Was forced to mount the kerb in a hurry earlier today when an ambulance overtaking stationery traffic on it's side of the road (and with blue lights but no siren) drove straight at me.

I appreciate it was heading to save someone's life (better had have been...) so I've no gripe with that, but, I've damaged my alloy. There's a fair chunk/scuff out of the rim.

Is it best to clean it up and find something to seal it with so that it doesn't get worse, or get it repaired somehow? I know from colleagues' experiences that our leasing co can be a bit picky with alloys so I don't want to let it fester for a couple of years and get badly corroded if there's a quick fix for it now.

Duplicate post.

An old thread gets to the 'top of the pile' if someone newly posts on it.

That's what I thought, but all the dates seem to be 2007 apart from mine, and I wouldn't have seen it if it hadn't been near the top of the pile.

Doesn't bother me, just slightly puzzled. ...

Was reading somewhere about someone who had stuck a sticker on someone's car which was parked in a disabled bay without a badge. What is the legality on sticking stickers on someone's windscreen? Normally the car will be parked on a supermarket's carpark and not on the high street where my guess is that different law may apply. Where i used to work the security guard had the right to stick notices on the windscreen if the car is not properly parked. We were powerless to do anything as we said some nice things about the security guards as we tried to remove the sticky labels from the screen. Read more

Hi All,
As some of you may recall I had a big problem with the car six weeks ago,the HG blew and the garage replaced it without finding the cause. One day later after collecting it from the garage it blew again ,loss of coolant and oil in reservoir ,so back to the garage it went. Two weeks later and second new HG and new oil cooler the car was back on the road and working fine.

Last Sunday having had the car back from the garage for just over a week I drove to Birmingham from Northants on the motorway with no probs at all, parked the car for 8 hours and when I then tried to start it it would only turn over and was not firing.I called the ** and after a 3 and half hour wait the mech arrive and squirted Easy Start in the air intake , it started up!! we left it for 5 mins then turned off the engine, tried to start it again but same problem, more easy start and it fired up.

The mech gave me a report for my garage which said "diesel fuel possibly being pushed back from the injectors.".?? the car has now been in the garage since the 23/7/07,the mech said he has done a EMU check and it showed no problem ,the fuel pump is okay but the starting problem remains the same..

I am at my wits end (and so is the mechanic)!!.

Any ideas pleaseeeeeee!

Hi,
Suffering from exactly the same problem. My mechanic is about to start trying to fix it. Would love to save him the heartbreak (and me the cost!) of wrong solutions. Can you please, please, please, let me know what the problem was with yours?
Thanks, Lisa

I have seen an increasing amount of cars on the roads that are driving with both wing mirrors folded in. They seem to be mostly on cars which have the option of electrically folding them when parked.

Does anyone here know if there is a problem with reliability with them? Can they be folded out manually if so? Do drivers just not bother to press the button? Is it illegal to drive with them folded in? Does it irritate other people or is it just me?

I only really want to know as it is one of my pet hates, especially after someone pulled into my lane on the motorway recently without having seen me because..... the wing mirror was folded in!!!

{It's a pet hate of mine when someone refers to door mirrors as wing mirrors, hence the subject header amendment ;o) - DD} Read more

OK, this is only peripherally 'car related'. I need my yard and workshop frontage (quite a big area) tarmacing. Had a chap round this morning and I'm being quoted nearly £70/tonne for tarmac. Given I need 60-80 tonnes to cover the area that seems a lot just for raw materials (quarry waste is also needed - about £27/tonne I'm told).
What is happening here? I don't remember tarmac being this expensive (in relative terms). Are the Chinese buying it all and pushing the price up? I should have gone into the construction industry, seems to be a lot of money being made at the moment. Read more

A friend rang last night to say that her 206 has been diagnosed with coil pack failure by the Pug dealer. The dealer says that the car has the 'early' system which will be replaced with a later (and one hopes more reliable) version. Car is under 4 years old and has done about 36k. Out of warranty on time, but mileage not high. I've suggested she contact Pug on the basis that the modified coil pack indicates a known problem and that if it had been used more it probably would have failed within the 3 years. Before she calls, can anyone advise if this is a 'known' problem, which may help her case.

TIA

Agreed - not sure what screwloose's problem is, but if I had a 36k 4 yr old car with a component failure, I would think it reasonable to ask the manufacturer for some contribution (and most manufacturers would oblige). Especially as a "better" part suggests the original one fitted clearly wasn't the best design!

Hi there,

my friends 1998 corsa 1.0 12v has just had an oil change, shortly after returning from the garage, the oil light came on, so she stopped, checked the oil level - which was just below the maximum mark. so she continued to drive. the oil light remained illuminated.

And now, the car sounds like a really unrefined diesel engine when running, (much like a cavalier 1.7TD), the noise sounds very "tappety". I'm wondering if the garage has used the wrong grade of oil in the car?? Am i correct in thinking this?? and also, does anyone know the grade of oil that should be used?

cheers

so she continued to drive. the oil light remained illuminated.

As per the other comments, a big no no. The light isn't an oil level check light IT IS an oil pressure check light. Please drum it into your friends head that if this light ever comes on again, then turn off the engine immediately and at the very least do as the handbook suggests, or alternately seek professional advice from a mechanic. But whatever she does, DO NOT continue to let the engine run.

Lecture over.
also does anyone know the grade of oil that should be used?

Been awarded DLA which means i am eligible to get a car through the mobility scheme. Is it worth getting a car through mobility? I am sure this topic must have been covered before. To refresh your mind i will get a car for 3 years, have all expenses paid for apart from petrol. Read more

Hi Guys,

I've just bought a new car, as my old was overheating, but now the new one is doing it... argh!

So it's a Ford Fiesta Zetec 1.25, 1999, 32000 miles, Serviced every year since new. Today i noticed the gauge going into the red, it could have been doing it before, i'm not sure, but i've only had it for a week! Opened the bonnet to here a whooshing gurgling noise coming from the pipe that goes into the expansion tank to the main heating block bit, rather than the pipe going from expansion tank to rad. I'm not sure if this is normal, but it looked like coolant was coming back to the expansion tank from the engine.
I let it cool, came back to it and the expansion tank was pretty much empty. I filled it up with antifreeze on a 60:40 ratio, went to the petrol station and filled it up. Took it round the block a few times and it went into the red again. Popped the hood again, the fan is cutting in. There doesn't appear to be any leak in the system.

I can't be 100% that the coolant was at the correct level when i bought it - so maybe i'm hoping adding this coolant will help? It's a vague hope i guess..

I'm dubious of a head gasket fault as oil looks clean and no traces of oil in expansion tank.

Other problems i'd assume would be an airlock, water pump or thermostat issue. Any thoughts?

Thanks for your help :) Read more
