Hello. I was wondering if you might be able to confirm what the ford technician told me.

I have a 2010 3.5 tonne hi roof ford transit which has developed a worrying symptom. While heavy and trying to slow from motorway speeds, the brake pedal slowly travels down to the buklhead. This takes around 5-10 seconds and when the pedal is released, it resumes braking again. It still moves slowly down. ... Read more

I've just seen this old post while looking for a solution to a brake problem. I have a 2010 transit flat bed in that does exactly the same thing as this, but thats after I've fitted a new master cylinder as i was sure that was at fault. No leaks, pedel sinks while engine is running and not when engine is off, no fluid loss from res. Any ideas ??

About a month ago the engine on my 4 year old Skoda Octavia 1.8 TSI suffered a catastrophic failure (the car had done 40000 miles. the reason, 'the timing chain slipped', the cause, no idea said the garage.

Could it happen again I asked, maybe said the garage! A bit of research on line and a chat with the AA and it appears it's a known problem with 1.8 and 2.0 litre engines. A known issue that SKODA do nothing about.... Read more

I think for a car that's over six years old, 70% is not too bad. I'm not defending Skoda but remember that most cars of this age have had at least two owners, any of whom may have driven the car with a lack of 'car sympathy' (there are lots of ways of doing that, revving the nuts off it being only one).

I'm not suggesting for a moment that you yourself have done that, but have you had the car from new? But you can understand that manufacturers can't go on making unlimited goodwill payments: some wouldn't have given you the 70%. You'd have been lucky to get anything at all out of Ford, for example, from what people have said on this forum....

Driving to work this morning, going round a roundabout, perhaps 30 mph, turned left to exit and completely lost control of the car which did a 360 degree spin, coming to a halt on the grass verge. Quite how I did not hit another vehicle or a lamppost I do not know. Anyway, the car is fine, albeit covered in grass clippings. I rang the local police, and they will check the road surface for oil etc.

Any suggestions? The tyres are Khumo 7's, all new 1 month ago. I was driving as per usual. Could this be an issue with the car steering? Or the tyres? (Fakes maybe? There are three deep grooves running round the tyres, and side 'slots' which looks rather shallow.) A colleague mentioned leaves on the road caused him to do the same once. I will watch my dashcam video when I can to check my driving, and see anything obvious on the road. Read more

>IMHO lift-off oversteer caused by over inflated tyres and slippery conditions. Over >inflated tyres will stay stone cold in those conditions.

Exactly what i was think when i commented earlier. The OP suggests this is his normal style of driving, which for me is quite worrying...

Does anyone know how the new generation of small petrol engines will last? will they still be going without trouble at 150,000 miles plus. I am thinking of cars such as the Focus/Fiesta with the 1.0 litre turbo or a Fiat 500 with less than 1000cc. Surely they must be stressed more than the old conventional type of petrol engine. I have been keeping my cars for over 100,000 miles and was thinking that my next car could be a small eco boost type if they last that long. Read more

Didn't spot that this was a spam resurrection of an old thread. But I don't think we're nearer an answer.

The original thread was pre dieselgate - How times have changed! Small cc petrol engine becoming popular. Re longevity - can't comment too much myself as I've only done 62,000 miles in my 14 plate 1.4tsi Superb - however thus far it has been faultless , very economical (my overall real life average is 45.8mpg) and doesn't need topping up with oil between it's 10,000 mile services....

I saw this article www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/couple-face-1000-fin...6

I don't quite understand this. Surely double yellow lines don't apply to private property? I've seen a lot of properties in the area where I live that have double yellow lines across their driveways with dropped kerbs. If the article is true then there will be hundreds or thousands of people breaking the law in my town. Read more

Firstly, it is "kerb", not "curb" - perhaps curb the carp?

Our American readers might take issue with you on this. Anyway, it doesn't advance the argument much, does it?

I have power loss problems and poor fuel consumption. Initially, on cold mornings starting was difficult - as if the heater plugs were dead. Once started it seemed to run quite well. Consumption soon dropped from 50mpg to 46mpg. Then it developed very intermittent but significant power loss. Mileage is now 97000.

It hasn't been right since a short while after a service, which apparently included fuel, oil and air filter changes. My regular garage changed the heater plugs. Two were dead. It gave a minimal improvement to starting and once running it was just the same as before. It went for another service and I said it was still a problem. They couldn't find anything and suggested waiting for a fault code to occur. Then it fairly suddenly started producing smoke, had less power and it indicated a fault. The garage said it was the EGR valve and replaced it. The smoke stopped but it still lacked power and consumption was still poor - Based on very few miles since the EGR valve change, I get 45 or so mpg when I try very hard for economy, but I know it should do 55-60mpg when driven that way. I see as little as 20+mpg if I try to drive it moderately hard in town, but with the chronic performance it accelerates slowly. On a cooler morning it still has the starting problem. After the service the garage had said that the engine was quite dirty and suggested a Terraclean. They also suggested Japanese cars are not the best for Diesels. So I had it cleaned. Maybe it runs more smoothly, maybe I am imagining that it runs smoothly, but apart from that it is no better at all. It has been parked-up since I got back from the terraclean on Monday and I'm using the bike.... Read more

On this model theres a exhaust gas cooling solenoid control which needs to be checked out has it got its 12v supply & is being activated by the ecu. Theres also a egr valve with built in potentimeter (position sensor) the plug on the egr valve has 5 terminals 1x 12v feed & 1x 5v feed. The 5 wires on this plug go to the ecu corresponding pin no's. I'm just wondering what checks the garage done before fitting new egr valve Regards Micky-Bo

Hi all, I have been told that my drivers front side coil spring has cracked and needs replacing. The garage has said I should replace both along with stabiliser link, geometry check and labour. They have quoted me

Coil Spring (single) x 2
Stabiliser link x 2
Geometry check and front toe adjustment
Labour hours x 1
Cost £245

Does anyone know if this is a good price? (I think it is)
Should I have them both done?

Thanks in advance

I sometimes replace both but usually only if they look in poor condition, and only because it will save the owner coming back for the 2nd one at a later date, and I always explain the reasoning to the customer and let them make the decision.

The safety argument for replacing both is nonsense, completely....

Hi - Help please, daughters Fiat 500 drivers seat tilt mechanism has failed the plastic handle one pulls by the headrest has not broken and functions it is the wire with the round ball at the end has become detached for some reason and there is no obvious way to resolve, contacted Haynes to ask if their manual covers this, Quote, "The Fiat 500 & Panda Manual 5558 covers removal of the driver’s seat but does not include any information on dismantling the seat for access to the tilt mechanism. Sorry but we do not currently have any information on this subject" Unquote. Any ideas please. Thank you.

My air conditioning (climatronic) has just been checked/ serviced, for the first time, at a local specialist for £49.95. I watched the whole process. 335g out of 525g of refrigerant remained after 6 years and 80000 miles. I thought 6 years was long enough- although the system was still functioning.

The temperature at a dashboard vent was tested. Before service 6.5C and after 4.9C running flat out in the manual mode. I normally run in AUTO so I don't demand chilled air just the regulated 21C or so cab temperature which is fine for me. Unless the car mists up or deicing when the manual over ride is needed.... A scroll compressor consumes somewhere between 1 and 3 kW in typical use (1.3 to 4 hp) so a barely noticeable increase, and assuming some degree of capacity control, the system won't be actively compressing all of that time.

Hi all,

Completely new to this but desperate to find out what is wrong with my car. I recently purchased a second hand Golf 1.4 TSi 59 plate from a dealership. There have been numerous issues from day one but one particular ongoing problem which at the moment they are telling me is fine.... Read more

Well I'm trying to get a refund or get them to by it back off me because its been a nightmare start to finish and has spent more time in their garage than it has with me! Not hopeful about a refund but I feel like they should have the problem not someone else. I went to a VW dealer thinking I would get good after sales service.......not the case at all and whilst I have a comprehensive warrenty I can't actually take it to another VW garage for a second opinion, it has to go to back to them.
