Hi
I have a question regarding a recent delivery of a factory ordered van from Ford. The vehicle arrived accepted delivery only to find 2 weeks later that an electric seat pack with curtain airbags that I had specified had not been fitted. I raised this with the dealer and they had contacted the Ford misbuild team however due to the covid19 lockdown there has been no further contact from them. My questions are;... Read more
My astravan MK4 (Z16SE engine) will crank but won't start.
I've confirmed I have spark, fuel, air and that the timing is ok. Compression test showed the following: 175 175 120 160 - the van does have a small coolant leak so maybe has a cracked cylinder head. The head gasket has recently been replaced but didn't solve the leak and was running ok until a few weeks ago.... Read more
Assuming the engine is drawing air, the compressions are good, and the exhaust is clear. If you're sure they all are you'll have eliminated a lot already. Make sure the spark plugs are clean and dry. If they're wet with fuel the engine could be flooding with excess fuel. If they're oil fouled you could have a lot of other problems.
Have you tried a spray of brake cleaner into the air intake? If it starts you'll know the problem is fuel. If it still doesn't then suspect an HT spark fault.

I'm sure Stirling Moss had the greatest respect for John Surtees too - he was the only man to have won world championships on both two and four wheels. He was made CBE but should have had a knighthood.
Recently,I have noticed a strong smell of petrol at the lower back of my car when parked.Thinks! It could be the purge line come off the Evap. canister or a leak in the return fuel line but as there is no evidence of wet fuel,I think the second cause is unlikely. Both these would need the tank dropped to check.Further thinking,All my driving recently has been a one- mile each way journey to a local supermarket. As the canister is only purged when engine is in "closed loop" mode ie.not idle or "WOT",could this be the cause?Any other ideas please? The only fault in the evap system that would illuminate the fault light is control valve failure-all 1.24 Fiesta are two pipe fuel systems.I agree with you on short journeys-one day,we'll get a chance to do long ones again.Purging on "closed loop" means it does not matter if it's air or fuel vapour that's being purged, the control system will compensate.
It says trash on mine. Anyway thanks for posting it, Paul.

Dear SLO76,
I must make clear that I am not a doctor but your symptoms are not dissimilar to a friend who has recently been diagnosed with polymyalgia rheumatica. I suggest you check your symptoms against this condition and also fibromyalgia with "Dr Google"....
Hey guys, have you seen this before? I was driving down the road and my car just died, no warning, no nothing every thing just turned off. Luckily I was able to pull over to a parking space. I checked the battery which had zero voltage so I thought the battery had an internal short. To verify I plugged in a small cheap car just starter which instantly exploded!
I thought that this was just because it was a cheapo jump starter which couldn't handle being plugged into a shorted battery. I took the bus to my local auto place and bought a new battery. As soon as I connected the battery cables to the battery there was a fizzing sound, so I disconnected the cables and checked the voltage on the battery which was previously 12 volts and now zero volts! =/
So I'm thinking that it's not a battery problem... After doing a little research I found that if a diode has failed inside the alternator, the alternator can flood the cars electrical system with alternating current; which is my best guess so far. The alternator was on it's way out any way (I got it from a scrap yard), when I revved hard a warning showed up on the dash "alternator workshop". I checked the alternator a few times when it was running, and when at idle it was fine; so I thought it was just losing a bit of power generating capacity when the car was revved hard so kept using it.
Can any thing else cause the instant death of a battery? Could it be a short in the system? I've ordered a multimeter (lost my last one) to check for AC in the system. If there is AC coming from the alternator how can I get rid of this to make it safe to remove the alternator?
PS. I definitely did not put the battery in backwards.
Thanks!

Is it possible that you had your meter sent to shunt mode (measuring current) and have blown an internal fuse, by having the black lead plugged into the wrong hole when measuring across the battery terminals?
If the meter has fixed leads or only 2 holes then that couldn't happen.

Take for a good drive before you bu. My brother has driven several as loan cars while his older Merc is serviced. He says they're very boring to drive.
hi, thanks for the response. we only received a finance quotation based on the online build configurator that we emailed them. the finance quotation listed the specification that we requested and once we were satisfied we emailed to confirm this. there wasnt an order form as such, however all communication was made via email. the sales agent also recalls ordering this on his system.
my only other theory is if he had genuinely ordered this then there has been a potential mix up with another vehicle. i noticed the manager had ordered an identical vehicle for himself i wonder if its been mixed up. either way its not my responsibility i guess to work out how it went wrong, just whether i am unreasonable to reject and whether i can, or if they can offer a discount?...
