This happened to me recently on an A road and got me thinking.
I'm in the left hand lane in a moving flow of traffic
Car in the right hand lane parallel to me at the same speed
His section of road finishes shortly
He forces me to brake sharply or else reprofile the whole side of my car.
Question is should i have let him pull in front (no time) or should he have slowed down and pulled in earlier?
How would it stand if he had struck me?

The ABS sensors in my car (Hyundai Accent X-reg) have packed up. The dealer said it would need new sensors and new drive shafts leading to a whopping £700 bill.
Since normal braking is fine, I don't want to fix it.
But is it going to fail in MOT?
There is a single red warning light on dash showing [(!)(P)BRAKE] altogether. As soon as parking brake is released the light goes off. After driving for sometime [1 minute], the light comes up and stays.
I still have few months from next MOT. Wondering whether I should keep the car or trade it (won't expect more than £1000 anyway). Read more
abs is compulsory on all new cars which are mass produced
there is an excemption for cars built in small numbers, TVR etc tend to use that excemption
you wouldnt know your rear wheels locking was a problem unless you have done an emergency stop from high speed
get it fixed
I?ve recently heard adverts on the radio for aircon recharges at Kwik Fit for £44.95 with the option of a clean for an extra for £19.95. Now, I wouldn?t normally go near Kwik Fit but this does look tempting, assuming they know what they?re doing.
Does anyone have any experience of this service, good or bad?
Thanks,
DB

The subject of 'nuisance' parking has been raised in a recent thread regarding 'for sale' notices, so to avoid hi-jacking I'll raise this separately.
I'd like to know how many cars would be deemed 'reasonable' to own - for the purposes of having them all parked on a regular residential steet. I have two cars and SWMBO has one. We keep them all parked on the street outside as we have no private land or drive available. All have valid tax/MoT/insurance, and we never block anyone else's drive access.
Unfortunately, our neighbour has passed the odd snide comment along the lines of: "that's quite a collection you've got there" - partly because we sometimes have to park outside their house on 'their' bit of road.
I believe that cars are only allowed to park on-street by the good grace of the police, and that technically they cause an obstruction by preventing the 'passing and re-passing' of that particular piece of tarmac.
So how many cars could we own and park before the police took an interest? Read more
I too like the Japanese solution ie you must have space to keep it before you have a car,I sailed for many years and found when I started and had the idea of a small dinghy that I could tow to the coast and launch it didnt work soon found you had to pay to launch or for a mooring to keep it on,has coloured my thinking towards those who think the road is put there for them to park on.
I shall now retire to my bunker before the flack starts flying.

Most modern cars now offer 6-12 years anti-perforation warranty.
What exactly it is? Is it same as rust-proof warranty? Read more
Generally the panel has to 'perforate' from the rear - i.e. rusting through from exterior is not usually covered....
My immobiliser has immobilised my 1997 Jeep really well. However, I cannot now mobilise. I have re-programmed the fob, changed the batteries, disconnected the car battery, tried the main dealer, tried auto electrics company, all to no avail. I would be happy to have the system removed but am informed the system was fitted when it was imported and is an integral part of the wiring system and impossible to take off. I had even done the honourable thing and had it converted to LPG.
Any ideas or suggestions how to get me back on the road would be greatly appreciated

Even though this is an add on for the uk market you car did have a immobiliser from new in the roof with RKE fob interface but this didn?t conform to uk thatchem speck. so this was removed and a new thatchem one fitted under the steering wheel that incorporates the RKE for you locks. The engine ecu needs to get a signal from one of the immobilisers to allow the vehicle to start if not it will start and run for 2 or 3 seconds then cut out. Does you car start at all? If it doesn?t it?s unlikely to be your immobiliser at fault. More likely it?s the crankshaft sensor. Does the dash all work, fuel gauge, battery voltage? Regards, Merlin

Dear friends
Has anyone 1st hand experience of the driving school franchise I can see its not a get rich scheme & the franchise looks a little expensive but do you gain from the benifits, I asume it would be difficult to achieve 40 hrs a week allowing for down time inbetween lessons & travelling without putting in 50-60 but do you get the pupils put forward? I would appreciate comments from those who have actually done it or indeed found it a huge sucess.
I have calculated it would probably work well in conjunction with another part time job?

I second that. Before the business, the logistics and the money decide whether or not the actual job is something you can genuinely do, and would enjoy doing. If so then you have the better foundations for success - work comes by word of mouth, and people hang on to a good instructor like a good tradesman/woman.
as an aside (and not directed at the OP) I feel the industry has been watered down, not helped by adverts everywhere you look claiming "become a driving instructor" "30k plus a year" "choose your hours..." This has lead to lots of people thinking "yeah I can drive" and "ooh loads a money," and results in a flood of people thinking they can just sit in a passenger seat and earn easy money....
I have a megane philips 22cd379 stereo and dont know how to put the code in, i have the code but do not know what buttons to press to allow me to enter the code...

Hi,
I've got a 2002 peugeot HDi estate with 50k on the clock. Anyone tell me when I need to get the cambelt changed. Looking at it it looks like a major job to do. Is this the case??

I believe 90,000 - 100,000 miles is the "recommended" life of these belts. My trusted indie says he has changed them at this mileage and they still look pretty good. However, as my 306 approached 75,000 we had a discussion and he admitted that, for peace of mind, maybe this was a good compromise point for the belt to be changed. The thing was, the water pump was just starting to leak, so it was definitely a good moment. The car is just a wee bit quieter with the new belt (slight modification to the tooth design?), though belt noise was never an issue.
