1997 Ford Fiesta 1.25 with Zetec Engine
My son has just returned from a couple of days away (including motorway journeys ) and says that on several occasions when pulling up to a road junction and putting engine into neutral, the car revs went up to 5k plus.
He reckons that he`s checked to see if the throttle cable etc was jammed , car mat sticking and anything else obvious but has found nothing .
We`ll be looking at it in the morning in the daylight but in the meantime does anyone have any experience of this problem orhave any suggestions?
I`m hoping to find a sticking mechanical problem somewhere that will be cured with a drop of oil but is there anything electronic that might cause this fault?
Thanks Read more
Hi all,
Its my first question on this forum Having been viewing the contents for a few months however.
I wanted to paint my brake calipers on my car (in red).
For the I will need to jack up the car and take of the tyre.
I was wondering is it possible to leave the car on a jack overnight without any damage? the jack is just a standard one that came with the car.
Also this brake caliper paint is a two part paint whereupon you have to mix the paint and hardener. The paint apparently goes rock hard in 20 mins. Any suggestion as to how i can get all 4 calipers done?
Any comments appreciated Read more
What's wrong ?.....Its not Cliff Pope by any chance.
You know the hole through which you pump air into the tyre on your car? Has anyone actually ever had the cap get stuck there? I want to take the cap off so that I can pump some air in since the tyre pressure seems awefully low, but I haven't been able to get it off in 4 days. I did the air about a couple of months ago, so dunno why it ain't coming off. Anything from your vast experiences that can help me?

If they're that stuck, then call in a tyre place and
they'll either get them off for you, or replace the valves
completely.
You really don't want to messa round with it too much
yourself
Bill Payer is right-you have been trying to sort this out for 10 days now and all this time your tyres have been low in pressure (as you say in your first post)

I have a 54 reg Citroen C3 1.4 petrol with just over 10,000 miles.
The oil is now about the minimum mark, so i would like to top it up.
The next (first) service is not due until 20,000 miles or two years so November 2006.
Two questions:
1 - Seeing as the oil level has dropped so low, am i wise to get an oil and filter change done, regardless of Citroen's guidelines.
2 - If i don't get an oil change, i will need to top up the oil. Citroen recommend TOTAL QUARTZ 7000 (10W-40) or TOTAL QUARTZ 9000 (5W-40). What is the difference between 10W-40 and 5W-40, so which one should i go for, and is any other (cheaper) oil appropriate for use e.g. a Castrol or whatever.
I should point i have had no need to add oil to a car for about 12 years, and I just used Castrol GTX.
TIA

At one year and 10k miles, now is the perfect time
for an oil and filter change. With a new car and
engine why scrimp.? Get the fully synthetic. The price difference is
minimal.
Car going in Thursday for an oil change, agree with you that 20,000 is too long, considering it does very short journeys.
Going to need an expert here.
I had to top up the Peugeots coolant. Is normal blue coolant compatible with Peugeot coolant? I haven't got another bottle of Peugeot coolant to compare against, it was all used when the water pump was done with cambelt. I sucked up some with some clear hose and it didn't really have a colour.
It's an HDi, if that makes any difference. Read more

The manual says to take it to a dealer. It's the 1.4 HDI, and the turbo unit is in the way on the drivers side. What's the best way to do this? It's a 2001 model (square not round headlamps). Read more
>Did you have to take the air cleaner box off?>
I think I just took the duct off.. three screws and a tug...
Maybe I am lucky I have small hands.

Went out this morning (-4 + chilly!) and sprayed ...... ice remained. Same happened yesterday. Am using well known shop-brand de-icer. Perhaps it could be because it is left over from last year ...... anyone found a spray de-icer that works really well as I would like to know!?
I never remember having this problem a few years ago - has the formulation been changed recently?
Thanks! Yoby Read more
Yeah - I have the same problem with the wires in the heated screens; I often get distracted by them during the day, and night is much worse.
Warm water defrosts all the windows pretty fast - put the wipers on intermittent before pouring on the windscreen and they wipe the water off, which stops it freezing again.
Apologies if this has been done before.
If fuel additives (redex etc) claim to reduce emissions, will they help on your MOT test at all?? Seems too good to be true to me. It's a 1992 1108cc phase 1 Renault Clio- failed on CO.
Furthermore, it's about the only non-cat clio- the test centre will know this won't they?
Any help appreciated for a new-boy Read more
Fuel cats are snake oil.
Just service the car, new fluids, filters, plugs etc. Try a bit of redex through the carb. Take it for a very long fast blast, get to that red line a few times. Then try again. If it still fails, get it properly tuned. If it still fails, try without the air filter in, this should make it run weak.
As I keep detailed records in a spreadsheet, I can report that since I installed a Kenlowe engine pre-heater in my MB Coupé (3.2 litres), fuel consumption has improved from 25.92 mpg cumulative pre-Kenlowe to 27.96 mpg over the Kenlowe period of 11 months. I have used it throughout the year, except on a handful of occasions. Whether the savings balance out the cost of electricity consumed I don't yet know, but the major benefits are of course the health of the engine and immediate comfort within the car on cold days. The pattern of usage has not changed significantly. Read more

Glad to hear you're still* doing it BM! My supply dried up around Christmas and the Xedos is now punishing me with what appear to be blocked jets! Must get another tin...
*Assuming you still are. I've just realised when you posted it...
Just looking at my options on the company car front...
Spent some time looking at the A4 Avant. When I got to the price list on the Audi site, the car is listed twice:
*Audi A4 Avant 2.0 TDi S Line
*Audi A4 Avant 2.0 TDi TDV S Line
There's no difference in the performance figure or the price - does anyone know what the TDV bit is all about?
Cheers!

I've been looking at the Audi A4 3.0 TDI's for a while and the common theme seems to be that all the TDV versions have 230 BHP instead of the standard 204 BHP, they also have better MPG ratings (more power and better economy!). I think all the 3.0 (both TDI and TDV) diesels have Quattro. Having spoken to an Audi gearbox expert he seemed to think that all TDV tiptronic versions have the ZF gear boxes which don't break down - he said the others especially the CVT versions are in all the time for rebuilds. Therefore I plumped for a used A4 3.0 TDI TDV and it's been great.
Only disconnecting the battery can reset the ECU even then some components might default to on position the only 100% way to reset an ECU is to use the correct computer.
