February 2006
the heating on my 5 series (S reg) has just packed up. I think it might be that the fans have failed as even on max I cannot get any airflow from the fans except on front windscreen demister, and even then it is cold
The question is, does anyone know if this is likely to be an expensive repair job, or could it be quite simple? I really don't want to spend hundreds of pounds. Could it be a fuse, and is this easy the fix myself
Thanks for any advice

My brother is close to buying an ex police Volvo v70 T5 estate. He is after a strong powerful estate and the T5 would fit the bill. Are ex police cars as well maintained -and driven as sellers say? I'm talking about long distance motorway patrol vehicles- not the bashed up Peugeot 306 local car. I know theres a bit of work needed but a new shape V70 for £2500? Read more
The Community police round here have a few Priuses. Wonder whether they will be regarded as knackered nightmares when they are sold on?

didnt know about the chain driven cams obiously drawn from the

range of engines
LOL! Its a bit different to one of their bike engines!
Its an updating of their M15A engine which has been around for a few years and is (AFAIK) very well proven with no major problems. I don't know a great deal about Suzuki's but I've never heard anyone say a bad word about their reliability and quality of engineering. I noticed that in Japan they are very popular (the Swift is called the 'Cultus' over there).
I think the Swift really has the 'Mini' marketing people worried - have you seen the 'fake Mini' advert on the TV? The Swift 'out-Minis' the Mini, IMHO. I have driven a 1.5VVT and although not quite as fast as a 1.6 Mini it is more comfortable and doesn't have that horrible bouncy ride or all the squeaky trim!
My dad is having problems with his car, wondering if anyone can help with suggestions.
Car will be driving along normally and then engine cut out and the yellow "Engine diagnostic light" comes on. When he tries to restart immediately, engine will turn over but not start. Leave it for a couple of minutes and it will start ok.
Took it to his local Peugeot independent who hooked it up to computer and it came up with an error of an injector fault. One injector was found to be faulty and repaired. However problem still persists although less frequent. When hooked to computer now it shows an error of intermittent diesel pressure fault.
Car is going back into garage on Monday, anyone any ideas as to what this might be?? Read more
Screwloose, I honestly don't know, just got this second hand info from my dad. I know the first garage he had been to had already done some work but not sure what.
I will try and find out though?
Well
As I happened to be toodling around the unwashed masses of the East Midlands I dropped in to an Aldi to procure this weeks cheap Angle Grinder and there I was given next weeks special offer leaflet.

I was pulling up to an address and overshot by one house. I reversed back along the kerb to the correct house, which was on the corner of the street and was hit on my back right side bumper by a car that came around the corner. According to my insurer I am liable even though there was no car when I looked in my rear-view mirror. Does anyone think I can get them to change their mind and if so, how? Read more
This reads as though you looked in your mirror, saw it was clear, then reversed without looking again - is that correct?
You ought to have been keeping a look out for anything else at all times so you could stop immediately. I think a crucial thing here is, where you moving when the crash occured? Ideally (for you) you should have been stopped. I imagine that the other driver would have come to the junction, glanced right, and then driven around the corner straight into you - a common accident, especially serious where someone is overtaking on the 'main' road.
What's the legality of parking on the corner anyway - it's clearly unwise, but it is only illegal at night when parked without lights?
According to a What Car journalist quoted on the radio (paraphrased).
"A hosepipe ban would mean that people wouldn't able to clean their cars, meaning (shock) the lights will get dirty and (horror) the numberplates would be obscured."
Normally I let stupid comments like this go over my head, and I'm normally given to ranting about things i see or hear out and about, after all that's life, but this guy is a motoring journalist and that lends some creditability to his comments to the public. In my view it means that he should be responsible with what he says and what is attributed to him.
No doubt some members of the public will now think that it's ok not to wash their cars because that bloke on the radio said a hosepipe would lead to this and he was a motoring journalist, so he must be right.
Even I, who puts his car through a car wash once every six months if it's lucky, am capable of getting a bucket and sponge and cleaning the vital bits.
Possible overreaction on my part, but i really couldn't believe my ears.
Rant over. Read more
You mean you can afford a bucket.
Well, the one I fixed had no resistor pack. Like "elec & a/c doctor" (above) has said, it had an ECU (control module) which seemed to consist of various electronic components and a power transistor. Is that what you're talking about?
I don't think any climate-control type systems would have a resistor pack, you only normally get them where there is a multi-position mechanical switch. At least that's where I've seen them, not on climate control systems.
