Hey folks,

Could someone please clarifiy what the interval is for a timing belt change on a VW Polo 1.4 SE? My partner is looking to buy one used on a 2005 plate which last had its timing belt done at 40,000 miles. The car's now done 80,000 miles and I'm worried it may be due again immintently. Is this the case?... Read more

I tried posting earlier, this only started happening about 2 weeks ago with the snow, it hasn't happened in cold days before. I have a petrol manual 2016 BMW. Do you need to press start engine while depressing clutch, do you need to keep button down for 20 seconds, leave for 20 seconds and start again?

I just took me 5 times to do this, once it said Engine already on when I press the start but it wasn't on, then the yellow ECU energy warning light stayed on, but then it disappeared once I finally got to start it properly....

Took delivery of a new Hyundai i40 last year. Not purchased, just leased as a company car. Almost 12 months old now but already covered nearly 30,000 miles mainly motorway.

I have concerns with the gearbox and clutch. When the mornings are very cold and icy the gearbox is very stiff, although when the engine reaches operating temperature this improves.Occasionally from a start it is difficult to select first gear. You also have to push the clutch right down into the floor to change through the gearbox. These problems seem to be getting worse now. A colleague who has the same car has had the same and took his to the local dealer in Leeds. They acknowledged that there was an issue and said they could do a temporary fix on the clutch until Hyundai can resolve this long term. He would receive a recall on the vehicle.

I contacted my local dealer in Stourbridge who were very helpful but were not aware of this temporary fix and I have booked the car in for further investigation. Out of curiosity I called Hyundai customer service who are not aware of this problem. Looking on various websites these appear to be common issues with this car yet Hyundai don't seem to want to acknowledge this unless you are lucky.

Anyone had the same problems or is anyone from Hyundai reading this that may like to comment ?

Ahhh... this all brings back such happy memories of doing battles with Hyundai's "Customer Service".

Hi, looking for the next 3-4 year old car. Just wondering what engine is the best for reliabilty or are they both the same. It seems like the 1.6L suffers injector and egr problems but you don't hear so much about the 2.0L. Is this because there is less 2.0L models around. Sparky100. Read more

I have 61 plate Skoda Octavia with 1.6TDI CR. I bought it when it was 10 month old. It has been looked after well and maintained in line with Skoda Service Plan. It recently started to lose coolant water when it passed 60k. My journey isn't short/cold start. 50 Miles commute x 5 per week. I don't know if this is a small fix or big fix. I am in the process of getting rid of it. I don't know my experience is an isolated one or not.

The last few cars I've been responsible for didn't use any oil between services, to the extent that I didn't have any in the garage.

My latest car is a Hyundai Santa Fe auto from 2011. For the first 24,000 miles it didn't use oil, but from the 24k service its started to use it. Its now used 5 litres so is using a litre of oil every 7,000 miles.

I have asked the garage about this, especially as it started at a service, and I've been told that anything below 1 litre per 1,000 miles is normal.

At the same time, my wife's Alfa Guiletta hasn't used a drop in 20,000 miles.

Should modern cars use oil?
Should I be concerned by my Santa Fe?

cheers

None of the five PSA diesels that have gone through my family fleet since 1993 used significant amounts between services. Even the 205 that was letting it go down the valve stems and smoking noticeably used barely a litre over 6k miles between changes.

New cars need watching though. The Xantia went from dipstick max to dipstick min between delivery new in October and a pre Xmas jaunt to France. Once topped up it stabilised and only 'used' again right at end of it's life when there was a leak from rocker gasket into timing belt.

"....what i am really wondering is if the car had defective tyres or brakes (and i honestly dont know one way or the other)."

I think the police officer will have been unimpressed if you really claimed not to know that your tyres and brakes were defective.

Hi, ive had recurrent issues where the battery drains after a few days of not driving. I haven't driven the car since 6am yesterday and cant remember if I locked the car. This evening, the battery was dead again but when I got into the car, it sounded like it was trying to auto lock. Could this drain the battery? As you can tell, I'm not technical at all and I would really appreciate any help. The battery was replaced a few months ago Read more

Thank you all for coming back to me. An autospark checked it a few months ago and couldn't see anything wrong, that was when the new battery was fitted. I'm hoping that I didn't lock the car and it was some sort of auto locking function. When I was in it, it did sound like it was trying to lock. Do any of you kmow if it would be very expensive to bring to Ford for a diagnostic check?

I'm looking to get rid of my 2005 c220 coupe mainly due to its poor economy. Whilst looking around a car supermarket my eye was taken by a Citroen DS3. I have always been very anti French cars but this car was stunning so I decided to have a test drive. The 1.6 diesel 110bhp drove like a dream. Now I'm very tempted to buy it once my merc is sold, has anyone got any experience of these?

Do they have any common faults?
