Hi, looking for the next 3-4 year old car. Just wondering what engine is the best for reliabilty or are they both the same. It seems like the 1.6L suffers injector and egr problems but you don't hear so much about the 2.0L. Is this because there is less 2.0L models around. Sparky100.

Don't buy a white 10 plate GTD in the next few weeks whatever you do, EGR of cheese gone so instead of repair my mate has replaced it with, yes you guessed it, another brand new Golf GTi Diesel.

My head hurts where i've been bashing it on the k****** (oh for goodness sake, the room where SWMBO makes wondrous goodies hence my girth) door frame.

Don't buy either, unless you are convinced it is the only car you'll consider. In which case, it's your choice and I wish you the best. There are much more reliable alternatives around.

We've had a 61 plate 2.0 TDi Bluemotion Tech from new. Was initially a company car and we bought it when I left the company. It was about 7 months old at the time.

It's done 61,000 miles and has been 100% reliable. Average MPG over that period has been just shy of 60 mpg. Pretty much any motorway run at legal speeds sees the MPG in the 60s. Not sure the 1.6 would do any better re economy and the perceived wisdom is that the smaller engine is more trouble. It also only gets a 5 speed 'box, which I suspect means that the 2.0 (with 6 gears) probably uses less juice on the motorway.

Annual mileage is lower now and would probably warrant switching back to petrol next time, but it still gets a decent run each week, which prevents DPF issues.

I'd go for the 2.0 over the 1.6.

SWMBO is on her 7th Golf diesel, initially 1.9's then she had a 2.0 followed by the last couple being 1.6's. All have been completely and utterly reliable. I have had 2 Passats (2.0 diesels) - again both reliable and not a single problem. The last one I changed jobs and was doing short journeys in it for a long time without a hint of the much maligned DPF problem.

I personally don't believe that VW are any better or worse than other manufacturers and that's based on my personal experience. However there appear to be a body of people on here and elsewhere that tell you VW diesels are trouble.

The 2.0 common rail diesel is by all accounts reliable.

The 2.0 pd had many problems.

The 1.9's all seem to be good reliable engines apart from some pd 105's that had a nasty habit of putting a con rod through the block.

You just need to choose carefully, and do your research.

Ive had a number of friends with DPF's in Audi A4 2.0 and Golf having issues. One solution is to drill larger holes in the filters. I suspect that that the 1.6 has more DPF filters issues on the basis it driven harder.

I would not recommend 1.6TDI CR….especially after 60k Miles.

Check out the owners forum.

I have had it mentioned by the local taxi firm, when there 1.6 diesel VAGS in any VAG vehicle get to 90,000 miles they are gotten rid off.

90,000 miles seems to be when they start costing alot of mney to keep on the road.

Worth pointing out a taxi will do 90k in a shorter time period than the average user but will also drive it harder with more start/stops/manouvering than an equivalent high mileage driver.

I have 61 plate Skoda Octavia with 1.6TDI CR. I bought it when it was 10 month old. It has been looked after well and maintained in line with Skoda Service Plan. It recently started to lose coolant water when it passed 60k. My journey isn't short/cold start. 50 Miles commute x 5 per week. I don't know if this is a small fix or big fix. I am in the process of getting rid of it. I don't know my experience is an isolated one or not.
