When I lived in Germany we all had winter tyres and talking to my friend just now over there ,they still use and are strongly advised.
Perhaps in the Uk this should be now considered.
Out of interest i just called a local tyre place and they had never heard of !!!!

Since I picked up the Mondeo saloon a few months back, I'd only seen one other saloon on the road over here. Yet, when I was in Eire last week, nearly every Mondeo was a saloon. Also there were plenty of Avensis saloons too.
Interesting to reflect that fashions in different locations dictate buying habits. I still wonder how many sales the likes of VW miss by not having a hatch version of the Passat. Read more
Won't buy a car without a rear wiper .... try reversing in the dark & wet, it is much easier to see pedestrians, other vehicles etc if the rain has been wiped away; this means much safer reversing. Should be a standard fit on all vehicles - also helps dealing with snow, melted frost, morning dew etc. I once owed a Volvo 360 hatch supplied without a rear wiper. It took months of constant nagging to get the necessary parts shipped over from the factory in Holland and fitted. I cursed every time it rained.
I have just read the HJ review of the new Civic ... amazed they have not included a rear wiper on the hatchback.

Anyway, thread locked.
My girlfriend has a 1 litre S reg Corsa. She's been having trouble with it stalling at junctions. What generally happens is when she dips the clutch the revs drop and keep dropping until it eventually stalls. Either that or the revs drop as low as 400-500 rpm then it realises it's about to stall and wakes up. Poor lass is worried sick ! Read more
my corsa 1.3d for the first 20k would stall so easily if you didnt get it just right, and dont try quick get aways.

Thanks all.
I will be taking the kids to London for a matinee. They've done the Underground a few times, but have never been in a 'proper' taxi. I think we'll give it a go. One way ought to do it!
Hi.A friend of mine has a 04 Passat 2.0L. Tonight is the 4th occasion that the Climate Control has stopped working.Completely dead. Not really sure what the Dealer is doing. He has replaced the fuse (x3) and has "allegedly" replaced some wiring.Possibly related to the stereo in some way as she feels that it seems to happen when using the stereo??? Any pointers at all???? Read more

The wiring to the pressure sensor can sometimes get trapped in the front bumper mounting; if the front bumper has ever been removed, it might be worth a look.
Sorry but there must be 'vanhead' out there who knows something about vans. I need to move house over Christmas and have been offered a 1997 VW LT diesel in white with 105k and with current tax/PSV. I'm told it was used for light duties by one company owner from whom the current owner bought it ... to move house. I know nowt about vans but I'm going to see this one tomorrow? Anything I should know - and is it worth £1500 if in good condition. Cheers Read more
Possibilities of a small profit here.... Arthur Daily look out!
I've got an annoying problem with my '94 Honda Accord 2.0 lsi.
Whenever I start the car first thing or after a reasonable (couple of hours) break, the ABS light goes out immediately, as it should. If I stop the car and turn the ignition off,for a short, few minute period. The ABS light will stay on. If I turn off the ignition (whilst light is out), but only the ignition and not the accessories the light will stay off. This is quite annoying, and very luckily did not occur last week when I had the car M.O.T'd. even when the light is on the brakes work very well and do not lock, even under a real attempt to make them lock.
ANY help or advise would be appreciated.

Check the brake fluid level.Your car may have an Abs system that has 2 brake fluid reservoirs. One on the master cylinder and one on the Abs modulator unit.
Recently my 96 Golf VR6 has been making a few ghostly whirring noises.
Pretty sure it's coming from the back but can't be 100% sure. Also on a couple of occasions i've had to brake sharply and i can feel the pedal juddering so i'm guessing it could be something to do with the brakes.
Somebody i've mentioned it to said it could be a worn / warped brake disc. I had the car serviced in August and they mentioned the discs were a bit worn but wouldn't need to bother getting it replaced as my brake pads were fine so 'no need to bother for another 10,000 miles or so'.
any ideas?
cheers Read more
Glad I could help.
What a journey home I had. It took an hour and a half just to get passed the the first 1km! I needed a small push to get off the car park. Our beloved HR department waited until the local roads were grid locked and dangerous before suggesting mid afternoon that those living further afield might want to make their way home. The local school had already been shut for nearly an hour. It took me 10 to 15 minutes just to get all the snow off the car (about 2 inches at least) A weather warning had been in place for heavy snow since 11am! I blame them for the 2.5 hour journey to get all of a couple of miles.
Watching most people wheel spinning away in the hope that would improve traction was amusing. One poor woman in a merc took 10 minutes of pushing to even get out of the car park..... Several people forgot about the camber so came a cropper and slid into the kerb needlessly. There were a few patches of black ice so seeing several white vans going straight on with their front wheel flailing left and right was a sight to behold.
I tried to test the ABS by getting up to a massive 20 mph and braking firmly and the car made a noise like something fell off into the road....which was slightly alarming.
I just wish I'd brought my wellies as I would have been home in a fifth of the time....
I hope other Backroomers made it home in one piece with no extra dents :-)

>> oh 4x4 bashing - can anyone join in ?
Best car I ever had for snow was a Citroen GS.
Very light, front wheel drive, adjustable suspension and the hand brake
operated on the front wheels so if one wheel spun, you
could stop it with the brake.
My dad will agree with you there. He had one of those many years ago. Once drove home in snow which was so high, the roads were more like tunnels, because it was so deep. Not forgetting the about skinny tyres, they helped too apparently!
>>Great great car, wish I
still had it. Bit tricky to work on and suffered terminal
rot in the end.
My dad would also agree with that too!
