In 40 years of motoring and access to the Millbrook trade days to trial all models over the last 20 years I have ome to the conclusion that the 1.9 TDI PD engine takes some beating.
Low end torque , turbo kicks in at 2000 revs and unbelievable fuel economy I have yet to find a better combination of useable power and economy.... Read more
the nearby fuel station doesnt have an air machine so for a while I carried a 12v compressor in the boot which I used to top up the tyre pressures. It failed last summer, irritating but was a cheapo job and I wasn't surprised. I inherited another compressor from an elderly relative - much more solid looking and german made. It failed after about three months. Both times the pump started to make unpleaseant grinding sounds and then the internals broke up. Decided to go old school and get a footpump. Halfords job first time, broke after about three months, the pistons seemed to grind against the housing and the pump wouldnt hold pressure. Got a refund. I then invested in a Michelin footpump -all that history or tyres and pneumatics - can't go wrong, I thought. It failed today, the pedal broke away from the body when some rivets failed, as it did the loaded pedal rebound spring ejected sending one of rivets into my face. Nice.
Does anyone know of a manufactuer who makes either a compressor or pump which can be expected to actually do the job it was built to do? Do I ask too much!?... Read more
I had two good footpumps that lasted for about 20 years. One was bought in the thrilling rush of newness that accompanied the passing of my test and the purchase of my first car, the second because being a bit OCD, I like to have two of everything in case one breaks down. Perhaps they lasted longer because each had only had half the usual useage. Nowadays I use a Ring 12v which is quietly efficient, though the air hose has an annoying and permanent kink. I bought a second 12v (not Ring) from Weebay for the reasons outlined above, but it was so horrendously noisy that I put it in a cupboard for a year and then threw it away.
I wasn't aware that you could still buy footpumps, but good luck in your search. Not only simple to operate but good exercise!
Hi, My wife and I bought a used LR D4 at the end on January - diesel, manual and about 83,000 miles. 3/4 weeks ago the Restricted Performance light came on. We have taken it to the local LR dealership and who thought it could be related to the fuel filter or moisture in the fuse box as a seal had broken, both where fixed. circa 350 miles later it happened again. This time the dealership have replaced the "fuel rail pressure", but it has happened again. One question the LR garage keep asking is has the car ever been misfuelled? - Not in our ownership of the last 9 months or so and hitherto we have had 5,000 miles or so of completely untroubled motoring - never misfired our even the suggestion of such. The six month RAC warranty we had when we acquired it has expired, but that aside we find it baffling that the LR garage keep suggesting it has been misfuelled given its performance over the last 9 months. We dread to think of what the cost might be to replace any parts owing to misfuelling - one hears of horror stories! and we would expect this will be unnecessary cost in any event. Is there anything else you could expect to be - the RAC man who towed me in suggested the ERG valves or the turbo pipes - but the engine does not make any bad sounds etc. We look forward to hearing from you. Do you have the service history from previous owners ?
Was it serviced by LR ? Do they KNOW it was mis-fuelled because it's on their service records ?...

I would recommend getting the work done now.
As 'Big John' has said, get the tensioners / rollers and waterpump changed at the same time.
last week, halfway through France on our way to Charente and the wife's Outlander lost power on an incline, it lost speed and would have come to a complete halt had I not turned off and on again, at which point it recovered. In in my attempts I also placed in neutral and blipped the throttle which caused the revs to rise, so the engine was running just wouldn't deliver power. This happened two further times within an hour or so of the first incident, each time on an incline when applying a bit more throttle to maintain speed, each time before coming to a halt I restarted the engine and it carried on. On the third time the engine fault light appeared and remained on. We stopped for lunch, I filled up and we decided to see if we could make it to our destination which we did. And for the rest of the holiday, and the entire drive home it didn't recur. And the fault light cleared.
it's due a service in a month or two, so I can ask them to check the fault code. It seemed to me possibly fuel starvation, I wonder if I had a blockage which cleared. Also the car is used by my wife as a local runabout, I should the think the 1000 miles of peage may have done it some good and given it a good clear out. ... Read more
Yeah, my failure occured at around 26k miles, just after I bought it.
Previously it was a Motability car, and had hardly done anything for the first 3 years of it's life.
Problematic semi auto mastic gearbox, car juddering when in first gear.
Had the gearbox actuator removed , brushes reamed out, and unit lubricated and refitted.
Since then, no juddering but now the gearbox has a mind of its own! When going from 1st to 2nd gear, there is a loss of power for 3/4 seconds and then 2nd gear is selected. This happens about 60% of the time. Occasionally does it in other gears. When you stop, display on dashboard sometimes goes blank. Coming down the box is perfect.
Feels as If there is a delay in a sensor /relay etc, but at a loss now what to do. Read more
I certainly have Galileo, one of the best lorry engines ever made IMO, million miles easily attained with just regular servicing, tappets adjusted and injectors torqued up, then made to work.
The company I worked for was bought by Cummins in 1972, I had the pleasure of visiting several of their engine plants here and in the US and on one trip to the States spent a few days in Columbus at the HQ, about a dozen test beds in the basement if I recall correctly. Reliabilty and durability were given a lot of attention....
i am considering buying a 2011 Nissan Qashqai Tekna 2.0 petrol automatic.
the listing says that the car has " a seamless japanese auto box". what gearbox would this be? were there any problems with this box? Read more
I agree with GB, although I'd add the word 'petrol' to "MB's feel different but the engine noise is well insulated)".
I am looking to buy a new car (supermini class) and I don`t want one with a start-stop system.
Is it possible to buy new cars without this function? Read more
Whereas this is, of course, one of the main features of the Yaris hybrid, together with 8+ million other Toyota hybrids. The engine is stop/starting constantly at all speeds, and you're not aware of it.
Hi all,
My father has recently upgraded his car to a new Octavia.
As a consequence he’s offered me his 2006 Mazda 6 TS 2.0 Estate. It’s done around 110k miles, but otherwise seems pretty sound (fully serviced, and has never failed an MOT). He’s asking for £1,200 which seems pretty reasonable to me.
The only issue with it is that around 18 months ago he had a few issues with the Diesel Particulate Filter, after the warning light reared its’ ugly head. He had it cleared out at the time by a mechanic who ran the car at 3000 rpm for a few hours (I think they call this process a regeneration).
Since then he’s resisted the urge to touch 6th gear and all has been relatively fine. However about a month or so ago the light came back on again, so he had it regenned again to clear out the soot by my brother-in-law who happens to be a Mazda mechanic. He’s now decided to offload the car (hence the new Octavia).
Unfortunately though, I took it for a spin on Saturday not realising the DPF issue (drove it in 6th for 40 miles or so) and the blessed thing dropped into limp mode on me on the M5. That being, a sudden loss of acceleration that forced me from the outside lane in 6th gear at around 75mph, to the hard shoulder in 3rd at less than 30mph within a few nerve-shattering miles. I managed to recover the speed up to about 45-50 and made a quick exit from the motorway. The DPF light is now flashing, and the engine management light is also now on solidly.
My question is really; what’s the best thing to do here?
Should I;
- avoid the car like the plague
- get it regenned again and then avoid 6th gear, hoping for another 18 months before needing it regenned again
- replace the DPF with official parts – looks like this’ll be about £1,600 to sort
- remove the DPF – it’s a 2006 model, so I’m not sure if it actually needs it, there's potentially also MOT issues that we could run into down the line
- get the DPF properly cleaned out – there’s a chap near Avonmouth who offers this service but I’m not sure whether this is guaranteed to sort resolve the DPF issue?
We really like the car, but I don't want (nor can we afford) to keep having to service the DPF. If there's a fix out there that'll cost less than a grand to resolve this completely (meaning I can use 6th gear again!), then we'll go for it. Otherwise, I guess we'll put the money towards something else.... Read more
I have carried out a huge amount of DPF regens on these mazda's.
A you need dedicated diag equipment...
One of our previous cars, a VW Touran, had the 1.9 PD engine. It was an excellent engine. The only problem it had was when the electronics for one of the injectors failed, causing a misfire.
