Two questions really. Central heating side works perfectly but DHW is playing up.Sometimes tank gets hot, other times I have to switch the pump on and off until I hear a 'wooshing' noise and then the sound of water running throught the pipes. DHW then operates OK for couple of days. On my last trip into the loft I noticed the header tank was filled with hot water, so I obviously have a feedover. I've checked the 3port valve and actuator and they work OK and I've just used system cleaner and flushed out, but problem with DHW persists. Second query may be related. If I concentrate, I can hear the pump humming (don't recognise the tune), but SWMBO says she hears it all the time and its driving her, and she me, crazy. Hope someone can give me some new ideas to identify problem(s). Read more

There used to be a website where you whistled or hummed down you computer's microphone and the website identified it.

I have a question too - how can anyone confuse Popcorn with anything Beethoven wrote ??

The two front tyres on my Golf 1.6SE are due to be replaced, what tyres do other Golf owners use and what do they think? On the car at the moment are Dunlop SP9E 91T 195/65/15. I am thinking about Vredestein Sportrac 2 of the same size, any views on these? they won the Autoexpress best buy tyre test last year.I have managed to get a price of £63.45 each fitted, is this a good price? Thank you. Read more

I was amazed to see that a friend's brand new VW van had got Hankock tyres fitted. There is no way that I would have cheapo tyres on a new vehicle, and if I bought a used car with cheapo tyres, I would change them.

I have never had Vredestein tyres on a car, but have them on two grain trailors, and they seem OK.

I got into the car last night, turned on the lights, and both main beams came on for a split second before cutting out, never to return.

Thank god for the (previously unused) front fog lights!

Not sure if its a related problem, but about a month ago one of the front indicators stopped working (the indicators flash twice as quickly to inform you of a fault). I checked the passenger side indicator and sure enough it wasn't working. I assumed the bulb had gone but two days later it was working again, and has stayed working since.

Is it likely that both bulbs have blown at the same time, or will it be something else (fuse maybe?).

Are you certain both "dipped" beam bulbs were working beforehand? One *might* have blown some time ago but you hadn't noticed, so when the other one went, could it be that you assumed both have blown at the same time?

Hi Roomers....

My insurance is up for renewal next month, after getting about 20 or so quotes, the cheapest premium ive been quoted was by Churchill. Has anyone any good/bad dealings with them?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Cheers

"Funny that, churchill, tesco and direct line are all the same company." Didn't know that !
I was intrigued to find the Churchill gave me a cheaper premium for a husband and and wife joint policy. I got mine through the AA too.
I'm trying Saga this time because they were cheaper and had pursued me for a number of years. You know, Aga, Saga, gaga!

My neighbour visited the Churchill repairs garage regularly. He had an arrangement to buy their Discoverys and trailers when they replaced them with purpose built car transporters. The transporters had to be individually made and he had to wait until one was delivered before his Disco became redundant. He pitched up on the day, but the transporter had been stolen out of the locked up workshop the previous night. The tracker transponder which had been fitted was lying on the ground where the vehicle had been.

My Mum has a Mark 4 VW Golf 1.4i the car has just passed 4 years old and has 46000 miles on the clock. The engine is still on its orginal timing belt I am wonder at what point it is recommended the belt is changed? Speaking to VW they say they check the condition of the belt when it is serviced and recommend changing when they think its needed - I am not convinced My aunt had the belt snap on her Golf (full VW main dealer history)causing major (and expensive) engine damage.

I guess that due to tha age of the car it maybe well worth moving away from VW for service and use a local specilist?

On a simular topic we also have a 2001 Corsa 1.2 SXI am I correct in thinking this engine has a chain rather than a belt?

Thanks for the help. Read more

It has exceeded my criteria of 3 years/ 36000 miles so I advise change in the near future. Its fairly straightforward so any competent garage can do it but insist on a new tensioner.

I had an accident in October. The other party admitted responsibility and lives on the same street.

I received a letter from my insurance company on Friday stating that the "third party is continuing to hold me responsible for the accident". They have proposed a 50/50 split and 2 years loss of no claims bonus as there were no witnesses.

I phoned the third party who re-iterated that it was their fault and did not tell their insurance company it was mine. (They said they just completed the form requesting a sketch of the scene and description of the accident. They have neither accepted nor denied responsibility on this form). They have seen my statement asserting their responsibility.

I have asked my insurance company to send me a copy of their statement. If their statement confirms that they don?t blame me for the accident what are my options?

Does it mean the insurance company blames me? Can they do this?

Thanks in advance

Ok;

Option 1, drop it and write if off to experience.

Option 2;

Speak to the other driver. Get a copy of her written statement from her directly. When you've got that, assuming it says that it was her fault, then write to her and her insurance company enclosing a receipt for your excess, a copy of her statement and ask for remibursement of your excess.

If you get it, then forward proof of that (photocopy of check and letter) to your insurance company and demand resintatement of your bonus, refund of the excess premium that you have paid and an apology for their earlier ridiculous advice.

If you do not get it, then decide;

Option 1, drop it and write it off to experience

Option 2; small claims court

If you get the letter from her, and it admits it was her fault, I suspect that you will find that her insurance company will roll over so fast your ears will be ringing.

I was thinking back the other day about the late 80's when dim-dip technology was introduced (preventing side light driving by switching on dipped beam at half voltage?).
Does anyone know why this was discontinued?
I have noticed many new cars driving around on tiny front side lights.
Perhaps it will come back into discussion with possible future Euro rules on dipped headlights permanently switched on.
(I know motorcycle lobby groups are against this development fearing their loss of visibility if all cars drive with lights on during daylight hours in addition to the usual motorcycles) Read more

I first experienced dim dip with a Volvo 440. After a while I got accustomed to people gesticulating to me to indicate that my lights were on in daylight. I'm all in favour of them. The facility isn't on my present car, so I now run with sidelights permanently on, switching headlights on after dusk.
I'd rather forget to switch the headlights OFF than ON. Recently I have seen quite a number of cars without lights during darkness. The street lighting must be very good to allow one to do that. Problem is when the car is a dark colour, and you don't see it until the last minute.

My mate has asked me to try and sort out his staggeringly slow Dell, running XP, and install SP2 whilst I'm at it (my stupid suggestion).

Having just glanced in the box, I find it has just 128mb/266mhz memory and that might also be shared with the graphics! There is no AGP slot, just a green one with a half card leading to video out.

Before I touch it, I'm planning to get at least an additional 256mb memory, then look for nasties - he has a broadband connection and his son appears to have removed the Zone Alarm I put on it months ago.

Any thoughts on further action?

I think the bb thing is a bit of a red herring. There is nothing stopping you (usually) from using a dial up connection while also connected to bb at the same time.

However you may need to tell your product (IE) which connection to use (Internet Options//Connections), or set the dial up as the default, in case it thinks it has a bb connection. I'm sure you've already tried this.

One thing you could look at is the IP config. Open a CMD window and type IPCONFIG then press enter. It will list your adapters and their IP address etc. It might have an address in the subnet of the bb provider, and be holding and trying to use that because it thinks it's connected. If so, release that address (type IPCONFIG /release). That wouldn't stop the modem getting it's own address, but conceivably it could stop it trying to connect over the modem (or, at least, making it use the bb in preference).

Can you tell I'm guessing? :-)

Hi, just coming back from the supermarket in my purple 98 Mondeo ;) and a yellow warning light came on the dash - the same one that glows when you first put the key in to remind you to put the seatbelt on. It kept flashing all the way home - didn't say on permanently though.

Im presuming its for the airbag - though cause thats included in the "picture". Both seatbelts were in use and fully locked-in.

Thing is - I can't get to a garage until Monday and I needed to use my car tomorrow - do I have a serious problem and should the care be driven???

Any help would be appreciated, guys.

Cheers!

Hi - I've just read on the Yahoo C5 board of a chap who's been quoted £405 for a Xenon bulb!

Can this be right? Should I be panicking? I thought the bulbs were suppose to out last the car (no C5 jokes please) has anybody had a bulb replaced and if so at what cost. Read more
