I have tried to re-set the service indicator after self servicing the car - followed the instructions in the handbook as follows.
Hold in trip re-set button; turn ignition on, turn reset button to the right and hold. Display shows spanner then goes to normal display ie miles. But the inspection warning stills shows in the display - does anyone have any ideas please? Read more

Railroad.

You can only reset the service indicator by this method if you want to maintain or change to fixed service intervals. If you want variable service intervals you need to use VCDS or a suitable scantool. My advice is reset it to fixed intervals and then ignore it. Service your car using common sense. Just reset the service indicator whenever it appears. It means nothing on a car more than a couple of years old.

My car is one month out of warranty and I notice the TCS/DSC ( dynamic stability control)warning light stays on when driving, all other warning lights are off.

Any ideas before I take it to a Mazda dealer, we do not have one in Gloucester and the dealer has just changed in Cheltenham so I do not know their track record Read more

Just had the dreaded DSC/TSC light come on for our Mazda 3 Sport 2l. 57plate and done 55k.

Gutted as we love the car - no hassle at all in year we have had it,

Anyway, error code C1288 diagnosed by my own code reader then confirmed by local auto-electrician. Error is:

"pressure transducer main primary input" and it is affecting the ABS pump module.

They looked to see if there were any switches or fuses that could be altered/replaced and no joy there.

Suggestion is it will be an MOT failure. It drives completely fine and has only kicked in since the ABS came on during short drive on icy road.

Surely if Mazda know about this it can't be £1500 to repair to get rid of a SAFETY warning light.

Anyone had any recent experiences with this and what best fix is?

Car had a service today (first service of the diesel engine if it helps) and checked the oil and the level is slightly up from where it was prior to the service but it is still black.

Should this be the case ?

It looks like the garage has just topped up the oil and charged me for new oil and filter.

I tried to look to see if the oil filter had been changed but it is berried deep in the bowels of the engine compartment.

I really hope I am wrong

Hi,

I am currently negotiating compensation package for a new role I have applied for. Currently I have been told this is what they may offer:

50k
5k car allowance
bonus
etc...

At first I was thinking of just taking the car allowance as a top up of the salary, however my bonus and stuff would not take this figure into account. (I dont bother with company pensions so not to bothered about that).

Then I thought I could get a car :) always wanted a nice Mercedes. I probably will try to negotiate the 5k allowance up to 7k if possible, but lets say I dont get it.

I have looked at the www.cashorcar.co.uk/ and it basically came back at £450 I would have to pay on top a month. I believe. However the interest rate is very high (which probably a good idea just incase).

Since I have never had a company car or any scheme like this before I dont have a clue what to do, I dont know how negotiable dealerships would be.

I would say I would put a 5k deposit for the car to make payments easier, however who actually owns the car? what happens after 3 years? lets say I am offered 14k for the car for an exchange, I would have put in about 13/14k in payments (including interest) new car would be about 30k so would I only owe 16k for the new car in exchange and carry on as per normal?

what happens if Ilose my job? can I just give the car back? I would have lost the money I over paid?

Also I am wondering since the 5k allowance would be topped up, i would get taxed on that as per normal salary the remaining amount i would use to buy the car? or would the company deal with the purcahse of the car etc...

Thanks

Kash

You will save a load of money if you buy an older car. Even 6 months old will make a big difference.

hi all,

just parked my car in an on-street marked space in Glasgow, which had a list of the charges on a sign and also the following wording: "no return within 3 hours".

But what does this mean? No returning to the specific space? To the area? If I move my car one space down the road in 3 hours time after obtaining another ticket, am I ok?

Doubtless this info is available on the Glasgow City Council website, but this doesn't seem to be available today. Apologies if this has been covered on the forum, but a forum search found nothing close.

thanks

Can anyone tell me if £360 quoted by my local Ford dealer is a fair price to charge for a cam belt replacement? Also, my manual says 100k or ten years for cam belt replacement, my 1.6 Zetec hatchback has done 81k. On my last service the dealer said I should look at getting the belt changed asap. When I mentioned the hand book I just got a shrug of the shoulders and a "best be on the safe side mate". If the belt requires changing at 80k, then why doesn't the manual say '80k'and not 100k? Taken from : www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/index.htm?md=116

"Some fleets reckon on just 60,000 miles for Zetec E timing belts and idler pulleys. 35,000 miles still max for diesel timing belts. (Later 1.8 TDCi diesel engine is belt cam, not chain cam like 2.0 Mondeo TDCi.) On 1.8 petrol engines, timing belt tensioners are failing over 80,000 miles and 5 years old."

Hi one and all,

I have a vauxhall astra 1.6 life. My car recently started whistling and i tool it to the mechanics. Now my mechanic says that he couldnt take the oil cap off because there was too much pressure in the engine. Now when he eventually can take off the cap the car runs fine, even when he takes off another air pipe again and replaces the oil cap again the car runs fine. But when everything is back in its place air pressure seems to build up inside and it starts whistling (like a old style kettle boiling).

Any help or advice on this matter would be hugely appreciated.

Thanks in advance. Read more

I am ashamed to say I know little about cars and since moving from my old house no longer go to my trusty local garage but to a big dealership.

We've put our 2005, 1.4, golf in for its 60,000 service and they've come back to say it needs the timing belt replaced (for an astonishing £599) even though it hasn't actually gone.

Should we get this done now? Would it be 'detrimental' to the car (as the garage says) if we leave it until it actually goes? and would it cost so much more money to replace it when it actually goes?

any advice would be gratefully received!

I need new tyres. Has anyone used Black Circle Tyres?

The idea is that you buy the tyres online, they are delivered to and fitted by a garage of your choosing.

It sound as though it could be quite painless and save a few quid into the bargain.

Has anyone tried them, does it work? I am in Surrey. Read more

Amazon do sell tyres directly. For example this week they have had 205/55/R16 tyres by Goodyear for £51.79 and Pirelll for just under £51. Supply only. Free delivery for Prime members.

Sorry, I actually didn't mean Amazon selling tyres directly, more a general policy over sales, but its good to know they do. I wonder if they now sell k****** sinks, as the seem to sell just about everything else!!...

What are your experiences of owning and driving a Ford Focus 2.0 TDCi 136 ps ? (any model)

In particular pre 2008 versions and the upgraded 2008 version.

Is there a noticable improvement in refinement and quietness in the Focus II upgrade compared with the original Focus II ?

Is the 2008 onwards engine an improvement over the pre 2008 engine and if so how would you describe it ?

Do 17" alloys with 205/50 tyres impact or affect the ride quality and/or increase road noise transmission compared with standard 16" alloys with 205/55 tyres ?

Are there any negative experiences/issues of note with post 2008 Focus 2.0 TDCi models ? Read more

Both very good cars, with different pluses and minuses as people have pointed out.

A VW is better value bought new, a Ford secondhand, as VWs hold their value better (partly through perception of build quality, mainly because there are lots of ex-fleet Focuses around). If you're buying used, I should think there are some good bargains to be had if you go for a Focus.
