Had a laugh this morning.
Rang an insurance company for a quote (new business). Got the spiel about 'call being recorded for training purposes'. I then told them that I was also recording the call on my digital answer machine (which has this facility). The girl on the other end then said that she could not speak to me and would have to refer the matter up to a supervisor and call me back!!
Very interesting...... Read more
Good morning all,
It's been decided that we're taking a trip over to Italy this year but there are a few problems which I'm hoping for any experiences/help with.
Mum has a fear of flying. I don't mean an average phobia - I mean to the point where she's been on a plane of the aero variety once - for her honeymoon to, oddly enough, Italy. Hence, we've always been to Scotland or Cornwall but now it's time for a change.
So it's looking like we'll have to drive there. I don't mind as Dad and I will share the driving but we could do with some advice on destinations to stop pver, general routes to take. The original plan was to boat it to Spain (Santander to be precise) and drive from there, to Italy. Dad does the same on his Motorbike but goes around Spain instead of Italy. My question is what about going from Calais. Easier?
Any comments regarding anything to do with the trip are more than welcome as always. And of course I appreciate it.
Cheers,
--

Consider a round trip. Hull to Rotterdam across to Germany, down though a corner of Austria, Lichtenstein, Switzerland, Italy. Back through Switzerland, France, Luxemburg, Belgium, Zebrugge, Hull.
Did this a number of years ago, but starting and finishing in Holland over a weekend Friday evening to early Monday.

As the recent owner of a wife with gps navigation (not new wife or one fitted with gps)but wife now owns a gps nav device, it seems this is just another exspensive gimmick that is not very reliable or accurate and relies on technology that can be lost at the flick of a switch if our friend from the USA think fit to do so by turning off or introducing an offset.
Am I correct in my diagnosis of gps nav for us lesser mortals or have I got it wrong?

I've got it on my Mondeo and it is probably the best gadget yet fitted to any car I have owned. Supremely accurate.

just got off the phone after talking to the insurance claims people. the car is a write off and god knows how they do there pricing but for my 1996 1.7td astra with 98k they are going to pay £1350 plus costs to replace my stereo, nokia hands free kit, two coats in the boot and some tools. that should cost about £500+. i only paid £750 for it. last time i had to claim was when a bloke drove up my backside then they made an offer £900 less then what it was worth....
Hi all,
Looking at a BMW 530d at the moment and was wondering what you guys think its worth. It's a Feb 2002 530d SE with no leather but only about 20k on the clock. Immaculate condition inside and out, in light green.
How much would a car like this fetch at auction, private sale, and also how much would you expect to pay for it at a BMW main dealer?
Thanks. Read more

Pretty sure saw the new Range Rover Sport on the M5 tonight, going northbound near Bridgwater.
Looked like a normal Range Rover from behind, was only when I got closer that realised rear tail lights were wrong, and Range Rover was written across the base of the rear tail gate in large script. Front was also far more rakish than normal.
Anyone else spot this? Read more
Rakish - I rather like that word
Since my 1.2 8v basic 2001 Fiat Punto had its 48000 mile service the engine management warning light flashes when the engine is working hard.
The problem began less than 2 miles from the Fiat dealer's service department and has continued intermittently throughout the 2 months and 3000 miles since then.
It has been back to the dealer 3 times and neither he nor Messrs Fiat appear to have any idea of what is causing it. They have offered to have it back for another day but admit that they don't have a clue and they aren't prepared to admit any liability anyway, and who can blame them.
Rather than mess about any more I decided to live with it. After all, it seems to run perfectly OK.....UNTIL I checked fuel consumption over the last 446 miles: 32.5mpg. Admittedly I have no idea of what it was doing before but that seems pathetic.
Does anyone have any idea of what I should do next?

You don't have to live with it, get them to fix it. Jump up and down, make noises at them, because it looks pretty clear cut that whatever is wrong is down to whatever they have or haven't done. If it was just a service then maybe give them the benefit of the doubt, but with a cambelt change then it is highly likely its down to their 'meddling'. If they can't read a fault code then it sounds like they are a very poor dealer. Call Fiat UK, complain to them and if that goes nowhere, try another dealer and send any bills to the original garage. This makes it sound so simple, but you could end up taking them to the small claims court. Anyway don't back down until its sorted properly.
im planing to spruce up my rusty axle/wishbones etc, i was going to have them sandblasted, then prime and paint
im looking for suggestions of what to use that will last a good time in salty weather etc
anyone have any good experiance with a product?? Read more
I went with just the two recommended coats. Now i've had a look at one of the web sites, I realise I did use the phosporous primer. Getting to the insides of some of the wishbones was a real pain though. If I had to do it again, I'd do it at the same time as changing suspension bushes and have the wishbones off onto the bench. I did pour into a pot, but just for conveniance, I used it all up. The weather can affect it - I wouldn't do it if the air was damp.

I am looking at possibly buying a Rover 75, 2000/01 model. Some cars I have seen advertised include sat nav.
Question is, as any sat nav system is only worthwhile if it has up to date mapping, can anyone out there with a Rover with sat nav confirm that they can keep it up to date with upgrades, whether paid or free?
If so how? Do you have to go through Rover to do so? Read more
Thanks for the replies. I think I may avoid buying a 75 with sat nav and, when I need it, investing in a stand alone product.
Seat Cordoba 1.4 (P reg 54k miles) will not start if left for a day or so. When I attach the charger to the battery it goes straight to fully charged and after a while it will start while still connected. I can use it that day but the following morning or later that day (when parked while at work) it again just quietly humms with no response.
I've changed the battery three times and have had it checked by auto electrician who couldn't find anything. - Any suggestions ? Read more

If you can stretch to a 0870 phone call and don't have the equipment then the link below looks interesting.
