We are thinking about buying a new car. So far shortlisted a volvo v60, merc b class and honda civic (thanks in part to these forums). My wife is French and typically we go over to France a couple of times a year. I seem to remember reading that some cars have a switch that modifies the angle of the headlight beam. Is this right or is this something I dreamt? If such a scheme does exist which cars offer this?

My Meriva is running absolutely fine but the car with spanner light keeps lighting up on dashboard.
Recently had a service and the garage read stored codes: P1112 and P1116... Read more
Spanner light is definitely engine issues, there is a separate emissions light (engine symbol), plus some variation between engines.
If the light comes up when driving, then the fault has appeared. If the light stays on when ignition is on (doesn't clear after a few seconds) then a code is stored.
You don't mention age or engine??
1999, V reg 206 had a new cambelt at 60,000 miles 8 years ago. Now done 110,000 miles. I think the recommendation is 8 years or 80,000miles Would you chance another year or replace the belt? Read more
If it works, don't mend it.
= fix it when it fails. That is one approach, and presumably very economical as long as nothing does. Unfortunately that can be both expensive and inconvenient. But in bangernomics terms, it's right on.
Hi all
I own a 2008 Ford Focus Zetec 1.6 Petrol. Couple of days ago the battery on it went flat. I called up AA guys for a jumpstart (and to establish the reason behind battery dying all of a sudden). ... Read more

My Hyundai i30 has suffered a complete failure in the power steering department and apparently needs a new steering column. Although the car is a 2009 model it's only done 20,000 miles!
On reading reviews on this site I found that 'a few cases of power steering failure' had been reported. The review was dated 2013 and I'm wondering where I might find any further up to day info.? Maybe a lot more owners have experienced this problem in the last couple of years?
I've pleaded with Hyundai to contribute to the repair - due to low mileage and only just being out of Warranty but not holding out much hope. They are 'opening a case'
The problem is due to a break in communication involving a microchip in the steering column.
Dealer has offered me £3k trade in - which is more or less what I still owe on finance!
The job is going to cost around £1400, which I can't afford. Any suggestions please where I might find further evidence to support my case that Hyundai should contribute?
Thanks,

I had my i30 fixed for free about 2 months ago and although I wasn't aware of a recall, it was done for free, not under any warranty. Sadly today the same fault occurred, dangerous when the steering wheel is virtually wrenched from your control. More inconvenience as I can't drive it to the garage and I'm without a car.
Hi
I'm thinking of buying a Jaguar xf 3.0d but I've heard that the servicing costs are horrendous.... Read more
To answer the OP's quest the 3.0d are fine and no big DPF issues like VW etc. Not to say like any diesel car i would get it checked first. Suspension problems are common and very costly, so make you ge it checked before purchasing
Service is much the same as BMW/Merc dealer £300 per go. Scare stories are more about pertrol that you be charged £300 for new plug alone!...
Hi...my car is driving me maaaaad.......... i have had a problem with starting the car,the engine turns over but will not start, the eng management light comes on along with the STOP and glowplug light.....the wierd thing is that if i jumpstert the car it starts immediately/....i have tried 2 different batteries on the car but the same results??????? i have had a loud squeal from (i think) the alternator on start up which subsides after a few minutes,i suspect its coming from the alternator...(pulley??)
i keep thinking ...replace the alternator......replace the battery......ive searched the t'internet and read that people spend 100s of £££££ replacing this and that.............. the car cost me 400 quid so i aint chucking loads at it.....please...SOMEONE out there MUST have had a similar problem.....i have got a feeling it's summat really simple like a bad earth????? HEEEEELP!! Read more
Thanks for your reply........i have just read about some people having similar problems with their Quashi and their codes point to the fuel regulator sensor...... would that be a possibility with mine??? i am saying that because i did enquire about replacing mine and could get hold of a 2nd hand one for £20...............?????

Have a Yaris Hsd and looking to replace. Do 20k a year on my own cash. It must be no more than 4m long..exactly. Economical comfy and have sat navigation ,decent stereo and be reasonably roomy. I like my comfort. Probably another Yaris HSD I suppose. Any alternatives though? Read more
The new Twingo fits the bill, or the smart forfour version. smart is more expensive, but you get more for your money, including better sound proofing which in a small car for 20,000 a year is a definate requirement. Interior room is excellent.
Hi,
What's the best course of action.......
A while ago my car had water leak into the wiring loom. Ford replaced this and all was well other than a brake light which sometimes worked and sometimes did not. However in the recent hot spell I noticed that my Air Con wasn't working. I was going to drop it into the ford dealership this week, but the car pre-emped this. This morning I was about to set off.....on my first day of a new job and started the car. There was no power steering. After checking under the bonnet I could see the wheels where the belt should have been and the belt at the bottom of my car. Yesterday I drove it the 200+ miles back home from edinburgh - the car worked fine. No odd noises etc but I did notice an odd burning smell when I pulled into the services. Then as I got home I filled it up with fuel. When I started it, there was an odd whirring noise.
Hopefully tis is just a case of a fan belt failing, but my mechanical knowledge is not great! Unfortunately the dealers are on the other side of Manchester to where the car is broken down. Its done 52,000 miles - pretty much all motorway based.
Any advice is greatly appreciated. Read more
What you have been told by the local garage does make sense but ask for the old unit to be left in the boot and then you can check it for yourself or better still go and look at it before the work is started.
I would have thought that a belt travelling over a siezed pulley at speed would have made it's distress obvious with noise, smoke and smell.
I've seen it on the Peugeot forum they are for 407 SW or the for door model I dont have red box and my seal is with special screws not rubber, I even uploaded a video and pictures on the Forum, but no success. im thinking as its the latest model maybe it has settings in the OBD2 but I doubt it. Thanks just the same. NB
