How long do points for speeding stay on your licence for?

Before you say 3 years I want evidence!

There is no mention in the Highway Code
and insurance companies want to know of any points in the last FIVE years! Read more

Dalglish

Is it 3 / 4 years after the date of the offence or after the date of conviction?
My 3 points show on my licence from the date of offence. But then, there was no conviction

dulwich -
click the two links provided above by lescargot and andy bairsto.
then look for the three categories -
11 years from date of conviction if the offence is: ....
four years from date of conviction if the offence is: ....
four years from the date of offence in all other cases. ...

as for the point made by mapmaker:
[>> On seeing a long list of points dating back ten years or more (but non current) he told my friend to send his
licence off to get a new, clean one back as most policemen would give somebody with a record like that a ticket.]

i know someone who has just a couple of endorsements going back more than 15 years. he thinks that it positively helps to keep them on as it demonstrates that he has reformed his driving behaviour since those points so many years ago.

Hi.

I've just bought a used car from a local dealer, who gave me the complete V5 certificate to send off for new registration. Unfortunately though, I've just noticed today that the previous owner hasn't signed or dated the previouse "registered keeper" section - so I have the entire V5 with no signatures at all.
I'm certain the car isn't stolen or anything, but how do I go about registering the car as mine without the previous owner's signature?? Read more

Just send it off with it blank if your'e worried about it - they never take much notice. The dealers name will not be anywhere on the V5 - it is not meant to be. Providing the dealer sent off the yellow (dealer) section to the DVLA so they have the car recorded as "in the trade" they will issue the new V5 quickly whether signed or not.

My Mother in law has a VW Golf which has just started showing the emissions warning light. The car has just had a new exhaust as the catalytic converter was apparently 'shot' and the warning light only appeared after this was done.

Naturally she is worried has to whether the car is going to let her down, particularly if she has any of the Grandchildren in it.

The garage that did this have run a full diagnostic on the car and maintain there's nothing wrong with the car.

She's taken it to VW, who have also run a full diagnostic on the car and they confirm that all is well.

What's the purpose of this light, is it to signify that there's something wrong with the car or simply to indicate the car may be contributing to the Planets demise more than usual?!

Thanks in advance,

CWE. Read more

My wife has a 56 Reg Golf Plus TDI 105 Luna and we have the same problem.

We took it to our local independent VW specialist in Leeds who diagnosed a faulty EGR valve when he ran the diagnostics. This was replaced (about £150) but the light came back on the next day. Back to the garage who ran the software again....

Could anyone point me to any guide which shows which wheels will fit which car? i.e. Peugeot wheels fit citroens (obviously) and ford. Renault fit BMW and (I think) VW.

Any help would be appreciated!

I recently bought a used Vauxhall Astra and after some work involving disconnecting the battery, I needed to re code the radio. Using the code I got with the vehicle, I tried four times without success to re activate the radio. After some digging around, I found the set had been upgraded from a CAR 400 to a CDR 500. You guessed it I was using the wrong code. I managed to find the correct code but I have a problem.
When I switch the radio on it reads SAFE. I switch it off and back on holding AS button down at the same time. The screen reads 6 SAFE. I have successfully entered a code (although the wrong one) four times previously .

I understand there is a time out period to wait before another code can be entered. The problem is I have ran the car for periods of over 30 minutes at a time with the radio switched on but the 6 SAFE will not change to
6 - - - - as it should. I believe the waiting period should be at the most 20 minutes.

Can anybody help me out please. I should have 10 attempts before the set is useless.

Many thanks in advance Read more

and....they done have any sensor wires on them so they arnt registering any sort of fault cuase theres no wire!!!!

so do they rears have any sensors???
if not.what is causing the light to come on then back off then back on. etc etc

In a road vehicle, it's the area under the torque graph which matters most, not the peak torque which is best for generators and electrodiesel trains.

Can anyone advise me how to achieve smooth silent windscreen wipers? I have a Honda CRV and have been plagued by noisy wipers for years. I even fitted new Honda wiper blades, but still they judder noisily across the screen. It was the same with my last car - a Vauxhall Cavalier. And yet, when I drive hire cars, which I do sometimes, their wipers always seem to be smooth and silent.

Many thanks to all who replied to my query - all the responses were very helpful. I've decided that I'll first of all replace my wiper blades with those which were 'best buy' in the Auto Express test (the 'Car Parts Direct' boxed-set ) and if that doesn't work, I'll try twisting the wiper blade arms slightly. Thanks again to all of you. ArchieWW

I heard that parking is free in central London on a Sunday, even where there are parking meters. Is this the case? I fancy going to the Science Museum and thought I could park in Queen's Gate, South Kensington. Read more

Recently I went to the Natural History Museum on a Saturday, parking a couple of hundred yards away to the south west. The parking charges stop at 1pm, so I only had to pay for 2 hours as I arrived at 11. Just check it is not a residents bay. Was not too bad at all, with plenty of free bays and only a few pounds. Will visit the Science Museum within the next few months.

We have had our Mazda 5 for 8 months now and it is mostly brilliant. Drives well, flexible interior works great and the sliding rear doors are fantastic when getting kids out of car seats in tight car park spaces. The only two quibbles with the car are the fairly minor one of the gearing in 5th which makes me look for a 6th gear to change up to on the motorway, but given the fact that the rest of the car is so good I can live with it. The 'characteristic' I am having trouble dealing with though, is the suspensions noise on an bumpy road at a reasonable speed or when negotiating speed bumps at walking pace. There is a noticeable graunching sound from the suspension which is disconcerting. I noticed on the WhatCar owners reviews of this car that other drivers have the same fault and on a forum located in North America that some owners have had suspension bushes replaced and suggested that Mazda were aware of the fault. Before I book it in to the dealer, I'd be interested to know if anyone else had this problem and how did the dealer resolve it.

Hi! The same problem with my 2007 mazda 5sports diesel, noise at the front, found out two wishbone bush badly worn(rubber). Changed it two weeks ago but now noticed noise again, took it to garage and found anti roll bar D-Bush a bit squeaky(moving), so mechanic said need to changed both. Rear Shock absorber changed as well, both.. And tyre rear near side inside badly worn... Read lots of reviews about mazda 5, either europe or US, the same problem... Any idea if tracking and wheel alignment will help tyre wearing???
