July 2005
I recently invested a lot of money in a newish car and wanted to give it a clean. I had heard from mates that your standard supermarket car wash can damage paintwork. I was told that the coin type that you wash yourself at petrol stations was the best way forward.
I then proceded to do this at a nearby petrol station and all seemed to have gone well until i noticed the next day that there were light scratches all over the car down to the primer in places (assumedly from the hot soap brush).. I plan to try and t-cut them where it is not down to the primer, but need to know what to do next time!
Hand washing is the obvious choice, but you still have the problem of tiny bits of grit that would scratch paint.. Is a karcher jet washer the only answer?
Help!

Ive just had my rear wheel bearing replaced as it was making humming noises. However, its my 3rd wheel bearing (OSR) in 18-20 months.
Could there be an underlying problem?
the first bearing lasted about 16ish months (was very noisy), second one lasted 1 month (noise only heard when car was jacked up and wheel was spun by hand)
Any ideas? Read more
Assuming the disc is not blue due to a sticking calipier and overheating the disc and bearing, I would pop into a look tyre tracking place and have the rear of the car checked out carefully even a 1 thou bend in a stub axle, which I doubt, till show up as either camber or tracking error in theat one wheel. Correct fitting and initial adjustment is important but 1 month to kill a bearing must have been relly overtightened. Good Luck, Come Back. Regards Peter
Why is it when i took my car in yesterday for its MOT which was due begining of August i only got a 12 month ticket.I was expecting 13 months, but due to the test station being compurised i only got 12. Why is this, don't suppose it's got any thing to do with IT and Government. Read more
The actual wording is "not more than one month" before the expiry of the current certificate.
Presumably that can be 28, 29, 30 or 31 days...:-)

I've just noticed that my tyres have the markings "Treadwear 240 Temperature A Traction A". What is the significance (if any) of these markings?

Yes, this is a common fault on early Megane models.I would think the the earth has been lost on the circuit to these 2 functions.Try running an independent earth cable into both motors under plastic air intake cover.

Looking to buy an S/T plate for about 2 grand - probably a 2.0 GLS. They look solid cars for the money, been advised to make sure the cambelt has been changed as it is a very expensive job. Anyone got any views or further tips ?

Yes, but the Mitsubishi one will have been broken by hitting something. The Mondeo one might have fallen off.
I'm wondering whether it's worth trying to sell my old banger's reg no before sending it to the scrappy. The number's nothing very special : E35 ***, though similar numbers are listed by personalised reg websites for around £600 and I was quoted £350 for mine a couple of years ago (they offer to list it at that price, not to buy it themselves.
Question is, what are the chances of selling in a reasonable time at the prices these companies quote?
