I'm looking for a second hand car. Lots of dealers advertise "12 months free MOT" for their cars.

One car was advertised as MOT until Feb 2017. It also was advertised as being sold with 12 months MOT.... Read more

When my brother reently sold his previous car I suggested he should get a new MOT for it. There's something magical about a car with a 12 month MOT with car buyers!

As he's at work it became my job to take it in to the garage to be tested. I think the previous MOT still had about 6 months to run. Anyway, I drove the car up to the garage and handed the keys over. As the garage is very close to my house I walked back home for a cup of tea. Shortly afterwards the garage telephoned my brother to ask why he was having the car MOT tested, since, when they logged the car in to the DVLA computer, it obviously showed it still had a current MOT. He obviously explained he was selling the vehicle and thought a 12 month MOT would be a desireable selling point!...

Not going to help much but the mark 2 Aygo has solved every one of those problems. It's a damn good machine.

I'm thinking about a new car and seen some ex police BMWs that are cheap - Does anyone have any experience in running one?

The adverts all say motorway miles, but I'm sure they get properly used..... Read more

Not going to name and shame but there's a place up North that sells ex police cars and has a pretty poor reputation.

Gibbo is that the place that advertises VED rates being much lower on ex police cars than would otherwise be in the top band if civilian cars....

Hi

I tried to enter a 7 digit postcde on my built in sat nav, and found that it would apparently only accept the first 4 digits, after which the keypad 'greyed out'. The manual merely says click on 'postcode' but gives no further details.... Read more

Can anyone help solve this issue!

I have recently purchased a Fiat 500 sport on a '59 plate. The car as started with a mis-fire issue on number 2 cylinder.

I've tried 2 different brands of coil packs, changed all the plug leads, new plugs, serviced the car new oil and sent the ecu away to be checked out which came back ok.

But still i've got this mis firs problem which causes the ecu light to come on and the error is misfire cylinder 2. Read more

bought it from Lidl -Powerfix brand - it will go down a 10 mm plughole and has a little mirror to look back at the valves.

Sounds the same as the Electrician I know. Perfectly acceptable for most jobs. the hire shop though has a super dooper professional job, which is absolutely superb and probably OTT for most applications.

USB endoscopes can be had off the Bay from China from about £30.

Hi,

I bought a very nice and tidy Audi A3 four months ago from a dealer in Essex. It had only done 82,000 miles which was nice and low for the year and it was obviously well cared for. For peice of mind I asked for and payed extra to have a new cambelt done and full service carried out.... Read more

Loads of belts fail early John in fact it was so common on Alfa Twin Sparks and Renault 1.5 DCi’s (to name just two) that they had to cut the intervals. Don’t scrimp on maintenance. The belt isn’t the main factor in any failure (though you cannot fully assess its condition just by looking at it in place) it’s the tensioner or tensioners and often the water pump pulley depending on design which fail and throw the belt.

The problem here is that a dodgy dealer has done the job on the cheap without using the appropriate quality parts, technical knowledge and probably has scrimped by changing nothing more than the belt itself initially.

If you buy a car from a non-franchise dealer that is due or overdue a belt change then negotiate a discount with this in mind (don’t expect the full cost off) then book it in with your nearest main dealer or genuine specialist to be done properly. VW for example offer a 5yr guarantee on belt changes done by their dealers using VW parts and it cost me only £30 more than a local backstreet garage quoted using non-VW parts when I had it done on my Polo last year.
