I thought this might justify a new thread.

On another thread a poster is choosing between a Fiesta and Hyundai as new car choice.

They are probably both good cars, and will no doubt give good service to whoever buys.

For us there would have been only one choice here, and that would have been the Hyundai, the unlimited mileage 5 year warranty would have clinched the choice for me.

On another long running thread another maker's very popular small car has been having engine problems at approx 4 years old, though usually well under the 60K miles warranty cut off.
The same maker has not been particularly helpful apparently by the reports many are making. I personally wouldn't have one of their cars again following this little affair.

I'm quite surprised that more makers haven't had to match Hundai's warranty lead to keep their sales up, the only one that springs to mind (apart from Kia of course) is the 5 year offered on the Fiat Bravo.

Now is this an age thing, are the buyers of cars with short warranties younger people maybe more interested in image, whereas the older driver maybe thinks more long term, or are more factors at work here?

What do you think? Read more

I personally highly likely to buy my next car from Hyundai/Kia stable because of long warranty. Of course, I like Daihatsu as well for same reason but shame they don't offer enough choices.

The manufacturers are not giving 5-yr warranty because they are getting away without doing it. If their sales tumble, they'd be forced to do it.

The Hyundai/Kia etc. long warranty providers' shares are growing, but not at that pace to force other manufactures match their offer.

If motoring journos start writing that "Mercedes is afraid of their own product as they don't offer over 3-yr warranty" the companies might consider otherwise.

Having said so, for most manufactures, you can actually extend warranty after 3 years till 5 to 7 years by paying a yearly fee [varies from £300-£800 depending on car].

Have been shopping today for a new car with SWMBO and we have got it down to two cars, the new fiesta 1.4 tdci style + or, a new hyundai i20 1.4 crdi comfort. The ford is an ex demo with 5000 on the clock and the hyundai would be a brand new 59 plate car. What are you guys opinions on the two models and which would you got for if you had the choice. It is so close to call it is impossible the decide. Bothe willcost the same amount but obviously the ford we could collect tomorrow instead of waiting three months. TIA Read more

We picked up a new i20 1.2 Classic for SWMBO a week ago under the scrappage scheme. There is a thread somewhere with our initial experiences. So far, we have been very impressed with the car - but I can't say I would want to do 22k miles pa in it, or indeed in a Fiesta, which we had previously tested.

Although I would probably have preferred the Fiesta (more stylish), my wife preferred the i20. Like for like, it's also about £2k cheaper. Even the base model we have is well specc'd - air con, 6 airbags etc....

One word of caution. I assume that, as you have an ex-demo Fiesta on your list, you don't qualify for scrappage. The i10 and i20 are very popular under the scrappage scheme, and, when we picked up ours, the salesman said they are now taking orders for October delivery. Not sure if that applies to both i10s and i20s, though. Assuming you're going with a factory order, you may want to check with the salesman exactly how long it will be!

This is interesting - be careful what you agree to after an accident. tinyurl.com/n4szf4

The Police attending puts nothing beyond doubt. They're not there to confirm injury or indeed the mechanism of injury. Even the medical people can be stumped with back pain i.e. whether it's there or not, whether it's real or put on.

i've got a knocking noise coming from the rear of my mondeo, only when the car is moving... the slightest pressure on the brake pedal stops it, ? ? thinking could it be a wheel bearing or the brakes ? ? ? any ideas..thanks Read more

Exhaust knocking? Had this on mine, a slight adjustment was needed but all is well now.

Greetings all - first post and would like some advice please!

Looking at buying a 2 year old car that comes with a full length (almost) electric folding Webasto sunroof. Apparently it cost nearly £1k when fitted when the car was new!

Anyone had any recent experience of having one - are they noisy, likely to leak, devalue the car at all?

Any input/thoughts would be appreciated - thanks! Read more

I had one yonks ago. You couldn't have it fully open above a certain speed, about 50MPH IIRC. I did once, heard a bang and wondered why I couldn't see anything in the rear view mirror. It all went back together OK.
No problem with noise, or leaks. There was a little spoiler that flipped up in front of it when it was open. Good for increasing ventilation if you just cracked it open a bit at any speed.

Hi. I have a renault laguna 1.8 16v Dynamique 2002, hatchback and has a rattling sound when idling (like a diesel car). i think that this is probably how they sound, i just bought the car from a local dealer and would not like to think there is a problem already. I am use to driving a 2.5 v6 omega, not these "smaller engined lawnmowers" lol Read more

davidmarcdiver

mine sounds the same, been told by renault it's a noisey dephaser , cost from them was $264 approx and they said to do cam belt same time @ £650, they wouldn't state whether the belt actually needed changing.
has you r car ever stalled ?

I have a friend who when parking the car turns the ignition off before the car has stopped. He then stops the car normally with the brakes for the last couple of feet. Would this cause any damage? Read more

Sooty,

I can see this ending in tears for your friend.

hi everyone ive finaly got my a4 running ,i think ive got the timing out as engines slightly loud and smokes a bit , does anyone have a idea if im correct in thinking timings slightly out ~? Read more

Peter.N.

A pronounced diesel knock would indicate over advanced timing but not usually with smoke, that often comes with retarded timing along with difficult starting.

I've been to a few auctions recently and have noticed that a lot of cars come without registration documents.
I know that should I buy one of these cars I can send off a V62 which will take 4-8 weeks to provide me with the V5, But how do dealers get around this is no V5 is supplied with the car?
surley they would not want to wait 4-8 weeks for the document only to be registered in their name and hence adding to the number of former owners?

That's why dealers are not so keen to bid on them. Some you can tax at a DVLA office with no V5 - it depends if the previous owner has advised the DVLA that is has been "passed to trade".

If you can't then dealer, private or whoever buys it will need to have it sitting until a V5 can be obtained.
