In the current crisis is it dangerous to handwash/clean car exteriors ?

I can't as confined to bedroom,....

If it's your car on your land and no one else has been using it then it's probably ok ?

If it's elsewhere eg parked on the street then I presume you shouldn't be doing it as it's not one of the things you can leave your house/property to do as outlined by the government.

I've been doing all those stay at home jobs - jetwashing under the cars to clear winter mud/salt, especially important with our Panda as it has a few badly designed in mud traps. Also jetwashing the garden, pruning everything in sight, decorating - just about any job that might keep me stuck in the house when this situation is over!

So long as you observe 'social distancing' from anyone not a member of your household, crack on. If you have no off street area and intend washing the car on the road, probably not a good idea.

If you are thinking you might pick up something form the car's exterior, I think the risk must be close to zero after a couple of days, especially if you will be hosing it down first. The only likely spots must be door and boot handles and edges, unless strange behaviour is common in your neighbourhood.

Presumably this is a wind up ?

I'll take the bait cos I am bored what's the perceived problem? I guess inhaling polish fumes could damage your lungs and make you susceptible, Nano tech cleaners could penetrate your skin, legionella could be lingering in your bucket, harmful bacteria lurking in unwashed drying cloths, sunlight reflecting dangerous rays onto your skin and also damaging your eyes.. I am sure far more knowledgeable people than I could add to this list.

I don't think its worth the risk myself

Presumably this is a wind up ?

Why?, seems a sensible enough enquiry.

If you read through the answers given so far, you'll see that folk seem to think it would be fine on your own property, but not if on a public road. Why you can't see the possible problem with this is anyones guess, but here are a couple of pointers.

1, A distance of 2m must be kept between people.

2, Most pavements are less than 2m wide.

3, Folk are being told to stay at home, or at least on their property, unless absolutely neccessary. So it is unlikely that, were you discovered washing your car on a public road by the Police, they'd accept your argument that it was absolutely neccessary to do so.

Nah, probably petrol, or (less likely nowadays) diesel.

<< A distance of 2m must be kept between people. >>

There's nothing magic about 2 metres, it's an arbitrary distance which the decision-makers have come to, somewhere between being well within range and too far away to converse. It's much more important to consider other factors such as (a) what those nearby people are doing (coughing etc) and (b) which way any wind is blowing.

You correctly list valid points (that everyone should know by now) along with the replies of others that should be observed. Where our opinions differ is that I find it hard to believe anyone has to actually rely on this forum to tell them that that they have to keep 2m distance etc Had the original question made reference to any ambiguity regarding these common sense points then I would not think it a wind up. i.e. Could I wash my car in a communal area next to privately owned properties etc etc

Thank you for telling me that A distance of 2m must be kept between people. Like I say I regard this thread as a light hearted wind up take care

Dr youngrovergirls doctors group say 4 metres is far better, but each to their own.

And if anyone wants to wash the birdpoo off the roof of my car, please feel free.

It seems I got it from SWMBO who got it from a patient, before they were issued with any PPE.

Should I wash my car? - Lrac

4m does sound far more sensible than 2m although I have not yet been able to keep even 2m when food shopping.100% . I imagine the advice comes from my local hospital Colchester?

As for your bird poo, the risk of contracting psittacosis must surely mean this is a specialist job requiring bio hazard training.

Get well soon

It's not a wind up. Just concerned about virus in the atmosphere, infected people having touched a vehicle, plus accumulating dust on vehicle . Just a general question.

My wife washes grocery deliveries-she says she doesn't know who has touched them

Should I wash my car? - gordonbennet

It's your choice and yours alone, only you know how seriously you assume the risk to be, and how much trust you have, in what we are being told by the govt and their media chums and the opinion of experts that have the ear of govt.

Note, other experts are available who don't necessarily agree.

Do i wash my cars and vehicles i drive at work, certainly.

Sorry to read you are unwell. I hope you recover soon. When I read you were confined to the bedroom I naturally though nudge, nudge, wink, wink but it appears not. Get that birdpoo washed off before it makes a stain you cannot shift.

Cheers Concrete

Could try wearing rubber gloves to wash the car after spraying the paint work with water. I think she is sensible washing the groceries I saw someone handling packets of meat that were put back because he had picked up more than his allowance.

After listening to all of the advice we are being bombarded with are the Corona Virus, I'd say that as long as you observe social distancing advice, use plenty of soap on car and don't touch your face at any point you'll reduce to risk to very low. In the unlikely event that someone had coughed on your car and left a trace on Covid 19 on it, the soap *should* destroy it. I wouldn't have any qualms about washing my car.

I seem to remember that it is actually illegal to wash your car on a public road - not sure if that is just local bye-law or applies everywhere. Not that it seems to be enforced, cops have better things to do and don't generally want the hassle of paperwork for trivial things.

I would have thought if cars were being washed in the road at this moment in time it would definitely be contravening the current restrictions unless it could be considered as your one daily exercise. Carobics?

<< I would have thought if cars were being washed in the road at this moment in time it would definitely be contravening the current restrictions >>

I would say that within reasonable limits you might do any legal thing in the road, as long as you keep appropriate distance from others. Being able to do that will depend heavily on your locality - and perhaps on the number of local plod or do-gooders.

Should I wash my car? - car_maniac

It shouldn't be dangerous, but if you will contact with other people that could be a problem, so I would avoid those contacts for now, just to be sure.

I'm using self services. I'm cleaning my car 2-3 times per week... it's much cheaper and I like the process :) Even for (link deleted) I'm using special spray to clean them.

Should I wash my car? - Philip Leam

Why not? I can't look at my car when it is dirty. I want to wash it at once. Especially if you have your yard and jet washer. It can take you less than hour to clean it as well as in the nowadays situation you can use disinfectants with a water. I can sugest you looking at Karcher of Niflisk brands that produce the best power washer for cars. I can also say that once you clean your car with pressure washer you will forget aobut washing services.

Thank you, Philip, for your valuable insight. It is useful to know that it takes less than an hour to clean a car. Did you realise it is obvious you were also planting spam?

What a pity. Your post is so helpful.
