=====================================================================

Went for test drive in one of these today.

First impression was that I have never seen a car this size before. Imposing? Astounding more like. The second impression, after I sat in it was that I have never sat in a car this size before. A quick fiddle with the seat and mirror and I was comfortable. Find the handbrake lever and away we went, to a third impression, that I have never driven a car this big before.

Once on the move, though, the size seemed to morph into solidity. I had the feeling that if I hit a bus it would certainly be the bus that came off worse. Handling was fine in general. Unfortunately, it was a model with the silly big wheels, small tyres that seem to be the fashion these days. The choppiness they induced was a bit irritating, but that apart, it was a pleasant drive.

On the motorway and the car was in its element. Breezing along at...70...was effortless and noise free. Onto country roads, and while I wouldn't want to race anyone in it, it was surprisingly easy to drive.

I think that I will have one of these. I'll have the diesel - it's faster and more economical, so why wouldn't I? With a 6 month waiting list, though, I'm not expecting a big discount, so maybe I'll nurse the Omega on for another year or two and get a 300C after they have depreciated a little (or a lot, who can tell?).

I will finish by saying that if you want a rear-wheel limo, you could do a lot worse than to take a look at a 300C. My biggest worry is that at least one professional footballer (if Southampton FC players count) has one. Could I live with that image?

Just been given a delivery date of 12th April for my CRD version and have started the 'countdown'. You are right about the resemblance to the Rover P5 Commerdriver, thats one of the unique aspects about the 300C...it has the ability to be brash American 'bling' or sedate British exec depending on what mods etc you carry out.

My T reg Vectra 2litre TDi will not start but will turn over. The day before it was running fine. Does this model have a collision/inertia switch?
The car has never played up before and the alarm/immobilizer has been working as it should. There are no MIL warning lights etc showing either.
Any ideas?

Many thanks in advance.

If I push the pedal down the noise dissapears , but................also when I slightly push the gear lever forward or back without using the clutch the noise dissapears . This cant be thrust bearing can it ? Would it be the gear shafts inside rattling ? Read more

How Does the Dual Mass Flywheel work.
My 54 plate VW Golf TDi has been juddering when accelerating in 3rd gear with the engine warm since i brought it a month ago and Volkswagen yesterday have diagnosed it as clutch judder or could be the dual mass flywheel but won't know for certain till the gearbox is out.
If it is the dual mass flywheel do i demand them to change the clutch at the same time or just go with the flow??
Has anyone else experienced this problem with their Tdi Golf and what was done to fix it? Read more

They're available seperately, or as a kit. Just like you can buy a cambelt, or a cambelt kit containing tensioners etc.

George Orwell predicted this sort of thing in 1948.

L'escargot,
We are probably about the same age judging from the length of time you have been driving(unless you started under age!). My philosophy is the same as yours, don't break the eleventh commandment. In all honesty, can you really see the incompetent morons we have in charge now getting this sort of system up, running and competantly administered before we hang up our driving gloves? (hopefully at a very old age!)

I want to install a child seat on the front seat and need to disable the related airbag. Is there an easy way to achieve it ? Read more

Pay even more money, buy the MB kiddie seat which has a transponder inside it to immobilise the airbag. On the other hand, if this vehicle is out of warranty you might be wise to jump out of the MB money pit and sell it. (See other A-class threads here).

My girlfriend is thinking of buying a used Suzuki Jimny. Has anyone got any information on things to look out for or any common problems? Are they economical to run/expensive to fix? Read more

Without sounding like a complete novice which i am ,I need information how to remove spark plugs from my Astra 1.6 automatic. The HT leads come from a rectangular box attached to the top of engine. The actual leads are a black corrugated plastic covered.Where they attach to the top of the spark plug there is a concertina like shaped drum.Ive looked in the Haynes manual but it does not refer to this type.I dont really want to start pulling anything out incase i do damage.Ive done 32000miles .They are due out at 40000miles .Can anyone help please.

Ruperts Trooper

All Astras, from '98-on have "direct ignition" which means no conventional coil or distributor. This includes both 1.6 versions, 8v and 16v. Vauxhalls recommended change interval is 40,000 miles or 4 years.

On the 1.6 16v engine the ignition pack lies along the top of the engine between the two halves of the camshaft housing. The pack fits directly on top of the spark plugs so removal of the ignition pack is necessary. Once visible the plugs can be removed in the same way as the 8v but make sure the correct plugs are fitted.

Quick google reveals that ID = Identity Document. As in "can
i see your ID". Sounds American as PU wrote.

That being the case, "can I see your ID" makes sense, whereas "can I see your ID card" doesn't.
