an hydraulic clutch but the manual says nothing - although my car also has electronic PAS but the manual tells you nothing about that either.

It's a long time ago for you now but can you recall if the problem was due to the GB oil being too low?
Would like to know how you resolved since I may have th same fault right now. Thanks.
Can anyone explain the sudden growth in dual mass flywheels. My local independent tells me they have to change these on Transits and Sprinters quite frequently (£400 on the sprinter) as well as several cars. Not bad if under warranty, but horrendously expensive if you have to do it yourself
I appreciate that the theory is they help to cushion gearchanges and make this smoother, but I did not think this was really a problem, particularly on light vans Read more
It does seem an unnecessary complication, especially as they don't appear to be too reliable (and how many will need replacing after 100k miles or so?). I was amused to see this (US) site offering 'solid flywheel conversion kits', which look like they might just be made a bit chunkier to achieve a similar end...

What is a 'Zetec' engine and how does it differ from a 'bog-standard' Focus engine? I'm after a 1.8 and everyone says get a Zetec.

Ford say 100k and that is good enough for me. My (largish) Ford dealer says they have never known a 1.8 or 2.0 petrol Focus cambelt fail at less than 120k.

Hi Guys,
I have recently bought my first diesel (2001 Passat TDI130) and it is a lovely car. However I have noticed in the last few days that the temp gauge does not appear to work all the time. There are times when the gauge will start to rise to normal operating temp (90degc) but then fall back to 50. On other occasions it just doesn?t move at all.
I am not familiar with the TDI engine as yet as I have had petrol cars for the last 10yrs so I?d appreciate any advice you can give.
Thanks in advance

If the connector to the temp sensor is ok the the sensor has failed, common problem. Regards Peter
Good morning all!
I own a HONDA CIVIC 1.6 SE VTEC (Y-REG 2001) and the red 'SRS' warning light has come on and will not go out.
Have referred to owners manual which states I should seek advice of Honda dealer!!
Have done this, but have been told that a technician needs to'read'for the fault code with some very expensive equipment....and Honda wants to charge me nearly £40 for the privilege, before any subsequent repair costs!!
My friendly mechanic says this can be easily avoided by simply attaching a piece of wire to 2 particular sockets on the 16 - pin scart socket below the dash area.
However, upon his referring to an 'Autodata' package, it mentions socket numbers 4 and 9......but this seems to be a misprint as socket 9 has no connection in it.
Can anyone PLEASE HELP ME on this one - to clarify, the scart socket has 16 pins/sockets in total, 8 on the top row and 8 on the bottom row.
Needless to say, my local Honda dealership are less than forthcoming in helping!!
Many thanks in anticipation!!!! Read more

My brother has just bought a Toyota Avensis from a car supermarket. It's the T3S model.
He is under the impression that it comes with Sat Nav, but there doesn't appear to be the required screen as shown in the handbook, and unless the Sat Nav disc goes in the CD player slot, there doesn't appear to be a drive for the "Sat Nav disc" that was with the car.
Obviously he hasn't had a very satisfactory handover as it was not from a Toyota dealership. I just wondered if anybody out there knowsbefore he has to pay a visit to a main dealer.
