Just come across a neighbour who having the engine replaced in a Focus 1.0 Ecoboost. The car has only done 40,000 miles. There seems to have been an engine coolant loss issue.
Anyone else heard of problems like this?... Read more
Hi,
i have a 2009 Mondeo 2.0tdci which is displaying immobiliser active then engine fault. It had been standing for a while and the battery when flat. changed the battery now it won'.t start. Can anyone offer any advise. Read more
This often happens on Porsche models too. I've lost count of the number of flat batteries I've attended at the home address on Porsche's. It seems many of them are only used infrequently, and spend long periods of time sat in the garage, during which time the battery discharges and doesn't recover. The immobiliser system then needs re-synchronising before the engine will start.
Moral of the story. If you have a Porsche and only want to use it on nice sunny days, keep the battery charged.
Hello,
I am considering buying a used high mileage kia ceed / hyundai i30.... Read more
I've got a 57 plate Kia Cee'd 1.6 CRDi and its on 97,000 miles. I've done 20,000 miles in it since I've owned it and so far I've had no issues with it at all. I've not heard anything about turbo issues on them either and besides with the 7 year warranty if anything cropped up during that time then it would've been replaced/fixed.
I've got to admit the Cee'd is one of the best cars I've owned for reliability and has exceeded my expectations having come from 2 very unreliable Mk6 VW Golfs!...
Hi,
I want to buy a used Volvo v70 estate, probably around year 2000-2004ish. I travel about 10,000 miles annually. Should I go for a petrol or diesel? Should I go for manual or auto, I would like an auto as most of my driving is short journeys. Is there anything I should look out for when buying?
My wife says I definitely need parking sensors.
Thanks for any help. Read more
Any thoughts on this one? www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2002-VOLVO-V70-S-20V-AUTO-SILVE...e
Looks OK but if you test drive it make sure that autobox works faultlessly, they can start to play up as they get older.
Also check all electrics as they were weaker on the earlier cars, they can suffer from instrument cluster failure - Volvo improved them and these later cars will have chrome rings around the dials....
Hi there i am looking for some insight on an issue i have with a 2007 407 at the moment. Last week i asked an independent garage to change a timing belt kit (contitech) and timing chain kit (Febi Bilstein) that i sourced myself from a reputable source.
The reason i also wanted to replace the chain is that i felt it was worn, it was probably starting to rub against the casing causing a slight noise over the usual idle sound. ... Read more
Somewhere along the line, the garage has made a massive error. It should not be costing you a penny.I would stand your ground.
I agree. 'idling for an hour.....' - pull the other one! And did it actually need doing? Aren't these 10yrs / 80,000m? - which means the odds of it failing are pretty remote anyway - and if that's just a tiny short chain from one cam to the other any 'stretch' would have an infinitesimal effect....
Just had my 335i seviced at 20k 3.1 yrs old, by a friends garage. He can't access the electronic service history, but has been able to update oil, filters, brake fluid, etc. but not the service history, using 3 different plug in devices. Any ideas, as the BMW agent wants up to £80 just to access the servive history and update !
Have been informed that a local ( non BMW main dealer ) garage has the equipment to update the service history if the service is carried out by them.
So that leaves me with the problem as they arn't prepared to enter the data on behalf of another garage : fair comment.
My new car's odometer reached 998km and a warning light came on. I pulled over and checked the handbook. It said 'get to a main dealer ASAP'. Fortunately I was quite close to one.
On more detailed reading of the warning light(s) it seemed to be a tyre pressure problem. I've just put on my new winter tyres and wheels. "Oh," says Mr. Garage Man "That'll be because you haven't got electronic tyre valves. "So how much to get the warning lights reset?" "Oh, you'll need a set of electronic valves!"... Read more
>I have a feeling that "certain" tyre pressure monitoring systems will in time become an expensive "nuisance" to owners of the older vehicle.
They already are - some of the aluminium valve stems are known to corrode and fracture, leading to sudden total loss of pressure....
I have a 2008 V50 2.0 diesel that has done around 105,000 miles. I have an intermittent problem where when I turn on engine it has low idle and no throttle response. To date the following work has been done to it, first by our local Volvo specialist and more recently by a Volvo dealer: (1) filter changed; (2) excess carbon removed around throttle housing; (3) EGR valve has been replaced. I am told by the Volvo dealer that the diagnostic testing is not showing any codes. Problem still not resolved and it is also throwing out black smoke. Issue tends to resolve itself after a number of attempts are made. I am not at all technically minded and so any suggestions gratefully received. Read more
Solved:Had a similar problem every other day. whilst driving I would lose throttle response, erratic idle and no power and need to hold throttle down and eventually very slowly the rpm comes up and it would suddenly clear and rev up high with a puff of black smoke?? no fault codes.
Removed throttle body and EGR body, but other than needing a clean it did not fix fault. Noted a week later, with the engine cover off, a lot of air was bleeding into and running along through the clear fuel pipe across front of the engine, removed the fuel line quick connect coupler fittings fitted to either side of the filter, cleaned seals inside fitting and re seated filter housing and the screw top valve on top of fuel filter housing, reassembled, used a cheep halfords fuel primer / vacuum pump to assist in getting the pump primed (connected to the return fuel pipe) when it started no air bubbles were seen running along pipe and the fault has not reoccurred after 4 weeks. (must be safe to think it is sorted but it will probably go and play up again tomorrow now i have posted this)
My son has a 1.2 Ambience, new in June 2015. (I think it's a great car).
I didn't realise it had TPMS (I now understand that this is compulsory - the Luddite in me wonders why we need yet something else to go wrong).... Read more
Thanks for the replies.
OK, mea culpa, this has been sorted, having convinced son to RTFM....

What you definitely don't do is slacken an injector pipe on any common rail diesel engine. The operating pressures can get as high as 30,000psi, and so slackening a pipe is potentially dangerous.
What you could do is use a stethoscope placed close to each injector in turn and listen for one that's noisy. You may be able to detect on which cylinder fuel is jetting by the increased noise, assuming of course that an injector is the cause.
Injector cleaner might help, but usually the cause is worn nozzles, not blocked nozzles as does happen with petrol injectors. Common Rail Diesel fuel systems have several injection phases, for pre, main, and post injection. This is why each injector has a code which must be programmed into the ECM so that it knows how to operate each injector correctly. Injectors are very precisely set up, and is certainly not a DIY job. A good diesel specialist will be able to test your injectors for operation and wear, and make sure they're correctly programmed to the ECM.
When I used to sell cars with an RAC warranty back in the 90’s it was a real selling point, it covered everything other than wear and tear items and it had a claims limit up to the value of the car. Sad days that they’re degraded to this level. We had no bother making claims, but our unit cost went through the roof because we made so many of them and thus the firm switched to a lesser known warranty which wasn’t anywhere near as good.
