Esp warning light is on and diagnosis with VCDS shows fault 00493-ESP-Sensor unit (G419): No signal/Communication. I have tried replacing the sensor unit with a refurbished one (10 year guarantee?) as the dealers wanted over £700 for one. Light still on so firm sent another one, still no joy. Not sure if it is the sensor unit as could also be wiring or connectors from brake electronics, abs unit, to esp sensor. Has anybody had this problem and if so how did they resolve it. Many thanks in anticipation. Read more

Thanks for coming back and updating us. Battery acid is a new one on me. Was it a faulty battery or do you think there's a design issue to blame?
My son's 1.4 TSI Scirroco lost power 10 days ago and went into our local garage where it had been serviced recently. It is 4 and half years old with 46.000 miles on the clock. They rang to say that piston number 4 had lost compression and had only 40, whilst 1,2 and 3 had 150. He told us it was a known fault on this engine and advised us to let them take it to the Volkswagen dealership as he suspected there could be engine damage. He said it was a sudden, major fault, definitely not due to wear and tear. It was taken to VW who charged us £60 for a diagnostic check and then asked permission to continue at £105 per hour, which we gave. They let us know that it needed a new engine. They said they would replace the engine, but my son was liable for the labour which would be £3000+! I began researching, as it seems ridiculous that a car with so little mileage as such a major problem and I have found so many. There was even a piece in a car magazine in 2013 saying that it is a known problem. To add insult to injury, our son leases his car and he can return it in September. Neither the lease company or the finance company want to know, so at 20 years old, he is left with an enormous bill!! Volkswagen have dealt with this differently each time, in some cases paying all labour costs as well, even when the car is out of warranty. In all the cases all over the world that I have found, my son seems to be paying the most. This seems so unfair and I would like to hear from anyone who has had this problem or anyone who can help please. Read more
source an engine from a reliable salvage company you could probably buy 3 or 4 for £6500

How can I find out if my engine is affected ?
I have recently bought a 62 plate Astra 1.7 cdti ecoflex (110) Sports Tourer to replace my aging 170,000 mile 1.3 cdti estate. On a 630 mile run to my holiday shack in Brittany, the old 1.3 regularly did 56+ mpg (never quite got 60 though sometimes tantalisingly close!) I foolishly thought the newer 1.7 would do about the same, but last week it did just 46mpg there and back. Thats about 20% worse!
It has the right Michelin energy tyres inflated to higher pressures, driving speed just the same , ie 130kph (80mph) most of the way there once in France, and motorway 210 miles to Dover. The only difference is I used cruise control quite a lot, and the old 1.3 did fail to maintain 130kph up some of the steeper inclines.... Read more
Thanks for all your opinions and responses. Much appreciated, though not always what I wanted to hear!
The figures I quote are accurate brim to brim figures, but relying on the indicated mileage, and calculations at 1 gallon = 4.54 litres. No trip computer on either car....
Could someone please tell me how I can top up the gearbox oil on astra 1.3 2008 6 speed. Reverse is up to the left. Pictures would be helpful.

My clutch was slipping last year when the car was still under warranty, I put it into a vauxhall garage and they could find no fault. I put it in again this year 6 months after warranty expired and I now need a new clutch and DMF. Vauxhall will only pay for part of this as they say it is out of warranty even though I identified the problem before the warranty expired. I'm going to be nearly £600 poorer need some advice on whether I have a case for full payment by vauxhall. Read more
Clutch slip is classed as wear and tear anyway, like brakes and tyres and therefore I doubt would be covered under any warranty.
Surely it can't have been that bad when you first took it in, you managed to get another 6 months out of it....
Hello.

"What is the expected life of modern gearbox?"
No doubt the manufacturer will say it's the life of the car and unfortunately in modern times that's about the age of your car. There is no way you will get any good will from Ford on a car that is 8 years old. You may be better off trading it in for a later model.
Hi all,

If you got the PAS pipes and a new cam belt etc all fitted for just over £300 I would say you did very well indeed. But I actually suspect you got the auxiliary drive belt replaced which is much easier and cheaper to do. Even then £300 does not sound that bad.
I will also suggest you have nothing to worry about with regard to the PAS pipes leaking again. Just consider the originals lasted 9 years, in 9 years time the car will be beer cans. As for being a design fault, design faults don't last 9 years....
Many, many thanks for all your replies.
The steering angle is within limits....
