Tyre problem - unable to remove dust cap - SkyDragon
You know the hole through which you pump air into the tyre on your car? Has anyone actually ever had the cap get stuck there? I want to take the cap off so that I can pump some air in since the tyre pressure seems awefully low, but I haven't been able to get it off in 4 days. I did the air about a couple of months ago, so dunno why it ain't coming off. Anything from your vast experiences that can help me?

LOL! You mean the valve cap.
Just undo it with a pair of pliers (but don't grip too hard or you'll damage the valve). Replacements are very cheaply available from factors (4 for 90p or such).

That's the problem - I've tried for a few days with pliers, but it's stuck on pretty hard.

Is it a metal cap or the more normal plastic jobbie?

I ask because I had the metal caps on a previous car seize on and in trying to get them off (with a spanner because the heads were hexagonal) I sheared a valve and got an instant flat tyre.

I ended up fitting the spare wheel and driving to my local dealer who gently heated the valves before then easily removing the remaining caps.

I replaced all four with placcy ones!

So how did he gently heat the valves? With a small lighter? Blowtorch (!)? It's been a week now, and still struggling to get them off. Yes, they are metal ones.

If they're that stuck, then call in a tyre place and they'll either get them off for you, or replace the valves completely.

You really don't want to messa round with it too much yourself - you risk pulling the valve out. It'll blow out with some force. If it hit you in the eye you'd be blinded.

Try one pair on the cap and another pair on the body immediately below the cap.

Bill Payer is right-you have been trying to sort this out for 10 days now and all this time your tyres have been low in pressure (as you say in your first post)

It was difficult to see from where I watched but I think a ring spanner was first heated with a blowtorch. Certainly penetrating oil was also used.

Good luck.

I should have added that it could also have been a metal rod that was heated by blowtorch, hence my original comment about heating the valve stems (which were not rubber!). Other than the penetrating oil that I know was used (because I cleaned up the residue) all I know for sure from where I stood is that it involved a blow torch and something metal that was heated with it.

Try boiling water, or a hot air gun rather than a naked flame.
