Ford Mondeo (2007 - 2015)
Titanium 2.2 TDCi Automatic
Simply brilliant
I bought the car from Evans Halshaw Ford dealer in Chester (2011 plate/47K miles). There were some early niggles with the engine management light coming on intermittently - the dealer fitted a new EGR valve under warranty and the problem went away after several hundred miles of hard motorway driving. The auto box is smooth when the engine has warmed up but is slow to engage from a standing start. It is occasionally jerky between the gears when changing down automatically, but no problems appear when driven in tiptronic/manual mode.
The seating position is extremely comfortable with plenty of cabin room for driver and four adult passengers. Coupled with a huge boot, the hatchback is an excellent load carrier.
The 197 bhp 2.2 engine has plenty of power making overtaking easy on both motorways and A roads.
A note on economy - driven hard the car returns low to mid 30s to the gallon but use of the cruise control and keeping to a steady 60 to 65 mph on motorways, the car returns over 45 mpg when measured at the pumps. Ignore the trip computer - it under scores the true mpg by about 6%, the opposite of my last car (a Passat 2.0 TDi 110) which over recorded by a similar amount.
Would I recommend one? Yes. A superb long distance car with good economy if driven at moderate speeds with a decent asking price from a Ford main dealer with a sound warranty. Full marks to the dealer for sorting the EML problem finally. One last thought - my next one will have parking sensors to make parking a little easier.
