Hi, I have a Diesel Astra Isuzu engine-done 130K and its a bit lumpy and smokey on start up and I was told to put redex diesel in the tank to clean out the injectors but it hasnt made any diff. So as the car isnt worth enough to justify getting them cleaned professionally, I was told to pour Redex directly into the Fuel filter and start/turn over the engine to clean out the injectors....I know this sounds crude but as a DIY method is it worth doing/would it damage the engine?
Would appreciate your comments. Read more
I have just discovered that my Focus TDCi 115 is not as whizzy as it ought to be.
Symptoms: When I start to use more than 'normal' power, the engine appears to lose the will to pull. It's OK for say the first couple of bends on a nice B road, or an overtaking squirt on the motorway from 70mph, but after the 2 or so corners / straights or if I'm going at 80 and want to accelerate - nothing there. I thought it was the fabled dodgy fuel pump, but the only fault code we could foind was P1200 - 'faulty injector'. The technician said that he has seen a lot of TDCi's with knackered injectors (they seem particularly prone to damage)which feed back data to the ECU, which shuts down the fuel delivery, presumably to prevent further damage. it's not a critical fault, so the glow plug light does not flash. I am told that the best you can expect to pay for an injector is around £300 from an independent, but you still have to get the injector calibration details programmed in by Ford. I have also heard that this is illegal... Ford cannot stop other companies from doing the work. It seems that a mild dose of petrol or water will do an injector, so be careful.
I am stuck with an underperforming car, which I bought on the understanding that it was one of the most reliable cars out there. Wrong. Beware. Any advice would be most welcome.

(I know that !) shhhh.
I dropped off the Xantia today for its annual service and MOT. The chap who owns the garage business told me that the particle filter on the C5 2.2 HDI requires replacing at 60,000 miles. Is this correct? Apparently they cost around £400. Read more
I HAVE RECENTLY BOUGHT A CITROEN C5 2.0 VTR ESTATE AND YES THEY DO HAVE THE DREADED FILTER COZ THE ENGINE MANAGEMENT LIGHT HAS COME ON.MY MATE WHO IS A CITROEN MECHANIC TOLD ME A LITRE OF ADDITIVE COSTS AROUND £100 BUT YOU CAN BUY 1 LITRE OF JLM PAT FLUID WHICH IS THE EQUIVALENT TO CITROENS OWN FOR £34.80 PLUS VAT
We have a G Reg VW Golf and since Friday the battery lights have been staying on.
We got a brand new battery in January, so could it be a loose wire or something more serious?
The car starts and runs fine, but the lights stay on

well it turns out the fan belt had completely disappeared which would explain a lot!
it started running out of power yesterday and my boyfriend managed to get it to the garage so they're sorting it today :o)
My local garage changed the oil and filter on my 1.6 Zafira for £32.Having read somewhere that the oil level on Zafira's is quite tricky to get right, i then checked the oil level the next morning, after the car had stood alnight, and the level was nearly 1/2 inch over the top of the high mark.
I took the car back, and they said they would check it out, which they did. They managed to break the filler cap in the meantime, but out driving today, smoke started pouring out of the bonnet and the smell was one of burning. It seems oil has been leaking out of the filler cap, running down the heat shield and onto the exhaust manifold, hence the smoke and smell. The AA patrol man who checked the car for me said that there had been to much oil in the engine, and there was a possibility of damage to the catalytic converter. How can i check for damage, and how should i complain, any advice please. (I feel like getting rid of the car now),i'm really pink fluffy diced off. Read more
The industry can at times 'be difficult'. Think in terms of damange limitation. If you can do an oil change, probably for £20 including a filter you are in control. You can use the best oil and filter and know it is done right. Same for air filter, plugs, gearbox oil etc. Use a garage, probably a good independant, when you have to.
The scenario:
03 reg Vectra (ie still under warranty) rolls away backwards whilst parked on a sloping car park, causing damage to another car.
Handbrake fully on when parked and still on when it had hit the other car.
Handbrake actually had to be released to drive the Vectra away after the accident.
Are Vauxhall liable ??

thought the original problem on the vauxhalls where to do with the gear teeth next to the handbrake didn't mesh fully, ie just the top of the teeth engaged and over time and slight ware the handbrake would fail....they showed this on watchdog at the time...

Is it possible to replace the Run-flat tyres as fitted on most BMW 5 series, with standard tyres, or are the wheel rims different in some way? And if so, does it improve the ride quality on 17in & 18 in wheels?
Have any 5 Series owners any experience of this? Read more
All,
Some advice if possible.
I left my company car park 8pm last night (in my 2001 2.0l Ford Focus with 40k on the clock) with no significant drama but noticed a knock/rub present when moving the steering wheel.
Very concerned I removed the wheel an too my horror I noticed that the front left hand suspension coil had snapped, leaving a considerable sharp point floating very close to the tyre. Fortunately I checked and did not just ignore it, which I was initially inclined to do.
Upon arrival of the RAC I told the guy the problem and he stared at me blankly. He then proceeded to tell me in 15 years experience he had never seen this fault.
? My question is therefore is this as rare as it first seems or is it more common than the mechanic had visibility of?
? Should I have a detailed discussion with my dealer regarding a disappointment that a car less than 4 years old with below average mileage should have such a major failure?
(P.S The vehicle has been religiously serviced at Ford, including its MOT and has had no modifications)

I once had a broken coil on a Renault 18. I changed it myself and never was so scared in all my life! The thing was massive when the tension was off and although I got some decent spring compressors I still felt that the whole caboodle was going to go pop in mid refit and take a limb off - or worse still scratch the paintwork :-)
I guess the chances of a broken spring on the C5 will be pretty low........

Sunday night in Bristol, and I stop at a set of traffic lights!!! Now don't ask me why I did it because I haven't got a clue I just decided to set off I think that the green arrow to turn left came on! I went partway past the left hand turning and stopped as I realised the traffic at the next junction was coming out! I know I was a complete idiot and I deserve everything I get but what is my likely punishment as the traffic lights had a red light camera on them!! One of those digital ones that they have in Bristol. There are 2 lanes of traffic that this camera is monitoring, but I'm pretty sure it didn't flash!!
Help!! Will it be a fixed penalty £60 and 3 points? Read more
On the A6 approaching High Lane is an illuminated sign which lights up when you exceed the 30 mph limit. There are two actually, one at each end of the village. I find them quite useful as I am often a little distracted and forget to come down below 30 mph straight away. That is, they both used to light up, but now only one of them does. The other one looks to be damaged, it looks to me as though it has several bullet holes in it.
I get the impession that someone is miffed at being caught by the Gatso. Also close by is a traffic survey device, a box on the ground chained to a lamp post, with rubber tubes across the road. The tubes had been cut, and remained so for days before they were repaired. The 'young bloods' used to show their contempt for authority by stamping on the brakes whist going over such devices. I think that we lost out on quite a lot of road improvements because of that.
