I seem to have lost the link where you could put a registration number and car type into a website and it tells you if it's still registered or not; can anyone help please? I can't even remember who runs the website in question! Read more

It's an XJ-S so our hypothesis is it's either being used as a source of spares or, as you say, a restoration project.

I don't suppose there's any way of finding out?

My Honda Accord 2.0 I-VTEC is due for it's 2nd service in a few weeks so I thought I'd ring around for a few prices today. Apparently it is due for a "major service" - oil, filters (air/oil/air con), spark plugs and a general check over. I tried 5 local main dealers - the most expensive was £350 and the cheapest was £245. The cheapest dealer even offered a free loan car and offered to collect / drop off our car, so I guess they will get the business.

I was told that during a major service on a VTEC engine the valve clearences are checked, meaning the rocker cover has to come off. This is a new one on me - anyone else heard of this ? Read more

Try getting authorisation for that at 18k miles from a leasing company.

Yep - today I took the plunge and have made perhaps the riskiest decision of my car-buying life and bought a Shogun 3.2DiD Auto Classic.

So why is it risky?

Its a stolen-recovered with an immobiliser problem. The interior is tidy (although the radio has been removed without care), and the bodywork only has a small dent in the wing. The leather seats are without damage. Its just the immobiliser and the fuel-pump that make it a non-starter. Oh, and its got no history with the vehicle (apart from a phone call to the supplying dealer confirming the only times they saw it was at 80K for a service and MOT).

Its got 111K on the clock, and its a 2001 Y.

Anyone want to tell me I've made a mistake? I will hopefully be having it delivered to my mechanic on Friday....

Can't figure out what I Have done wrong, took of the filter, filled the new one with fuel, put it back on and it just won't start. Noticed some air in the pipe. Any help? I know on my old peugeot, you could pump the fuel by hand, but not on this :(

Thank you for the tip. I will bear this in mind next time I change the filter.

Hi everyone,

I've got a 54 reg Renault Clio II 1.5dCi 100 bhp. It's a couple of months past it's warranty and the climate control has died. The c/c computer is still working fine, but there's nothing coming out of the vents.

It's not the fuse, as it failed once, then a few times, then permanently. It's not the heater, as if i leave it on i can feel that there is heat seeping out of the vents (but only passively) and I've tried different vents, power settings, temperatures and with/without air-con.

Searching a few forums suggested a similar problem on RenaultSport Clios might be down to a blocked fan in the overhead console, but I'm told there isn't one on a standard clio. A renault mechanic told me there's a history of rheostat failure on clios, and I've also read that a resistor might be to blame (although that might be the same as the rheostat?).

I'm quite far from my local garage, so struggling to get it booked in. I've bought a Haines manual, but while it's great at walking through a fix, it doesn't help me to diagnose the problem.

Has anyone seen this before?

Thanks a lot, Adam Read more

In the days before CANBUS In did that job for (Rover) approx £3.50 (ten yrs ago) using ballast resistors instead of the manufactures module, which then cost £70 ish.

According to the Press the VW diesel Outlander is not that good - the 2.2 Peugeot Diesel comes only in the top model listing @ £26K

The Peugeot & Citroen models have the 2.2 diesel and start @ £22K list - the Citroen Dealers are more likely to offer discounts - I tried the Mitsubishi dealers for a discount and got nowhere other than a nominal cut in the advertised price - I ended up with an X-trail.

So far the X-trail is fine - only 1600mls on the clock but in 44 years of car ownership I have had numerous early breakdowns including a tow back within 5 miles of the garage (MGB in 1972) - so fingers crossed.

hi
had my 1993 escort diesel van about a month ago and its been great starts well after about 5 seconds of cranking when cold then first turn for the rest of the day and it does get stopped and started a lot. It had been stood for over a year when i bought it but still fired up with a jump and ran great and started great when i put a bigger and new battery on it.

However this morning it started fine so i set off down my road then had to stop as some silly old man pulled out on me then the van stalled. It would not restart so i tryed to bump it it started but immediately died and still wont restart.

It turns over fine but just wont get going. I changed the fuel filter and plenty of fuel came out, but now it doesn't seem to be getting fuel thru it when i press the self prime button.

It did do this once before in the same spot lol but managed to get it started about an hour later after just leaving it it did take awhile of cranking tho but started and ran fine since.

Any ideas guys... cheers

Glad to hear that you've sorted it. So it was the diaphragms in the priming pump after all.

'Surprised that someone didn't mention that....

I'm about to take delivery of a pair of bikes and am after suggestions for transporting them. The Megane Sport Tourer (estate, to the rest of us) is not fitted with a tow bar, boot does have roof rails, so I assume a roof rack of some sort is some way to go.

any recommendations, or products/brands to avoid ?

cheers, and Happy New Year

I'd warn you off boot mounted racks whether your lid is plastic or not. They tend to not be very stable, they cover the lights and numberplate, meaning that you need to have a lighting board to stay legal, or they are way up high, which means that you have all the disadvantages of a roofrack without the stability.

You can get roof bars and mounts very cheaply. I've always used Thule, which costs more, but to be honest the main advantage is that the mounts are very quickly adjustable for any bike. If you are always carrying the same bikes then I doubt that this would be a problem. A pair of cheap roof bars from Ikea, plus a Halfords special at £40 for two mounts and you'd be away.

Hi there, I was wondering if anyone could give me a spot of advice please. A couple of years ago I bought a private reg that I'm unlikely to use again. I had the sense to put it on retention and have been renewing it since.

I've had a quote off an online company (not sure if I'm allowed to mention the name on here or not) offering to advertise it - they've valued it at £1,200. I'm a bit concerned as they don't say what percentage they'd take or what the charge would be if someone bought it. I'll have to chase it up, but it bothers me it's not stipulated clearly on an agreement slip that came through by email if I choose to go ahead. I've previously advertised the plate on ebay without success and also advertised it at work before now.

The other cause for concern is that if I'm advertising this nationally, how do I make sure I don't sign over my rights to the reg no before I receive payment?

Does anyone have any experience with these reg. no. companies (good or bad) or can anyone point me in a good direction, please?

I sold my plate about three years ago via one of the big no plate companies.
I had a choice , either they sold it on commission or they bought it from me.
They sent extensive paperwork and conditions including a legal disclaimer for me to sign.
I sold it to them and it disappeared off their advert after about six weeks.
Absolutely no problem dealing with them.

Anther company replied online and said they were not interested. ( their choice which I knew was wrong).

Do several online searches for similar no plates to try and value it.
and of course the DVLA prices of sold plates.
