Ford Mondeo (2007 - 2015)
2.0 TDCi (140ps) Titanium 5dr Hatchback
A world apart from the Mondeo of old. Truly a great car.
I bought my Mk4 Mondeo when my older Mk3 killed it's clutch. The Mk3 was a car I had many versions of, from big beefy V6 Petrols through to the 2.2 TDCi ST. My last car was a 2.0 TDCi Ghia - and it put me off Fords completely.
I was planning on getting a BMW 5 Series and dropping the Ford brand for good, but the clutch died as I was saving up and left me in a position where I needed a car. I could get a BMW 5 Series, but the age was too old and the mileage was intergalactic. This left me in a position where I settled for what I knew, and that was another Mondeo.
I picked the style and spec I wanted to my budget. I would have gone for the 2.2 TDCi but the economy wasn't as good from what I read, so settle for the 2.0 TDCi Titanium with the Sports Pack in a beautiful Red which was only available on a few models I had seen. A real head turner.
The car is massive compared to the Mk3, infact its just as big as a BMW 5 Series. The boot is huge, you can fill it to the brim with ease. The ride is smooth and comfortable, and the car eats motorways for breakfast. The engine is quieter and smoother than the Mk3, the interior is refined and better equipped, and the overall experience is amazing.
I travel over 20k miles a year in the Mondeo, and can honestly say I have enjoyed every minute behind the wheel. The drive is solid and secure, the handling is responsive and confident. Internally there is a DAB Radio and Bluetooth for Calls along with an AUX In to allow music to be played via a media device. Cruise control, Auto Headlights, Auto Wipers, Heated & Cooled Seats and AC. Its is spacious throughout, both in the front and the back.
Downsides are that the Diesel Engine is Belt Driven rather than Chain, as step back in many cases. The change on this can be rather pricey when it comes to a service at 125k coming in at around £650. However you can get the parts cheap enough, and if you can DIY a service (or know a Mechanic who will let you supply parts) you can get a Major Service Kit with top-quality components for less than £150.
The other downside is that the rear tyres tend to get eaten on the inner edge of the tyres. I have been going through a full set of tyres every 20k miles or so, which is expensive if you are using decent tyres. I'm looking at 4-wheel alignment next to see if there are any issues now that I have a new set of 4 tyres on the car.
All in all it is a great car. I did fall out of love with the Mondeo after the Mk3, but this car has not only rekindled my love for the Mondeo but reminded me just how much I love to drive too.
