Hi all.
My 406 HDi 90 (02, 90k) has recently developed the following symptoms. I will take the car back to the dealer as it is still under warranty, but they are particularly useless (still trying to fix the satnav cd drive) so I'd like some suggestions about what the problem could be.
(i) A rattling noise. I used to have a box of drinking glasses in the boot, and it sounds like those rattling. It is particularly noticeable after a cold start, and can usually be produced by holding the engine speed at about 1500rpm.
(ii) Holding the engine speed at 1500rpm, the needle wobbles noticably.
(iii) The engine sounds louder and "growls" more.
(iv) Loss of torque at very low rpm. It used to be happy down to 1100 but now "chugs" from about 1300.
(v) Poor economy. I always measure brim-to-brim and find that the computer is consistently under-reads by 8mpg (the dealer could not fix this shocking inaccuracy either). The last fill indicated -3mpg from normal, the computer now reads -6mpg from normal.
Thanks.

I would check out your catalytic converter - glass rattling tinkling noises sounds to me like the innards have shattered and blocked the exhaust.
The resultant back pressure could be causing the sluggishness,
You say the engine is noisier and this also could be caused by cat failure.
Cant see my mondeo doing this!!

The forces on that extended suspension (and its mountings) doesn't bear thinking about!
I think i have just put a little too much in. It now sits just above the max mark.

Ordered a new Citroen C4 via one of the brokers mentioned by HJ. The car was delivered by Citroen to a Citroen dealer on Wednesday 23rd. The car is prepped by the dealer and should be delivered to my home. However, the dealer has told the broker that they can't issue a registration number until Thursday or Friday next week. This means I can't get my insurance sorted out and won't get delivery of the vehicle until the following Monday or even Tuesday. That is almost 2 weeks from delivery to dealer.
I think the delaer is messing the broker about. I am sure that the dealer can pick from a list of registration numbers.
Can only assume that the dealer is not bothered about upsetting the broker, or me the customer, who chose to get over £4k discount rather than the paltry discount offered by main dealers.

Update 28/11/05
Have discovered I have been fed a large pork pie smothered in BS sauce.
Having been told by the broker that the car was indeed delivered on Wednesday last week and that the dealer was dragging feet over the issue of the registration number.....I have now been told that the car is actually still in Calais and will not be shipped until Wednesday next week. It will take a further week to get delivery of the car.
To say that I am cheesed off would be an understatement. Seriously considering asking for deposit back and going elsewhere. Don't mind being told the truth and being kept informed along the way.
I detest the idea that I am being lied to when I am a customer to the tune of just a tad over 12 grand.
Bought my accord tourer in September. Why do Honda insist on supplying the ridiculous puncture repair kit? The boot is massive as it is, the extra tray underneath the boot floor doesn,t give you much extra room anyway. I was not happy at the thought of being stuck by the roadside struggling with foam and compressors, so bit the bullet and bought a space saver spare. When I collected it I asked the dealer if he would do a part swap for my unused kit, including the moulding for the boot. He said it would be useless to him because no one wants them! Surely the cost price of space saver spare would be lower than the compressor, tool kit, foam kit etc you get instead? Other than that, the car is superb - quick, quiet, reliable, superb build. Glad I went for the 17" alloys though.
let me be the last to let you down.... Read more
There was a report on Radio 5 Live yesterday about a scam in the Manchester area, it is apparently getting quite common.
They interviewed a driver who had been following another car onto a roundabout with no other traffic in sight, the other car suddenly braked hard and the driver lightly bumped the back of it. The woman passenger feined a whiplash injury, details were exchanged etc. 5 mins later the driver saw the other car in a retail park, followed the couple into a sports shop and photographed the woman easiliy pulling sweatshirts on and off over her head. 24 hours later he had a solicitors letter claiming whiplash, he let his insurers have the photo evidence plus details of an independant witness who saw the 'accident', IIRC the report said the other parties were prosecuted.
I think I might have been a victim of a similar situation a few years ago, I followed a van across some traffic lights that were on green, the driver slammed his brakes on, I bumped him, my number plate was not even cracked though the rear door of the van was dented. The van driver seemed fit as a fiddle, he actually apologised saying he stopped suddenly because he thought the lights might have been on red, I too received a solicitors letter claiming injury, as I expected the claim went against me, it included a a couple of grand in medical expences and loss of earnings.
In my case I think the accident was perhaps genuine though the subsequent claim was a reflection on the "where there's a blame there's a claim" culture that exists today.

Forgot to add that a friend of mine is a doctor who does medico-legal stuff and is always investigating supossed whiplash injuries. Given that they make up only X% of the population, they are about 3X% of his clients......

Espada III - well if you have a family and need a Lamborghini, what else do you drive?
The Opel Combo van has a problem - the pipes serving the PAS pump have corroded and therefore fluid has run out.
Mechanic has checked it out and said OK to drive - but not for long distances.
My question is - if its ok to drive for short trips, why not longer trips? I realise steering will be alot heavier, but is that all? Read more
thanks for the number Cyd.
It is the pump that has been disengaged and the pipes disconnected, so that is how I can be sure that the pump will not run dry.
I will call the number you have given though and hopefully he will be able to get us some more info.
Hi all,
I've just returned from my trip to South West Cork - very good time was had, especially enjoyed the driving :-)
I rented a car which when I collected was a brand new Nissan Almera Saloon - very comfortable drive, althouhg the ride was a tad hard for some of the roads. On the small widing roads round the coast it handled superbly.
One thing that I wasn't sure about, and wanted to ask about, was - is it normal for the headlights on this model to not really illuminate the road much past a few metres, and not really to the side? I am ashamed to say, but I had to resort to using the front fog lights for the night driving as they lit up the roads brilliantly. (I did turn the headlight adjustment button to the max but even this didn't help)
Just after others opinions on this. Read more
"where excess of plastic in few places once heated by halogen bulbs would melt forcing mirror surface to change shape in the same time."
I wonder how common that is, now that headlights are almost universally made of metallised plastic? 100 Watts of lighting generates a fair bit of heat (about 99W!), which has to be dissipated somehow...
Does anyone know of a good independent Subaru specialist that can service my Forester in the Bournemouth area? Read more
