Can anyone help solve this issue!

I have recently purchased a Fiat 500 sport on a '59 plate. The car as started with a mis-fire issue on number 2 cylinder.

I've tried 2 different brands of coil packs, changed all the plug leads, new plugs, serviced the car new oil and sent the ecu away to be checked out which came back ok.

But still i've got this mis firs problem which causes the ecu light to come on and the error is misfire cylinder 2.

Have you done a compression test. If so what where the results. Regards Peter

Hi Peter

I've had the compression test done, the results are good compression whilst cold, then low compression on cylinder 2 when warmed up. I've also had the endoscope done and there's carbon build up on the valves of carbon.

Start running it exclusively on Shell VPower. Doing so on my Saab cleaned almost ALL the carbon build up inside 10,000 miles. Also try an application of 10K Boost – I’m not normally a fan of any such “tricks” but this worked for me on a low mileage OAP owned car I bought for the wife a few years ago by reducing the carbon to an acceptable level. Again, a few 000 miles on Vpower and she was fine.

Have you got good compression on the cylinder that's misfiring? Have you got a good HT spark? And is the fuel injector switching and injecting fuel? One of these is at fault.

Hhhmmm!! I see you’ve embarked on a process of “diagnosis by guesswork” as I call it. Not a fan. There’s a saying: “if you haven’t found the fault yet, then you haven’t done enough testing”.

Having said that, giving a car a full service can only be a good thing, so in this instance it’s not really wasted effort.

Have you checked all electrical connections and checked all harnessing for any signs of damage?

Have you checked you’re getting a nice fat spark at the plugs?

Have you had the ETCs read?

Try swapping #2 and #3 injectors round and see if the misfire follows the injector (or not)

Carry out a compression test, cold and hot, dry and wet.

Have a look at the combustion chambers to see if it’s coked up (look down the plug holes – use an endoscope)

Check the cleanliness of the throttle body and butterfly.

Have you tried a different brand of fuel, including Super?

Also is the misfire under certain conditions or all the time?

How many people have got a endoscope or borescope to hand?

Near me my local hire shop has one along with one plumber and also two electricians I know. A local garage also has one and offer the service of looking for you. Essential equipment I’d say.

I've got one - bought it from Lidl -Powerfix brand - it will go down a 10 mm plughole and has a little mirror to look back at the valves. It cost about £35.

Sounds the same as the Electrician I know. Perfectly acceptable for most jobs. the hire shop though has a super dooper professional job, which is absolutely superb and probably OTT for most applications.

USB endoscopes can be had off the Bay from China from about £30.
