My daughters 1992 1.1 carburettor AX has become a reluctant starter and when running initial pickup is hesitant. We have the service history for this 56K miles car and this problem has occured several times. Any advice would be welcomed.

I think you have a manual choke carburettor fitted to it, I would start with checking the choke cable/mechanism for correct movement.

I have checked the choke mechanism everything appears o.k. here. I've taken out and cleaned the idler jet. It didn't appear blocked or dirty. The spark plugs have also been changed. I forgot to mention the car is inclined to cut out occasionally. I wonder if a good clean of the carb is called for and if service kits are still available for this vehicle.

I only have the manual for a Pugeot 106 here, same powerplant in principle but carb/settings may be different.
It may be worth checking/cleaning ht leads etc. The Pugeout manual shows july 1992 as the changeover time from distributor to ecu ignition. In both cases, check/clean the coil connections and if you have a distributor fitted, the cap, inside and out, and the rotor arm may be suspect.
They tend to age, and low milage doesn't mean it isn't past its best.

Couldnt have put it better myself !
Dont delve into the complexities of the carb till you have done the obvious and favourite cause of these sorts of problem. This car may never have had a new set of HT leads and may be crying out for them. What often happens is that the HT leads have carbon granules inside them, and over the years air gaps form causing internal arcing and loss of spark intensity at the plugs.

Thanks for your help I think you may have hit the nail on the head. Prior to changing the plugs I noticed there wasn't a very healthy spark on them but thought that was down to old plugs and a flooded engine.

she is away at the moment will post a reply when she returns.

Fantastic engine the 1.1 TU.
I would check multi plug on distributor isn't damp/dirty and ignition components.
Carb is dead simple and it's easy to take top cover off and give jets and drillings a blow out with an airline or tube on a can of WD-40. Air compensator jet on top of carb might need cleaning out.
If you have haynes manual set float height, if it's too high it causes problems. Set valve clearances and adjust mixture screw to give fastest smooth idle and it should run like a dream

I have fitted a new distributor, replacement leads and cleaned all around the ignition. Problem solved. I now have a happy daughter who is no longer giving her dad ear ache.

All help was greatly appreciated.
