Purchased a car from an independant dealer. I didn't take the extended warranty but am aware (I think) of the 3 month statutory warranty which comes with buying a car from a dealer. They confirmed it comes with a 3 month warranty and gave me some paperwork.
Fault has arisen with car (an engine managment light has come on - don't know what repair will entail yet) and they are taking in to look at but said I am likely to be liable for the policy excess if it is a significant repair (excess is £100). Is this right? I would have thought that I should not be liable to pay a warranty policy excess on a fault occuring in the first 3 months of having the car?
Any advice would be useful so I am armed with the right answers if they ask me to pay the excess.

I have just purchased a 3 yr old BMW from a non-franchised dealer advertised with full BMWSH. When I asked to see the paperwork he produced a number of copies of BMW receipts for every service and this shows the car has indeed been well maintained by a main dealer.
However, he said there is no service book - presumably lost.
He said I could contact BMW who would issue a duplicate and stamp it up. Could anyone confirm whether this is possible? Is it a straighforward process? Do they charge a fortune?
I also read in another post that you can ring BMW and they will confirm service records over the phone - will they do this even if the car isn't through an Approved Used BMW sale?

To give an update. It certainly is the case that the main BMW Customer Service have limited access to a car's service records. They told me it had had 3 visits (which worried me slightly as it's done quite a few miles). They put me onto the actual servicing dealer who gave me the miles and inspection types for 6 visits. Everything looks in order and backs up what the seller has told me. It was very useful to talk to the actual dealer who was very helpful.
@Andy - I didn't bother to ask for a book (as knowing the information is the main thing). If I had known they might have done it for free then I would have!!
Could anyone tell me whether the difference between RHD and LHD headlights is all in the glass - or are the reflectors and bodies different too?

Just out of interest this one, as - despite it being occasionally annoying - I doubt I can be bothered with the hassle of doing anything about it.
The estate I live on has a covenant saying that no commercial vehicles can be parked on it overnight. One of our near neighbours not only ignores the covenant, but actually parks his very large van right outside the entrance to our drive, making it quite awkward getting in and out. It's hard to describe, but we're on the end of a cul-de-sac, our drive goes straight on to the end of the cul-de-sac, he parks at the side of the road, with the nose of his van against the join between road and driveway. We can only get out because our driveway and our neighbours are side by side, double the normal width.
Anyway, to the point: What's the legal situation with the covenant? Who would you complain to? Who has the power to enforce the rule? I would guess it's not a police matter. Read more
OP - a letter to the local Network Rail Head Office - preferably to the legal section should get this sorted - explain the problem and the covenant issue. I have had dealings with NR and one thing they are hot on is policies and procedures.
Hmm - I have a feeling their legal section may have other matters on their mind for the next few...well, years actually!
I have a 1.5 dci engine in my 05 Kangoo and have been told to change the EGR valve at 25k. This is supposed to cure the inherant fault with the turbo `blowing` on these engines. If I take this to be true (even though the car is serviced every 6k) can someone tell me whereabouts on the engine I can find it and is it an easy job to do?
The servicing is done very regularly because it is used for multiple short runs every day (upto 30!). Its now coming upto 30k and its getting me fairly worried because I dont fancy a large repair bill if it can be avoided.........Gordon. Read more

Is that why I don't have much trouble with my French motors either??
3rd gear is for 30 mph, not 5th - the engine (and your wallet) will thank you for it.

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....
I've just had an oil and filter change on my Citroen Berlingo (5 years old, 62,000 miles) at a main dealer.
As I was waiting, a gent came out of the workshop with the sump plug to show me that the thread was damaged. I'm not sure, but I think that means that the thread on the sump itself would also be damaged. He told me he was going to try to get it in, but he was not certain it would work - and if it didn't, the car would need a new sump - which he didn't have in stock. Anyway, he got it in, but told me next time the oil is changed, the car will need a new sump.
How common is this sort of damage? I was surprised to hear of it on a fairly new vehicle. Read more
The torque setting for my MB sump plugs is a mere 25 Nm.
My Fiesta is sounding a bit more healthy now, the head gasket problem has turned out to be cold weather producing steam and short runs producing mayo, after 50 miles there engine has used little water and produces little steam so I think its safe to say that problem is cured.
The camshaft rattle has also reduced a little (probably as the new oil gets to work).
The car is still a tad smokey though nothing bad but a little bit more than what is considered normal on a Festa. I am going to spend Saturday on taking the rocker cover off to have a look inside. It as the usual Fiesta diesel sound which suggests to me the pushrods need adjusting.
Once I get the rocker cover off how to adjust these pushrods? I assume its a bit more tricky than simply tightening them. While I am at it is there any easy ways of adjusting valve clearances?
Its a simple chain driven push rod engine so I assume this would be a job for a novice.
If the smoke is being caused by the camshaft damage (very slight I have been told) then I guess I will need a new engine as its an engine out job anyway on a Fiesta (no overhead cams here).
Thanks for any advice. Read more
One thing I forgot to mention - as a novice, don't screw down the rocker bolts too tight, as you'll distort the cover and end up with an oil leak.
Oh, and grease the new gasket on the head mating face to ease removal later.

Please can anyone help with this?
ON Saturday night someone who shall remain nameless threw up inside my husband's company car. In trying to puke out of the window, they managed to get vomit both inside and outside the car, and down inside the car door where the window goes when its wound down.
I've been out scrubbing with bio washing powder and bicarbonate of soda, the upholstery smells OK now but when you wind the window down it still smells of sick. I've pushed back the trim and washed all the visible parts but I think there may still be some sick further down. When the window is up, the gaps in the trim are inside, so not an area that would be affected by rainwater or a car wash.
What worries me is that there may still be some traces of sick stuck down inside the window recess area, which will continue to smell unless I can somehow get them out. I don't know much about cars though and have no idea (a) whether this area is accessible somehow and (b) whether I might do more harm than good trying to get cleaning products or even water down inside the door
Does anyone *please* have any hints on how I might clean this up to save us having to pay who-knows-what to get it professionally cleaned?

>Why will it raise his prices by 17.5%? If he is supplying materials in say the construction industry and 50% of his estimate/quotation is for materials he will have already included the v.a.t. element in his charges, therefore his £ uplift will surely be 8.75%
I should have qualified that - his prices could go up by as as much as 17.5% - if all he is doing is supplying his time, with no bought in materials or services, then 17.5% will be the uplift. Could easily be the case if he's a consultant type.
