I am seeking the wisdom of fellow forum members on a query I cannot satisfy myself on the best answer, so here goes:
Beginning of March I took delivery of a new Vauxhall Mokka supplied on the Motability scheme (I falling apart at the seams), I have had an electric hoist fitted to assist with loading/unloading my mobility scooter.... Read more
What is the actual percentage allowed today for overspeeding when passing a Speed camera no matter whether fixed or mobile.
It used to be 10% +2mph of whatever speed limit is in force and then read somewhere that its now 3% of whatever speed limit is in force.... Read more
Typical journalists, can't even read their own table properly.
They say "most police forces will not prosecute until you’re driving at more than 46mph in a 40mph zone, for example, or 79mph in a 70mph zone" when those are actually the minimum speeds at which you can normally expect to be prosecuted/fined.

Bruce, you've repeated the question posted many years back, and there are some answers above. Do you have a new one?
I am thinking of buying this car but it has done 85000 miles the high miles is putting me off it has full service history and is £5500 do you think I should stay clear ? It is a 2012 thanks

A friend of ours has a Bmax with the ecoboost, it seems ok as a passenger but, I've never driven it to find out how it feels from a drivers impression.......
My parents have a 1.0 Fiesta Ecoboost. It is a fine car, although it has taken a bit of getting used to. There is no torque at all below approx 1500 to 2000 rpm, basically until the turbo spools up. It's also rougher, in typical 3 cylinder fashion. Once moving it's pretty quick but not as smooth as a 4, particularly at lower revs. So moving off in it requires a different approach if one is used to bigger, torquey engines, even their previous Fiesta a 1.4 petrol was noticeably easier to launch. It explains why this engine in a heavier car is causing clutch problems, after driving it for myself and therein lies the problem I feel, it's fine in a small light car but struggles to overcome initial inertia in a heavier car. It is a technically interesting engine but doesn't really offer any significant benefits in the real world over a bigger atmo engine. I suspect that they will not stand abuse, missed oil changes and poor servicing very well in the hands of owners with no knowledge or interest in what they're driving. ...
I'd appreciate any thoughts on how to decide when a car is no longer worth repairing and would be better scrapped or sold for 'spares or repair'.
The vehicle in question is a 2003 Forester non-turbo with 93k miles. Looking on ebay, it might be worth £800 to a grand as a going concern?... Read more
Gordonbennet was correct. Your old car is still worth the price of new one to replace it. I like to keep mine going and only a really catastrophic failure would se me dispose of it. A £500 repair on a basically good car which would make it last a least another year is cheap motoring really.

The dreaded ping sound and the persistent red battery warning light tells me its time to replace the battery. The info on the current battery is:

Not to worry. Now you have plenty of advice for when you do need to replace the battery!
LOL!!! Good one. But yes, quite right.
So I was driving Ford Transit from a hire company, went into a Tesco carpark which had a max height yellow barrier, goal post type thing. Max height said 2.5m I knew the van was around that so got out and checked the van wouldn't hit the barrier and it was fine, no trouble getting under the barrier. On exitting the carpark however I hit an overhang, you had to go down a slope and the overhang is part of the upper level of the carpark. Now there was no warning at the overhang.

Hello one and all,
Questions posted are mostly irrelevant, If there was a height indicated in the driving area that is legally binding for the driver, esp so if it is the one put there by the vehicle manufacturer as opposed to the ones you can buy yourself....
2007 Nissan Qashqai 1.5 DCI
For the longest time the wifes 2007 Nissan Qashqai 1.5 DCI has been going through alot of oil. Needs filled up at the very least once a month. So it was in for a service the other day and I told the mechanic, independent, to give it the once over and let me know if there are any problems.... Read more
I was being generous with the 1,000 miles and what about twice some months.
Also, oil consumption aside, has anyone any ideas on the piston rings I mentioned?...
Hi Guys, first post.
I've read around similar problems on the forum along with other places but cannot conclude with myself what the problem is.
Scenario;
A few weeks ago my car started to sound an internal alarm which isnt very loud and cannot be heard from the outside, this happens when I turned on the ignition and when I turned the ignition off.
at first it sounds quite fast, high-low-high-low-high-low-high-low and repeated for approximately 10 seconds, every now and then I would have trouble turning the engine over, after waiting for a few seconds and trying again, it would turn over and I would be on my way, the starting failure was quite intermittent, few and far between.
This has now changed, 4 days ago the alarm changed from it speedy noise to a slower paces hiiiiiiigh-loooooooow etc which goes for approx 10 seconds.
The car now refuses to start, I can use the Radio/lights/wipers everything, it all feels like it is working fine, but it will not start, I am wondering if the power sounder battery being low would cease the car from starting?
when I turn the ignition, I can hear a faint click but nothing after it, which leads me on to either;
The battery not having enough power to kick it.
Bad earth.
Faulty Starter motor.
Faulty Transponder in the key.
Faulty Ignition Barrel?.
I've had a charger pack thing on the battery for 10 mins but this did not seem to do anything.
one thing I have noticed is that when my lights are off, the dash lights are quite bright, if I put on my side lights/beams then do dim a bit, but I do not feel its significant dimming.
Also, it is an automatic, can this be towed a mile or 2 safely?
I know jack about cars but I have a good understanding of what to look for, unless it is something not easily found!
Any help would be so very appreciated!
Thanks! Read more
Glad you got it sorted, £96 sounds reasonable, 1.5 hours labour plus a few quid for parts seems fine
Ah good, he was highly recommended by a friend but I was unsure, the mechanic is quite a character, he is really like a hillbillycowboy looking guy who sells moonshine from the back of the garage lol.
and he laughs like one too... was brilliant, ill be using him from now on lol.
hi is there anyway to do a check to see if a car has been leased , as im looking at buying a car but wouldnt want a car thats been leased as in general people wouldnt look after and drive the car as they would if they owned it. Read more
Ex company lease and ex hire cars are usually the safest bet in my opinion for a 'nearly new' used car. This is simply because all are sold because they have either reached a pre-defined mileage or aren't needed any more.
A fairly large chunk of the privately owned trade-ins of this age are being traded in because there is some kind of niggly fault or have been in an accident and repaired....
I must admit never hearing about manufacturers only making tyre pressure recommendations only for 'comfort' and 'economy' - whilst lower pressures will be a bit more comfortable (for the same load) as higher pressures, surely the recommended tyre pressure (+/- 10%) should only be related to the load carried on each axle and to ensure even contact/wear over all tyres, to ensure the best/safest possible handling and longevity of the tyres?
