tyre tread

A neighbour has just bought a 2001 Y reg 1.0 litre polo and I offered to do an oil & filter change as they need to drive it away tomorrow AM and the oil is in a poor state.

Can anyone confirm that the oil filter is located in the N/S wing and if the sump plug is a straightforward socket job or a hex and if so what size?

Thanks in advance.

When surrendering your tax disc, what percentage do you get back? Read more

John R @ Work {P}

Hi Ian,

DVLA site says...

How much refund will I get?

You can get a refund for each full month left to run on the tax disc at the time you apply for a refund. To get a refund for any one month, the tax disc must posted to DVLA, Swansea or handed into a DVLA local office before the first day of the month.

The cost of a six month licence includes a 10 percent handling charge which DVLA do not include when they work out your refund.

Has anyone yet looked over this new car? Had a good look at it on Sunday, in the showroom of course.
I thought that the interior, in some respects was an improvement over the old Corolla but wasn't too keen on the arched centre console incorporating the gear lever and handbrake - this all seemed a bit gimmicky and impractical and only served to make access to an oddments tray a trifle difficult.
In other respects the design had that chunky 'plastic' look about it but am sure that it will sell as well as its predecessor.
If I were to buy one, say, to replace my MK V Golf, then I'd go for the 1.6 petrol engine which appears to put out more PS then my current Golf.
Hopefull the recent criticisms about Toyota reliability and fall from grace, will be halted and we may see the new Auris raise Toyota's past good record in the car reliability stakes.

Why can't we just have proper names or numbers?
Auris sounds too much like 'auroch' to me.

The wife has one of these and it had been dumping oil on the drive. Had a good look round the engine and could see no evidence of any oil escaping, except for an oily mess on the top of the radiator. I then took off the top of the expansion bottle and out spewed like a volcano black filth, a mixture of water and oil. My immediate thought was head gasket or head had gone, very expensive. The car however was running fine, no overheating or lack of power, everything normal. I then spoke with a friend who is in the trade and he said he had thought it may be the oil cooler. He asked around his pug contacts and they confirmed this as a possibility. Get on with the job then sir and £80 later job done. It still appears to be leaking coolant, which is now grey rather than black although i would expect this as although the system was well flushed out the radiator has not been changed.
My question to the forum iswhy should it stil be leaking coolant from the overflow of the expansion bottle? Any ideas chaps please Read more

These engines are notorious for air locks, due to the design of the cooling system and any significant drop in the coolant level can easily be mistaken as a radiator leak or head gasket failure, when it is often down to an air lock within the system as a result of the system not being bled correctly when filling. A blowing head gasket on a 1.9TD or HDi normally results in coolant being forced out through the radiator cap under excessive pressure, and rarely results in coolant/oil cross contamination until the head gasket fails totally.

The time has come to change my car. Have a budget of around £7000-£7500. New car must be as new as possible, cheap (ish) to run and reliable.

Currently looking at new shape 05 reg focus which are just in budget, any other suggestions would be welcome.

Can anyone answer me this. I was driving along a road which has 2 lanes both heading in the same direction. There is a sign fixed to a lamp post which shows that the road ahead narrows (the sign which looks like a bottle). After approx 150 to 200 yards the road changes from 2 lanes to 1 and usually the outside lane filters into the nearside lane. There are cars parked to the nearside in a designated layby, no arrows or other markings on the road.

Out of the 2 lanes, nearside and offside, who has the right of way. I am asking as I always assumed the inside lane did until I was hit in the side of my car by a white van and the driver said I should have given way to him.

Comments help would be appriciated as I am currently discussing the matter with the insurance companies, who are going the way of a 50 / 50 decision.

I have bought a W reg PEUGEOT 206 GLX. After a few weeks (and out of the warranty given), it's started to make a squeeling noise from the engine bay. The noise is to the offside and is coming from the area where the belt is. I have sprayed WD40 onto the belt and this seems to cure it for a while. I don't think it's the water pump, I think it's one of the pulley's (possibly bearing / lack of grease) Is this a simple job to do and how do you do it? Is ti possible to replace the grease without removal?

Thanks Read more

If it is the aux belt get one from a Peugeot / Citroen dealer as they launched a modified anti squeal belt a couple of years back, less then £10 for the part.

On a similar theme I remember going on boating holidays for the week on the Norfolk Broads, you parked your car up in the car park round the back but had to leave the car keys at the boatyard, reason was in case of fire so the cars could be moved / access for fire engines etc.

Never had any issues though.

Question 306 clock/temp
scfc_151

i was wondering if anyone new how to solve this?.....

i have a 306 2001 with a digital clock/temp gauge

i used the cigarette lighter for the sat nav and after that the light has gone out on the clock. The power has not completely gone because when the ignition/engine is on, the time and temp are visible but very faint as if the ignition is off.
i have checked the fuses and plug in the back and the interior lights etc work

im not sure if this is just conincedental that this has happened after using the cigarette lighter but just wondered what things i can check

cheers

I have a 2000 Subaru Forester Turbo which has been missing around 3-4000 revs. Several visit to my local Subaru agent have merely elicited the response "until something shows up on the computer we can't pinpoint the problem".

I understand that replacing parts on a trial and error basis would prove expensive, especially when you look at the price of Subaru spares and main agents hourly rates, but would appreciate any advice you may be able to give to solve this problem

Most likely to be an ignition problem I would have thought. Could you try an independent Suby repairer - there are quite a few around. In my part of the world there's API (Warwickshire) and Roger Clark (SW Leicestershire) - but plenty of others elsewhere in the country. This Boxer engine has a long history and is used in all the Subys so there is quite a good 'body of knowledge' on what does and doesn't go wrong.
