Hello all, [ 2.0L 16v ecotec- auto 1994 ]
found oil in my spark plug holes the other day, car was running a little sluggish. I believe it's the cam cover gasket gone, so I'm about to replace it. I've got the gasket, sealant rings for the bolt-holes & blue sealant.
Can anyone advise me where exactly the sealant goes please? A link to a known diagram would be brill.
Obviously I've done some searching, but can't really find a lot.
Hoping to do it tomorrow, if weather stays ok.
{{ Also, any advice on the best way to clean out the crankcase breather. Seems to be bolted on behind the exhaust manifold, so I don't think I can remove it. I think this maybe was why the gasket went }}
Many thanks,

Thanks for that,
managed to find a few posts too. I'd been searching via the very top search bar ' site search ' , instead of forum search.

Picture the scene - motorway, quiet, dusk - I'm heading down it at a moderate pace until I near the end of it when I slow down a little...then a little more.....then a little more and happen upon an 06 plate Honda Jazz going too slow - so I deftly overtake him and pull back in perfectly, even if I do say so myself. Exit the motorway onto the roundabout and then up the sliproad to a busy (ish) road.
The sllproad in question (I'm not entirely sure it's technically a sliproad as it's two way but has the motorway restrictions on so we'll call it one for now) terminates (and begins - depending on which way you're driving), with a traffic light controlled junction onto the main road. Two lanes to exit the sliproad - left only and right only controlled by the same traffic light.
So I pull up to turn right just as the lights turn to red. I then begin whistling a tune I've been working on - I'll show you someone if ever I see you - and guess who's pulling up alongside to turn left - our friend Mr Slow Jazz. Anyway - he just about draws level with me just as the lights for traffic using the main road have turned to red but he doesn't stop, doesn't look, and just plows on turning left...indicating. About 5 seconds later, our lights turn green which should show you how much of a risk he took.
Madness! He wasn't an old gent - around late fifties - early sixties - and probably the most curteous red light jumper I've ever seen but it still amazes me at what you see on the roads.
Sorry if this post was something of an anticlimax but I had to tell someone so why not you?

The tales of people driving cars got me reminiscing about the clutch failure in my old mini - 1275GT clubman.I was just 19. It had a loud stereo (I fitted it), bucket seats, 1310 engine, freeflow exhaust and K&N with a stub stack. After dyno tuning it went like hell and boy did I enjoy it. But I got a job with a van that meant I was away from home more and more, so when driving it one weekend and the clutch wouldn't disengage, my then girlfriend ended up pushing it to start it then jumping in whilst moving (in a very short skirt and heels!) I decided it had to go. The chump I sold it to wrote it off in 2 weeks... Even more extraordinary was that this was at a roundabout junction on the A61 in Chesterfield at the start of the bypass.
Maybe it's the image of the ex not car that's got me thinking....

Evening all.
I, as someone else's signature states about him or herself, read often but post rarely (or something to that effect anyway).
In the Telegraph motoring, in HJ's FAQs and I think in the Back Room, Primo plc have been mentioned as offering car insurances policies designed for drivers like me searching for reasonable quotes at renewal time.
I have two policies running at the moment:
- One has 8 years no claims discount with my sister as the main driver and me as the policy holder;
- One has three years no claims discount and has me as both the main driver and policy holder.
My folks are also named on both policies.
I would like to consolidate this situation somewhat and, if possible, end up with one policy in my sister's name for the car she is the main driver of, and one in my name for the car which I am the main driver of. And I would like to try to get the maximum NGD on both policies.
What are the chances of this being possible and which companies should I approach bearing in mind that Primo when called today weren't able to help? They would have been able to in the past but due to some recent changes are now not able to.
Any help the backroom could offer would be appreciated.
Paul
P.S. All drivers over twenty-five except for my 24yo sister.

I examined the front brakes on my car and found the front offside outer pad very thin, the other three pads are still thick.
The defective pad being on the outside is not operated by the hydraulic piston but by the stub arms. Why should that one pad wear heavily when its mate is still in good fettle? The piston moved freely in its bore.
Can anyone enlighten me, in the simplest of terms.
Thank you. Read more
Why should that one pad wear heavily when its mate is still in good fettle?
Siezed caliper? The pad on the piston side moves back by the action of the piston retracting slightly, but the pad on the other side of the disc cannot.
My gf's Fiesta Zetec was just out of warranty when the car started running badly and the engine management light came on. Had it towed to Dagenham Motors in Byfleet who did a reasonable job and changed the coil. Today, a couple of months later, the light is back on but no apparent misfiring or poor running this time.
In fear of the car developing large bills at a Ford main agent, can anyone recommend an independant local to Woking/Weybridge that would be able to plug in and diagnose the reason for the light again or are we better off going back to DM?

Bad news, engine management light back on again with slight misfire. Back to Dagenham Motors. Patience wearing a little with the car and this repeated niggle.
Anyone else seen this type of problem with the Fiesta?
hi,
does anyone know much about ecu flashers?
i have been browsing google on info about theses remapping flashers and was wondering if anyone here has used one,or has any reccomendations on which one to purchase?
i would like to remap my vehicles ecu,and be able to revert it to standard when needed.
i have a spare windows laptop with serial and usb ports for use with the flasher. Read more

Some of these "KWP 2000 flashing" and "re-mapping" CDs [to fundamentally alter your ECU's fuelling - now appearing like a pox on e-bay] can cost upwards of a whole £7.99.
For that sort of money they must be truly awesome..... I'm sure that the sellers have spent millions developing and testing the modified cartography to make sure that their products won't destroy your engine - haven't they?
Now that my Astra is run in, at just over 5000 miles, it has developed a brief vibration patch, which occurs when I move off, at about 1000-1200 revs, forward or reverse. The car is a 1.6 petrol, one year old, and is very smooth at all other times. I have heard of clutch judder but I don't think it is this, as the patch is quite brief. It doesn't seem to affect anything, and I wonder if any others do this. Read more
I've just invented biodegradeable road signs, henceforth brs 'cos I don't think I can type it again. If anyone would like to manufacture them, you can have the idea.
You know the scene, sign ahead "new road layout", "new traffic lights" or that old favourite "Road works". Two years later they're still there. So with brs - problem solved! They come in 2 varieties, 6 month and 12 month life span. If you need longer than that you can either replace them when needed or just not bother. After all - you are looking where you're going?

A similar idea is used for approaches to roundabouts, with the
slight bulge on each strip creating a warning click, click, click
as you pass over them.
Sounds very much like the French Bandes Rugueses

BMW Hams Hall puts the vroom in your Beamer. The 103,000-sq.-meter plant produces four-cylinder petrol engines that are later installed in BMW plants in Germany, South Africa, and the US. Opened for production in 2000, the plant was the first engine production facility to be built outside of Germany and Austria. It is also one of four in the UK that manufacture for BMW Group's premium brands -- BMW, Mini, and Rolls-Royce. With a capacity for 400,000 engines, BMW Hams Hall currently produces 146,000 enginess annually. A boost in demand for Mini engines could double that number by 2006
The new Mini engine is to be made there too then. Will save BMW loads not buying the South American Chrysler engines.
