Toyota Yaris Cross - Dead car - Barrry Small

Surely this must have been discussed somewhere on this forum where if you don't drive your hybrid for 6 days it DIES. What the hell is going on when Toyota had my car for two days charging the battery and seeing if there was a discharge. Toyota sent an email offering a new battery for...I have asked them for a battery booster instead of the stupid bottle of tyre puncture included . They even told me how to drive my car with a list of suggestions ..BUT not one solution to leaving it parked at an airport for two weeks and finding dead at midnight ...anyone else got solutions.

We took delivery of a new Yaris in March 2024. Read plenty about the battery issues before we bought it so planned ahead. Already have a Ring battery conditioner and bought a starter pack.

The car stands 7 or 8 days regularly and so far no issues, its done about 4500 miles in those 12 months.. Its stood for longer than that we we are away on holiday in our other car, again no issues on our return. I did use the battery conditioner every couple of weeks last March and April but stopped doing that when the weather improved. Not used it since.

As for the starter pack, when I had a flat battery on my Caterham it was useless, returned it for a refund. Decided that if I had an issue to use jump leads off the new Caterham battery.

Ours is a Design that does not have keyless entry etc, it seems that the Excel and GR with the keyless feature are most prone to issues.

The battery that Toyota offer as a replacement has a higher amp/hour and CCA rating and seems to solve any issues. If we had issues I would be insisting they fit one to ours car.

Simply cannot understand your comment about wanting a battery booster instead of a bottle of "tyre puncture", our car has a spacesaver spare that was standard. Regardless of that they are for different issues, a flat battery and a flat tyre are very different.

It's not just Toyota but lots of manufacturers hybrid vehicles where they use a small 12V battery to essentially switch on the computers that bring the rest of the systems on line. You only have to look at the long term reviews section of this website to see that their Skoda Kodiaq suffered from the same.

Is your Yaris Cross running the latest DCM software etc.?

How old is your car & does it have a Mutlu battery?

Yes, many cars suffer battery problems, my previous mild hybrid puma suffered with battery issues, although it never went flat it did disable some systems,( keyless would only work on the drivers door, ) my cross had a flat battery Christmas before last and had to get the AA, never had issues since, but I’ve also bought a jump starter which I carry in the car,

I didn't know about the battery problems with hybrids being spoken about here. I haven't got a hybrid and thought Toyotas were all things to all men but that's neither here nor there.

Given that there is apparently an issue my "get me out of trouble" solution would be to carry what I carry in both my Yeti and my little i10 .... a "PowerBank / Jump Starter.' It takes up virtually no room, doesn't need constant recharging, serves several functions and, best of all, it actually works and gets you out of trouble.

Some time ago I stupidly allowed my Hyundai battery to go flat in a car park and in approximately five minutes I'd started the car and was on my way courtesy of my MSC Overland Plus jump starter. It saved waiting for Autoaid to send someone (and paying them £25 as my car is over the prescribed age now)

Two of my neighbours have also borrowed the jump starter and been on their way in a couple of minutes - and there's no fear of damaging sophisticated car wiring with jump leads.

Obviously it would be better for hybrid owners if there wasn't this problem that's spoken about here, but seeing as there is, then that's my answer.

The Yaris Cross isn't an EV, it's a HEV.

But, if you consider it to be an EV, given you know many folks with the problem, why did you decide to get one?

Also, maybe in future it would worth doing a little research before choosing a car to establish whether or not it is going to suit your usage. Doing so would have flagged up the fairly well known issues regarding hybrids having a flat (12V) battery after being sat unused for some time (though it does usually seem to take longer than 6 days)
