In view of the current proposals to put tariffs on imports was it not the US automakers who first outsourced production to Canada and Mexico to reduce costs (and also Korea and other locations)

<< The solution is to automate all activity where possible to free up the maximum number to do those jobs which cannot be delivered with technology. AI may be a key driver - as a society we need to embrace change not resist it. >>
I think all the indications are that AI will be both used and abused, taking automation still further and increasing the ranks of the unemployable. There will probably be even more leisure time to fill, which many will spend on their already overworked phones ?
If the government goes ahead with road charging for motorways - how would this handle disabled drivers ?
Should they get a free pass or a discount ? Read more
If any government brought in motorway pricing, I doubt there would be much appetite for a disabled discount in the current climate.
You may be right, dunno....
Good afternoon backroomers,
I've always been an AA or RAC man for nearly 30 years now. I usually by Via Quidco and get pretty good deals and some decent cashback. In rencent times though Ive had breakdown via My Halifax bank account, including Roadside and Homestart but not recovery, I had to pay extra direct to AA for that. I used to haggle a little and get it for around £50 ayear, its now gone up to just £100 a year even though never used. So I started looking around and Ive read many discussions on here about AutoAid, Eversure, Start, Rescue my car etc. Ive had a look at a couple, Autoaid and Rescuemycar and there about £55 all in! even knocking the £40 excess off on Autoaid I believe. Seems very cheap.... so my question is, has anybody had to use any of the above, whats the service been like? obviously AA and RAC have giant fleets and they've been good if ever needed them (years ago). Thoughts? Pitfalls if any? just hinest experiences with them. ... Read more
I was with GEM in the past and they were fabulous when I needed them (flat battery in a Punto a few years ago!) and my sister still uses them. She visited us in her previous Mondeo and complained it was noisy on the way up from Bristol to Yorkshire. I took it for a brief drive and realised clutch had more or less totally failed and applying any power at all caused the engine revs to skyrocket. Phoned GEM to explain - and half an hour later they turned up with a suitable transporter to take her and the car back to Bristol - Perfik.
If it wasn't for my driving in Europe I'd use them again....
Neighbours bought a new car last year and took it to the dealer for the first service. car was damaged by the mechanic, minor plastic trim on the side, day later another mechanic parked car and hit a raised kerb. They are understandably upset, but have a much superior car while the other one is in for bodywork.
I see their point, but the dealer has admitted fault and is paying for the Approved bodyshop repairs, but after years of driving old bangers and circumstances having changed they are upset. So would I be... Read more
So, At last after 6 weeks they have their car back and happy that the saga is over.
It was a Kia dealer .
Another interesting video from High Peak Autos: Matt's 2009 S5 (that he'd already spent a fortune on), threw a CEL. Turned out the 4.2 V8 needed new timing chains and tensioners throwing at it, at just over 80K miles.
There's some good footage of the chain set-up (there are 5 chains in total!) and how it all fits together. The video is here, and I won't spoiler the cost of the work, but suffice to say, it fits the old saying that if you buy a used premium car, set aside a budget equal to the purchase price for servicing and repairs! Understand the V6 S4 also suffers from chain problems at around 70 k which effectively write off the car unless it’s under extended warranty.
Suddenly a car worth £21 k becomes a big problem to the owner....
11 bar Nissan Leaf with excellent Mot history. Very sensible second motor for circa £2,500 I think. Very tempted myself, but current direction of thought is that I’m going to buy SWMBO’s Leaf when she upgrades this year or early next.

Yes, although a lot of the really cheap ones are pre-2014 model which have the older battery and often are seriously degraded.
The sweet spot is the 2014-2017 24Kwh which seem to be standing up well....
Hi all
I’ll soon be buying a Duster. I’ve chosen a 2022 plate Essential. The dealer sent a video when it first came in and then another after they’d cleaned it up. In the second video I noticed some paint has come off the steel wheels, which I presume happened while they were washing it.... Read more
If you do try it yourself, DON'T get any paint under where the nuts meet the wheel, or where the wheel meets the hub. It's alleged the paint gets compressed under the torque of the wheel nuts, resulting in them loosening.
Yeh. I've heard that....
Surely this must have been discussed somewhere on this forum where if you don't drive your hybrid for 6 days it DIES. What the hell is going on when Toyota had my car for two days charging the battery and seeing if there was a discharge. Toyota sent an email offering a new battery for...I have asked them for a battery booster instead of the stupid bottle of tyre puncture included . They even told me how to drive my car with a list of suggestions ..BUT not one solution to leaving it parked at an airport for two weeks and finding dead at midnight ...anyone else got solutions.
