Apologies if this has been done before.
If fuel additives (redex etc) claim to reduce emissions, will they help on your MOT test at all?? Seems too good to be true to me. It's a 1992 1108cc phase 1 Renault Clio- failed on CO.
Furthermore, it's about the only non-cat clio- the test centre will know this won't they?
Any help appreciated for a new-boy

Possibly, if it's borderline. Could also be a dirty air filter.

It's there job to know. You could always remind them though.

the co machine should be able to tell when the details are put in.
as said check the airfilter and as long as the carb hasnt done 101,000 miles you really shouldnt need an aditive on one of these, could garage not tweak the carb for you?is the choke on slightly and needing adjustement?did they test it as a cat model?because if they did then there is no way a 92 carb would pass

Did you take the car for a good workout (italian tune) before the MOT? It can make all the difference between a pass and a fail.

Don't test it with it otherwise they will pick up all the stuff being cleaned out.
Do it before then run it their on Optimax/ is what I'd do.

Nice one- cheers for the advice all. Will give it a redex/slick 50 system clean, oil change & filter, clean/replace air filter and then filling with optimax and making sure it's all burnt out before the next test.
That said- carb is original and on 107,000 miles so i'm crossing my fingers a little bit here... Is a carb clean worth the hassle?

A few years ago my son had an old Fiat that wasn't doing too well on the emissions. I took off the filter and gently poured some Redex straight into the carb while it was running. A few blips on the gas, the house disappeared in a cloud of white smoke. Having made sure that 'er indoors was suitably ticked off (I shoved some straight into the cylinders to decoke the engine as well), I chucked the rest of the Redex in the tank and took it out for a Roman test drive. A good blast up and down the motorway (doing a mean impression of a Vatican election announcement) and it did the trick. Rumour has it the tester was temporarily blinded by the cleanliness of the carb. Good luck.

A couple of alternatives you may care to try: 1)Fit a fuel cat, which is supposed to stabalise the octane of the substandard fuel we're sold these days, and 2) Fit a "spitfire", which gives multiple sparks per cycle. I don't think it does anything for the performance but it may burn up any unburnt waste.

You should also change the spark plugs. How old are they?

Fuel cats are snake oil.
Just service the car, new fluids, filters, plugs etc. Try a bit of redex through the carb. Take it for a very long fast blast, get to that red line a few times. Then try again. If it still fails, get it properly tuned. If it still fails, try without the air filter in, this should make it run weak.
