hi
had my 1993 escort diesel van about a month ago and its been great starts well after about 5 seconds of cranking when cold then first turn for the rest of the day and it does get stopped and started a lot. It had been stood for over a year when i bought it but still fired up with a jump and ran great and started great when i put a bigger and new battery on it.
However this morning it started fine so i set off down my road then had to stop as some silly old man pulled out on me then the van stalled. It would not restart so i tryed to bump it it started but immediately died and still wont restart.
It turns over fine but just wont get going. I changed the fuel filter and plenty of fuel came out, but now it doesn't seem to be getting fuel thru it when i press the self prime button.
It did do this once before in the same spot lol but managed to get it started about an hour later after just leaving it it did take awhile of cranking tho but started and ran fine since.
Any ideas guys... cheers
slt

So the priming button doesn't pump anymore? Does it suck in air? Does it stay down?
The diaphragms inside fail - a lot! Tape a sealed bag airtight over the pump capsule and crank it.
[Or has someone nicked your fuel overnight?]

tbh im not 100% sure what i should be doing with the prime button, im into my volkswagens and never had a ford or a diesel before more used to my mk1 golfs lol.
Could you explain to me exactly what i should be doin to get fuel thru please?
i was going to fill up straight away but was by no means empty and i stuck 5lt in after i changed the fuel filter with the jerrycan.
cheers

This works better if I do the questions and you do the answers.
When you pump the button what are you getting coming through?
Tried the bag trick?
|
when i pump the button nothing comes thru. when the bleed valve is open it pushes air out.
havnt tried bag trick yet will do tomorrow, its cold an no street lights where the van is and my patience with it is lacking lol.
thanks for the help i appreciate it.

Anyone else still having no luck gettin it started. cheers

Sounds probably like the primer diaphragm. With the bleed closed, when you pump the button to prime, it should feel harder to push after a few pumps. The bag trick sounds like a plan, you could maybe even use a few layers of cling film as this would be less volume to pump.

right ive sorted this now, cheers for the help. Ill give some info for anyone else who may need this is the future.
So fuel wasnt gettin to the primer pump, pressing the button didnt work. puttin abag over it an sealing it got alittle fuel thur but no enough.
So off i went to scrappy and managed to find 2 other primer pumps, fitted one ofthem, left the pipe to injection off and pump after a good few pump fuel squirted out. connected the pipe back up and pump a few more times.
id read that i might have to remove injectors and crank it til fuel came out then reconnect but i tried doing it woithout as i was on my own. after a 20 secs of cranking she fired up, ran lumpy but after a few mins of gentle reving she smoothed out and is now running fine.
cheers guy

Glad to hear that you've sorted it. So it was the diaphragms in the priming pump after all.
'Surprised that someone didn't mention that....
